The photo of this stairway was taken on a visit to a friend’s studio in an old building. The communal toilet–there is no private toilet–was just behind from where I was standing.

La première balade en centre-ville / So this was how walking in the West felt like.

I found several old photos from my time in France that I thought would be nice to show here. France was a lesson, it was my first experience in the West. I would not say that it was rough living here, but there was a lot to take at first. I did not mind the difference but the country was hard to crack. Maybe it was the language, or the close-knitted people, or the culture that felt very much like ‘insider’. I felt like the access to get into the life, the life in France was never in my hand. I love seeing the life I have had here, the glimpse of Lyonnais and the laid-back but passionate rhythm of experiencing the surroundings (and the arts!)–but I know that was the life that would never be mine for long.

The upcoming posts would be about this period, and then I’ll come back to post about my time in England–one that was different to France.

A construction work / Lihat boleh, duduk jangan.

The photo was taken when I was walking and taking my time doing it after I was finished with my university work. It was liberating, not because of the scenes I saw during my walk, but because I got to take my time and feel the world around me. A strange world, and there I was an outsider.

Window cleaning a building / Kejadian yang dilihat dalam perjalanan menuju Tate Modern.

Di kota besar seperti London banyak konstruksi arsitektur yang menghadang cahaya matahari. Hasilnya siluet-siluet bermunculan dan berpindah-pindah seiring pergerakan matahari, mengingatkan saya akan pertunjukan bayangan. Apa yang ada dan apa yang terlihat adalah dua hal yang berbeda. Kolong jembatan, façade gedung, kegiatan manusia. Mereka tersembunyi dan terselubung bayangan hitam. Realita terbelah menjadi dua, gelap dan terang seperti gambar di film noir.

Maximising the space / Celah.

What drew me in to take this photo was the building’s lines. I don’t really like London because of the noise, but I like looking at its architecture; the concrete examples of human’s creativity. This building’s feature in this photo looks rigid as the vertical lines slice the space. Yet the building also looks fluid in the sense that its lines create an impression of moving through the space. A demonstration of this fluidity is the motorcycle tucked in that gap. I love how the coincidental placement of that motorcycle (a feat I imagine, due to the limited space in the city), emphasises the volume difference between the area behind it (more space), and the extended exterior in front (less space). I think of the difference as a creative interaction with the given space, hence the fluidity.

My love letter to the Ziggurat / Surat cinta untuk Ziggurat.

I have a fond memory of this building, this is where I was staying during my first year as a student in University of East Anglia (UEA). I still saw this on-campus residence after I had moved out––when I was walking around the university Broad and when I was studying on the floor 3 in the library. The distinctive look is hard to be ignored, but it is the experience of being welcome and sheltered when I was still that euphoric clueless student that make the building so personal to me.

Pekanbaru was clouded in a grey-white haze, a result of the illegal burning practise by plantations to clear their lands.

This was my parting shot from Pekanbaru and Indonesia, and I left earlier than I had planned. The airport was a chaos, planes could not take off or land in. Flying schedules were so unpredictable as it heavily depended on the weather. I did not dare to stick to my initial departure date and risk messing up my flight to the UK in case if this one flight was cancelled. So I waited for the skies to clear up a bit, went to the airport, and got on whatever plane that could leave on that day.
