Barry Lee is an artist in Atlanta, GA. I asked if I could meet with him after a friend showed me some of his work on Instagram.
Here is Barry Lee Times Three (accidental double exposure).
I took these photos of Barry at Octane Grant Park in Atlanta while we had coffee and made lists of our favorite records and movies. My instant camera was wonky that day, so the pictures were all weird multiple exposures or one image printed on two separate photographs. I think they look cool.
The more I looked at Barry’s paintings (before we met) the more I liked them. They are bright and colorful, sort of playful. Everything he makes is super accessible and approachable, but there is also a depth and darkness to them. And a sense of humor. Each piece is like a smart, beautiful thing disguised in a sweet unassuming package. I love his portraits, too.
Barry (24) was raised in Nags Head, North Carolina. He moved to Atlanta after high school and graduated from SCAD. He was influenced by Jim Henson and other cartoons from his childhood, and grew up drawing images from his favorite shows while he watched. Now he finds inspiration from music and movies, and from people he meets and sees. Barry was also a DJ on college radio for four years. We talked about music a lot when we met. We also made lists.
Here are mine and Barry’s Top Ten Records:

Barry’s illustrations have been published in Creative Loafing and British Magazine, he has designed a billboard for Mail Chimp, and illustrated skateboards for a skate shop in NC. He has also been commissioned for lots of cool murals and projects. Check out his pop culture portrait project for The Bookhouse in Atlanta (I love).
You can see some of Barry Lee’s art now until the end of december at Octane Westside in a collaborative exhibition called "I Promised I Wouldn't Do This" A Show with Barry Lee & Friends.
