           she’d been up before the sun, sure to be silent as the dawn as luke slept restfully beside her. grabbing one of her many sketchbooks off the make-shift apple crate-table and a pencil from the recycled can of art tools on the floor beside it, she began to draw by the light of the rising sun. her eyes adjusted quickly to the dark, and before she knew it, luke was stirring beside her, sitting up and peering over her shoulder.

she sighed at the thought of being stranded here, at the mercy of whoever stumbled on them. as much as beth wanted to pull the proverbial covers over her head and pretend this wasn’t happening… she was quick to switch gears, focusing on the task at hand. ❝ okay… okay. it’s only eight. maybe by noon, the sun will be high enough that the ice will melt and we can get out. in the meantime… we try the windows. ❞ her stomach protested: she was starving, and there was nothing subtle about it.
