She had been watching his hands on her belly, but her gaze quickly meets his with his last sentence. For a moment she simply stares at him, her eyes wide as she processes what he’s said. It was one thing to commit to a relationship with someone with a child, but it was an entirely different story to offer responsibility for their child as well.
“Jack… are you sure?” she asks, her hand moving to cup his cheek. Her thumb caresses his cheek as she watches him, wondering how on earth she had gotten so lucky to have him in her life.
“I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.” He knows why she’s surprised - hell, he’s a little surprised that he’s actually said it - but it’s something he’s thought about for a long time now; he would’ve offered it even if his feelings had been one-sided. Janet is so, so important to him and has been for so long that he can’t imagine being a part of this next stage of her life and as he stares at her, one hand on her belly and the other still on her cheek, he wants nothing more than to be a family with this incredible woman and her child.
“You don’t have to say anything right now,” he says, unsure of her reaction. “I get it if you need time to think but I wanted you to know that the offer’s there.” He smiles at her and leans in for another kiss, finding it impossible to keep himself from kissing her as much as he can now that he knows she returns his feelings. “I love you.”
