Okay so this post has crossed my dash a few times so I tried to look up the source. Anyway from what I found, it's very likely this image is AI generated, but in my attempt to find where it was posted first I went down kind of a weird rabbit hole of iterations.

The earliest appearance of the image that I managed to find by searching keywords in Google was this twitter post from May 21, 2026. I don't know if it's the origin, but the twitter account is just reposts of "heartwarming" stories so it wouldn't be surprising:

Additionally, lots of people reposting this image claim that it depicts a German Shepherd named Ryker. Ryker is an actual dog that flunked out of service dog training, and is completely unrelated to this image (and also isn't a German Shepherd). This is the video some of the posts linked to as the source. It's from 2018 and shows a completely different dog from the pic:

Also the training academy that posted the video later made reference to the video being stolen, going viral, and Ryker being falsely identified as a German Shepherd. This was back in 2020. I didn't bother trying to find who stole the video. My guess is that the video went viral, and then someone invented a story based on it, made the image, and that went viral too. (#jesus)

I also tried using Google Lens to do a reverse image search. Maybe not the best image searcher but eh. I was excited when I found this video from June 1, 2026, but screenshots from it didn't yield anything from Lens so I assume it's an AI generated video created from the AI generated image:
