As much as I can get on board with "It was never casual" I am also like. Miffed by people who point to various moments in the show like "And they thought THIS was casual?!" because like sorry but sometimes casual sex is like that. Like more and more I get the impression from this fandom that they think there are two types of sex, monogamous marital soulmate sex that is allowed to be happy and affectionate and loving vs. evil bad empty hollow sex that is mechanical and utilitarian and makes people miserable and this is the sex that's "casual." Sorry but. No. Casual sex can be fun and silly and affectionate and loving and intimate and all of the things too. The only difference is the underlying feeling. That's what would have tipped Shane and Ilya off. Not like. The fact that they smiled while kissing or whatever ok.

Sometimes I think about the fact that almost every single person who found out about Shane and Ilya felt the need to ask Shane "him? really? he's the one you want to be with?"

I think about how Ilya has had to make his way through life mostly on his own since he was twelve years old, about how he moved to a new country as a teenager and was immediately thrust in front of a camera without knowing the language or how to cope with his newfound fame. I think about the preconceived notions of Russians and how, in the absence of being able to accurately communicate (both because of the language barrier and his repressive upbringing), Ilya decided to or was forced to lean into that stereotype. I think about how soft Ilya allows himself to be with Shane, about how he takes care of him, about how silly and goofy he can be, how he's sometimes just a grown kid, how other times he's the only person who can shut Shane's brain off. I think about how kind he is, how caring, how deeply he feels, how incredibly empathetic he is. I think about how wildly Shane loves him. How there literally never could have been anyone else. I think about how incredibly hurtful it is that no one trusts Shane to make his own decisions about his own fucking life and how much it hurts seeing the coldness the world regards his partner with. I think about Shane getting home and walking straight into Ilya's arms, after having to (once again) justify his love for the best man he's ever known, allowing himself to take comfort in his warm embrace, even when it feels to Shane like he should be the one providing both comfort and shelter.

I think about the surety Shane would feel when thinking to himself, "yes. Him. No one else."

It’s crazy how the hunger games got turned into a love triangle story by the media when in the books katniss is like:

I am forever, at least partly, thinking about how the language barrier has shaped public perception of Ilya. Yes, some of his asshole persona is owed to his natural showboating and joy of ragebaiting but I firmly believe a large part of it is due to most of his public communication taking place in a language that isn't his own and one he doesn't have a firm grasp on in those early years.

A reporter asks him a question that he doesn't fully understand and it's easier to blow it off with an off-hand comment than to admit that he's struggling. He says something that was meant jokingly but some of the terms he uses are harsher than he intends and his inflection doesn't necessarily signal the playful nature in a way it would have, were he a native speaker. He'd rather keep his answers brief than say the wrong thing or visibly scramble for words and by the time he gains fluency, public perception of him has already been cemented.

I saw a post about Shane and Ilya being sad that they can't thank each other in their acceptance speeches like other can with their spouses and it got me thinking:

Ilya wins his first awards and hes got nobody he really wants to thank after his team and coach cause he he hates his family but he knows his speech is too short so on impulse he goes "And I want to thank Shane Hollander for being slightly worse than me this season". Everyone knows it was going to one of those two, so everyone thinks hes an asshole to say that but whats new so it works for him. But from then on it then becomes a bit for both of them to thank each other in their speeches in a snide way as a reason they won.

Shane winning the Art Ross Trophy (Awarded to the player who leads the league in total points at the end of the regular season). and going "special thanks to Rozanov for missing at least 5 shots this season, he was a huge help"

Ilya winning the Conn Smythe Trophy (Awarded to the most valuable player for his team in the playoffs.) "Just want to give a quick shout out to Hollander for getting knocked out in the second round this season. Must hate to see me up here."

They find a way to mention the other in their speeches every time all the time.
