Fine Art - Primary Research; Tate Modern
Rauschenberg, Shades 1964
Above is a sneaky image I took of Rauschenberg’s Shades 1964. I am including this in my online blog as his muse and practice, represented here is massively influential when deciding how to compose my final piece.
I am undecided wether to have my acrylic sheeted final outcome, backlit. I like the strong finish which each layer being illuminated transparency, however i quite like how natural light makes its way through the work - as noticed with my prototypes documented in my sketchbook.
RESEARCH LEADING TO EXTENDED RESEARCH
Tillmans’ work in the Tate is also very relevant to my Fine Art research and development. I love the naked and decomposing depiction of a exposed lobster. He is demonstrating and allowing the viewer to consume somewhat uncomfortable images.
I intend to use images such as this for my final piece, and stick them on acetate, creating a series of slides, like those of Rauschenberg.
CONTEXTUAL REFLECTION
Rauschenberg’s use of the readymade at the start of his artistic life fed into and appeared in his later work. He considered and preached the readymade is the art, and did not need to be converted into something that it wasn’t, following economic influences in America at that time. Relevance to me? I wish to create something that reflects my childhood memories, touched on at the very start of Fine Art - Communication.
London, March 2017 Parreno, Turbine Hall Here are my photographs of the work of Parreno, aforementioned in this blog. The most outstanding thing about this piece is the sheer scale of it. The concept is very clever and strong - it works. I will progress with the idea of life, growth and mould for my final installation piece. See above for a live video.
Philippe Parreno is a French artist who works across film, video, sound, sculpture, performance and information technology, and the second artist to get the Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern 14 October 2016 – 2 April 2017
Installation Art - Research and Idea Development
Here is an installation that I will be viewing in the next couple of days when I go to London.
It is relevant to my study as it incorporates the idea and concept of “chance and control: the sequences of events are triggered by software which is informed by micro-organisms. These react to and activate elements of the commission through a bioreactor visible at the far end of the Turbine Hall.”
For my final outcome, I utilise the biological eventuality of the growth of mould on food sorts.
I love how clever Parreno’s work is. Unfortunately i do not have to equipment nor space to create something similar to this, however after research, I am now focused and determined to pursue with my idea following mind mapping.
Refer to first page of second sketchbook to visualise my idea development and visuals.

Performance Art - The Arts, Local Pantomime.
I was struggling to think of something I could perform for this unit and topic. Unaware of something right under my nose.
Here is a video I got a fellow actor to record from the wings whilst performing in my local pantomime - Alice in Wonderland.
I decided to include this is my blog as I believe it is a perfect example of performance - obviously...
Although I may struggle to expand and develop this idea in this unit, it is good to include in my blog and sketchbook as it demonstrates my ability in areas other than just ‘conventional ‘ arts.
This scene was awarded Best Scene and Dance at the awards night.
A better video will be uploaded at a later date when the edit is finished.
3D - Braille player communication prototype
Here is a prototype of my braille vinyl player. I experimented by using card, and ply wood. I used equipment such as knife, glue gun, scissors and laser cutter to create the experimental vinyl.
Direction and changes - I would like my actual outcome to be about 3 times the size of this. Furthermore I would to create my box out of ply wood (9mil probably.) Additionally I would prefer to use a mechanical drill as the method of spinning the canvas on top. I think that either door stoppers or rivets will be best when replicating braille.
I will now begin to research what i would like the braille to communicate (i am going to have a few vinyls, made in laser cutter, to ‘say’ different things) - song? speech? lyrics? dialogue? quote?

Photography - Multiple person portraiture: Lensmen trilogy
(MORE TO FOLLOW...)
Here is just one photo of a series of multi person portraits I took recently. I developed my portraiture further by adding two more people to the image. I love this outcome; so much more to look at and consider. All conveying different body language and facial expression.
Development - I would like to paint over the top of these, after researching and analysing work done by Richard Hamilton.
Maybe possibly taking pictures at night with external lights and flash...
This research could be useful for my Fine Art, as skulls and decomposition are features that I have centred upon during this communication unit.
Portraiture - bracing the elements
This morning I have been experimenting with editing photography on Adobe Lightroom.
I intended to transform my somewhat mediocre photography up to a Taylor Wessing standard. I dabbled in altering the saturation, aperture, light invert layer masking, shadows and vignetting.
Here are some of my outcomes.
I would like to progress further by possibly adding paint to them, similar to the work done by Richard Hamilton. Furthermore I would like to try multiple person portraiture.
Fine Art development - Skulls
Here is a depth piece I created this morning into afternoon. I created 5 hand drawn works, using materials such as graphite, biro, ink and acrylic paints. Each work is an individual expression.
I decided on the depth composition as just creating a series of works side by side is somewhat old hack.
Reflection - I really like the outcome, it combined hand drawn paintings and drawings alongside craftsmanship as I had to build the cardboard platform from which the works could hang.
Direction - Although I love the outcome, I don’t think I would like to do something like this for my final piece. I would however like to pursue with the idea of skulls, moreover touching on elements such as decomposition and gore. My Jake and Dinos Chapman research along with Caravaggio would aid this discovery.
Influence - I took inspiration from my mind-mapping and work done by McQueen, somewhat stylising and glamourising skulls, an object with somewhat dark connotations.
Some lighting techniques that gave me inspiration and direction before doing my gel shoot.
Photography - Gel filter (2)
Here is the second set of photographs, experimenting with gel filtering and lighting. Here you notice a stark difference following the first set of images. We altered the white balance to the white fluorescent light mode in order to allow less amount of light to expose the model, therefore the background is non-existent and the figure is characterised by shadowing and highlights. Somewhat like Fitzpatrick, Che Guevara paintings.
I love how the light is very had, and directional lighting has been altered to suit.

Integrating lighting techniques with portraiture
Here is the first of two collections of images photographed by myself of Jamie Scarffe, part-time model, full time good guy.
As a collaboration we experimented with a range of photographic techniques, by using gel filters over independent spot lights, then altering the aperture and ISO to suit. We had to adapt by moving the lights and changing the intensity in order to create the greatest possible outcome.
We struggled trying to get the white balance correct, however on the next set of photographs you will notice a monumental change after altering the balance to a different setting - white fluorescent light. These were taken in the shade format, so they were given more light, with colourful backgrounds matching the model.
Direction - Next time, we would like to use 3 colours, as red, green and blue in fact make white light and create interesting shadows.
Progression - I would like to take this method outdoors, and explore location. Possibly even changing the fashion to suit.
