Roast the M2 Browning

The immortal. When people talk about ancient guns, they talk about easy shit. Handcannone? Tanegashima? You fools. You utter worthless fools. Do you see this? This backdrop of every modern conflict, adorned to every vehicle, plane and helicopter? From the lowly Toyota to the hitech CROWS gun mounts? This fucking thing? This is an ancient gun. This is archaic. This is big. This is the equivalent of bringing great-grandpa to a gunfight. And great-grandpa got his start stabbing Germans in Belleau Wood. And he’s DAMN good at doing it now.

HMG’s as a concept start with one gun, the 1918 TnF Maxim gun. The German’s solution to the rise of tanks and general air superiority, the 13.2 TuF cartridge was intended to do just that. Shoot tanks. Shoot planes. While the 13.2 TuF round would be used by the T-Gewehr rifle, the Maxim wouldn’t materialize before the Armistice. But you get this wacky Mormon man, give him access to a bunch of acquired ex-German equipment because of the Versailles Treaty. And give him time, you get this. Introduced in 1921, and the hottest seller of .50 BMG death ever since. Many have tried to come and replace it, and few have. The closest things these have gotten to modification was slapping an ACOG or dot on it.

And that’s because it works. Offensively well. The M2 plays into a basic role in a way that makes no sense until you think about it. What does an HMG do? It makes people duck down. Pintle mounted, tripod mounted, rigged on a stick, it’s intention is to make people duck the fuck down or become a brand new shade of house paint. And the M2′s basic pros of a slow ROF, overbuilt internals and quick change barrel means that it does that basic work very well. Sure, not everything in life is supposed to stay the same until the end of time, but when you want dakka, and dakka that hits like a brick shithouse and fucks over anyone regardless of cover or armor, this is good dakka. It’s killed people for a century, and it’s probably going to keep doing so for ages.
