This reminds me most obviously of black swan and scratches an itch somewhere in between gilmore girls and damages. The characters and setting are well done. The drama got to the point of stressing me out a time or two. The male love interest is completely uninteresting. I know it's traditional for the middle book in a trilogy to be slightly lesser, but this one drew me in much more. Rather than focusing on the university plot, which is where the last book led me to believe it was going, it following the natural personal and emotional consequences of the first story. I thought the representations of both a similar brain state to mine and family issues were well done. I was also annoyed by the cliffhanger. Intense imagery to the point of being horror is the backbone of this story. I could tell the references went deeper than I was equipped to understand. It had a legendary feel in a context I hadn't tried before. The art direction is gorgeous and upsetting. It's masculine, fairly inacessible, and full of dense imagery. Plot takes backseat to language, theme, and character. There are almost no women. I loved it? I don't know how to explain it l. I just imprinted intensely on several parts of this magnificent incomprehensible mash up. Like how the two leads had such different concepts of masculinity. Or how affection filtered through such different lenses. Or how the prose couldn't care less that it's mixing modern slang with SAT words.
