CAN I BE HONEST? I didn't care that much about her at the beginning. IT'S NOT THAT I DIDN'T LIKE HER, I just didn't mind her. If that makes sense ?? I sympathized with her, but I didn't find her as interesting as the other female characters (Alana and Heidi, i dont care that much about Cyn).

Although after seeing her (several times) in Argentina, I felt I could relate to her a lot more for some reason (maybe the two pixels from the slime tutorial didn't help). She's not my favorite character, but she's definitely an interesting one.

When did you first discover DEH? Why do you still enjoy it? And, who and why is your otp?? ♥️

1. Well,. Okay, so the story goes like this: my first encounter with the musical was through the song "Sincerely Me" because of the "But not because we're gay" meme animation (2/4/2023). I thought it was a really good song, so I became obsessed with it for a while until the algorithm started recommending the other songs from the show. At that point, I knew about the show but nothing about the story, I didn't know where to watch it, I didn't even know there was a MOVIE??, all this during the pandemic, I think; until, MIRACULOUSLY, one day I stumbled across the slime tutorial WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING WHAT THE HECK A SLIME TUTORIAL WAS (i wasnt a musical type of person, so this was all new for me). I clicked on the video by accident or out of curiosity and realized it was the whole show. I saved it to watch at my grandma's house, and the rest is history...

2. This one's a bit difficult to answer, because I know the musical isn't anything special, the main character isn't very liked, and it has a really bad reputation because of the movie. But I think it's partly because it was the first musical that opened the door to musicals for me (Disney aside), and partly because it touches on a theme that really resonated with me during that period of isolation (feeling alone, like nobody notices you, like nobody cares). It made me reflect a lot on myself and my relationships. It's also a fun show (at least during act 1), with great songs. I can't really explain it, but I connected with the musical very strongly, for some reason, and it became my comfort show.

3. OKEY SO, IT'S OBVIOUSLY TREEBROS, BUT WHY?? i don't know if i cant put my thoughts out loud for this one. I think the first thing that brought me closer to the ship was "Sincerely Me" (thinking Evan and Connor were actually a couple) (a canon event in the fandom), and Pinterest recommending old drawings of those two. I was gaslighted and went to watch the slime tutorial without realizing one of them was dead lol okay.

I think what I love most about this ship is that the story always leaves you wondering, "What if...?" The book does this even more, since it tells the story from both Evan's and Connor's perspectives. Although they seem very different, it's always implied that they're two sides of the same coin; they weren't as different as they thought. They had similar interests, similar problems, and they were both alone. And it makes you think, "What would have happened if they had been alone together?" Even they both express in the book that it wouldn't have been crazy for them to have become friends. Friendship could have happened, and then we think, something more could have happened. It's all about the possibilities, the dynamics. They could have helped each other, they could have hurt each other, anything could have happened. The good thing about this ship is that I'm on solid ground; I'm not without evidence like in a rareship or crackship, and it's not a canon ship where everything is already written. I have proof that shows the (platonic) relationship could have happened, and it also leaves open the possibility that a romantic relationship could have happened if they had put their minds to it.

Does that makes sense? Idk, but i still love them anyway. Im sorry if smt doesnt make sense, english is not my first language and i dont know how to put my thoughts out loud, especially with this musical

Dear Evan Hansen is my favourite musical of all time and its story regularly makes me sob and I'm so sick and tired of having to hesitate when I admit that. DEAR EVAN HANSEN IS A FANTASTIC MUSICAL WITH A STORY ABOUT THE VARIOUS LIMITS POOR MENTAL HEALTH CAN PUSH SOMEONE TO AND HOW THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO LEARN AND GROW FROM THE MISTAKES THAT MENTAL STATE CAUSES THEM TO MAKE. NO ONE IN DEH IS A WHOLLY GOOD PERSON AND THATS THE FUCKING POINT. As someone who has struggled with severe anxiety that led to depressive episodes and suicidal ideation, teenage me saw myself in Evan in all the worst ways. I saw my people pleasing tendencies that bordered on pathological lying because I was SO scared of people being mad at me. I saw the intense desire for companionship but the isolation of feeling like you're staring at the world through one-way glass. The pushing away of family members that were doing their best to help me because I didn't want to think about how broken I was anymore. I saw a version of myself on that stage that was so raw and so real, and the idea that someone like Evan could continue going after what he had done, that he could push through all the weeds in his mind and come out on the other side, it gave me hope that maybe I could to. It kept me going at one of the darkest and loneliest points of my life. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, I would never try and tell anyone that they aren't allowed to think something I like is bad or that they aren't allowed to express that in public. It just... hurts when it seems like most of the DEH content on not just this website but others, is bashing the story or more specifically bashing Evan. Crying out about how horrible and irredeemable of a person he is, how the story didn't do nearly enough to punish him. I just needed to get this shit off my chest so bad. This has been gnawing at me for what feels like years.

Sorry everyone, let me vent for a moment.

I just saw online—well, more specifically, here—that some people dislike Dear Evan Hansen because they believe its core message is that “the real you doesn’t deserve to be loved, and people will only make up false stories about you after you die so they can like you.”

And honestly… did you only watch Act One and then leave? Or skip to random scenes? Did you miss the ending entirely? Or even read the novel?

Every musical has its haters—that’s normal. But I really hope that if people are going to dislike something, the reasons are at least reasonable. For example, not liking the music style, or finding the story too heavy or depressing. Those are subjective opinions, and they’re valid.

What I don’t understand is how Dear Evan Hansen supposedly sends the message that “the real you doesn’t deserve to be loved.” If anything, isn’t the entire point of the show the exact opposite—that the real you does deserve to be loved, even when you’re flawed, awkward, or make terrible mistakes?

I’ve even seen people say they hate a musical because they had bad seats. And honestly, I just wish some people would pay a little more attention when watching theatre, instead of forming shallow conclusions and spreading them around as “analysis.”
