Stop. Sherlock lifts his eyes to read John’s face, and true to word, he finds not a single crease or wrinkle of amusement. Perhaps he went a bit too far. Did he? Probably. Sherlock straightens, and clears his throat – a tell approaching an apology. 

     “I didn’t mean to be insensitive.” 

He was doing so well ( at least he thought so ), but his next words fell faster than even his verbal filter could salvage. 

     “But it was a little funny.”
