@hisjiminycricket | Rosamund’s letter to John (re; college verse)
I know I am the last person you wish to hear from, the last person you want to think of, but when I heard you were to be deployed to Afghanistan, I didn’t want to part on the lasting memory you had of me - especially if that is to be the last time I will ever see you.
First of all, I want you to know that everything I felt for you was real. It wasn’t a lie. I still remember the first time I saw you come into our lecture. You were wearing these, tan coloured chinos, and a grey jumper, a simple scarf wrapped around your neck to keep you warm amongst the cold and harsh English weather. I sat at the back of the class, you were a couple of rows down from me. You had such a focus, you took everything in, learning whatever you could. I was, struck, I suppose you could say. It didn’t take much for me to know you were going to be a phenomenal doctor. I know you wouldn’t of noticed me, but I always took notice of you when you came into class. You fascinated me.
Then there was that incredible night we shared. I didn’t expect, that to happen. But I had no regrets. I usually had never been that sort of girl, or at least I thought better of myself then to not see myself as that ‘one night stand’ girl. Anyway, tangent - you were just, such a gentleman. Now before that, I always thought you were cute, but that made me see you in this whole other way. In the best way a girl could ever see a guy. Who knew cheap pub alcohol and study could do that? Usually if anything, it’s the other way around.
I fell for you, completely and utterly, head over heels. Yes, at the time, I was with Mycroft. If you must know, we’ve now split. I still work with him, but we are no longer together. But during that period of time, Mycroft barely looked at me the way he used to. I felt as if he didn’t love me anymore, if he even did. You wandered into my life at the time I felt like no one would look at me the way he used to. But you did, in ways he never could. You made me smile when I couldn’t, you made me laugh when I wanted to cry, You made me so happy and fulfilled in a time where I felt so empty and without a purpose. The way you held me in your arms, the way you smiled the first time you told me you loved me... I had forgotten what it felt like to be loved the way you loved me. You gave me faith that not all guys were devoid of showing any heart.
I can’t tell you how much I regret not telling you about Mycroft. Every excuse I made, everything I hid... I can’t explain how much I hated myself for doing that to you. I was so scared that if I lost you, I’d end up loosing myself. I was finally starting to remember what loving myself felt like when I was with you, and to go back to how I used to see myself, how I see myself now... It’s not a place anyone would want to be. And now, here I am without anyone. Loneliness is becoming all too familiar of a friend once more because I let my heart get caught between a rock and a hard place.
You’re a good man, John Watson. A brave man. A loyal man. One of the greatest men I have ever met. I don’t think I’ll ever come close to loving another like I did you. Please know, I truly never meant to hurt you. I know what I did was stupid, and pathetic. Mycroft was the first man I fell for, but you were the first man I could see myself in forever with. And that will never change. I left my heart in pieces with you that night, and I doubt I will ever be the same, but alas, I can only hope.
I love you, always. I hope one day you can find it within your heart to love me again too.
