I want more neutral readers real badly.. give me explicit they/them readers. Give me characters that are neutral because that’s their identity, not cause it’s for everyone. Give me subtle corrections like ‘your son/daughter’ ‘my child’ or ‘he’s/she’s very sweet’ ‘they are, you’re right’
Idk man.. I’d love to be able to read stuff actually targeted to me as a person..
God I forgot to respond to this but 100% to all of this yeah.
There’s so much fun to be had with neo/xeno pronouns and no one uses it.. also hard HARD agree with the ‘multiple pov’ stories. It isn’t that hard to copy-paste and change up pronouns or genitals if writing smut as I’ve read one before that had two different versions depending on genitals. Can I be a bit of a bother? Sure, but people will notice. And I know for sure if I saw someone write a nonbinary!reader (or similar) with my fav characters I’d be kicking and giggling in excitement but nope. Just have to misgender myself every time I read an x reader instead.
Some other things I didn’t mention on my main post that I should also include:
-Make neutral readers outside of just platonic scenarios!! We deserve to romantically interact with characters too.
-Making a reader ‘neutral’ (as in open to interpretation) isn’t the same as having a reader’s gender be neutral [Mentioned this somewhat in the main post but didn’t really explain it much]
-If you’re making a neutral reader, stop writing them as if the reader is female/male and then you’re just changing it up. We can tell when you’re writing a ‘neutral’ character and picturing them as female/male instead
-Make trans readers! Fuck with pronouns and presentation! Have the characters be in T4T relationships, have the characters be really fucking supportive of their neutral partners, have the characters be in polyam with a neutral reader, have them be in a found family dynamic that doesn’t make them have gendered roles (like mom/brother/aunt/whatever).
-Don’t just give neutral characters situations centered around them being neutral (should be obvious but the same happens with all the trans readers I’ve seen where it’s all about reader hating being trans and then the character helps them down from it)
Eh, whatever. I’m complaining a lot as someone who doesn’t write x readers, but it does get really hard seeing there’s hundreds of writers (plenty being queer themselves) who never write neutral characters and I’m honestly getting a bit tired of it.
