(i thought calling myself mclune and having a sun-themed url was a really good bit) 22 year old eccentric (they/any i truly do not care), i draw stupid idiot shitposts and talk about tv for the love of the game also known as kennedymclune (link in pinned, account for (slightly higher effort) original art/writing)
good art = my tag for reblogs of other people's art
hcs.txt = my textpost tag
posts about pieces of media are always tagged with the name of that media (for example deltarune)
i'm also @kennedymclune (original art/writing posted there, but will still reblog some of it here)
mclune cheat sheet under the cut (the gist of my interests and some disclaimers)
---
so basically i love the following:
clever absurdist comedies (community, 30 rock, undertale/deltarune, space dandy, hello from halo head (webcomic), 100 gfs that really love you (in spite of the lethal amounts of, Anime Bullshit), mlp friendship is witchcraft)
colourful shows with great art direction + character dynamics (land of the lustrous (didn't finish the manga), panty and stocking (writing's kinda bad but it's fun))
cinematic barely-fantasy "cerebral" shows with intrigue/mysteries (apothecary diaries, severance)
exactly 3 game franchises (hollow knight/silksong, undertale/deltarune (again), (great) ace attorney (honourable mention for bug fables since leif is such a great character))
making my own works that hopefully do the above inspirations justice (more on the sideblog... heheh... 👉👈)
music (just a little bit) (imagine a triangle where 1 point is "vaguely theatrical narrative music", 1 point is "weird dissonant jazz (with pianos)" and 1 point is "British", and you could probably place all my favourite music somewhere in the diagram (examples include machinery of the human heart, yoeko kurahashi/bryan scary, and gorillaz/the hoosiers respectively))
human biology/biochemistry (mechanisms of action of drugs/supplements, endocrinology, sleep/dreams, rccx theory, etc)
also i do have reasoned opinions on issues like misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, the financial discrimination that comes from those, etc., including how they pertain to the above pieces of media. i won't tend to post about them all that much directly, but trust me I Definitely Know. you just have to take me in good faith on this one. i'm also in scotland and my friends are mostly a bunch of very international people online, so i probably won't be perfectly up to date on specifically USA happenings 100% of the time
i have a "theory" (very vibes/theme-based i guess) that one of the "reasons" suselle exists is that they'll have some type of huge emotional battle at the end of the game, and the fact they really love each other just serves to make it sting that much more. no sources on hand, but there's several points where susie says she wants good things to go on indefinitely, and more points where noelle feels intense suffocation and disdain at the idea of everything staying the same because things stop feeling real.
it seems like an extremely huge ideological disagreement to just go unaddressed for the whole relationship, as well as a very strong idea from a story standpoint (2 major characters representing opposite ways of dealing with the core theme, dramatically fighting each other as a representation of the personal emotional conflict they have)... also there was that one undertale concept art where a huge lizard creature fights a deer creature (hope people know what i'm talking about). actually all the noelle angel hints as well come to think of it
anyway if i look at things from this angle, the (imo slightly bland) "cozy/wholesome" way the relationship has been written up until now starts to make a lot more sense. you 100% need those joyful highs to potentiate the anguished lows, too much of one or the other and it doesn't work. i'm gonna let toby cook and will just hope he does something as compelling as this (or more) by the end of the game
Listen, I completely understand why it was an issue for some people, but I still think that naming the original release of Deltarune “SURVEY_PROGRAM.exe” was really really funny
also when you opened it you had to agree to the end user license agreement, which just said "YOU WILL ACCEPT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS FROM NOW ON." and when people on twitter told him their antivirus was flagging it as a threat, he posted a "fix" that was just a screenshot of the windows defender popup with the "run anyway" button circled
#it's like taking candy from an unmarked white van#and the candy is wrapped in tinfoil and printer paper and the ingredients list just says ''dude trust me''#but you know that guy is a chocolatier and made the best damn truffles you ever tasted so you take the free van candy anyway#and it turns out that it is pretty good candy that this guy was just giving out for free (from yardsards)
series of drawings of mary + amber + her 2 freshly designed other friends. daphne (the tall pink one) is a programmer/(ethical) hacker who can turn any argument back on you, and leaf (his actual name yes) ((the even taller green one)) is an inscrutable and curt dish washer who knows questionable amounts of obscure philosophy.
(i forget how much i talked about amber, but she's just kinda normal compared to everyone else (actor turned animal shelter, person))
there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well
and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it
the researchers found that being online didnt make people more hostile, but that being online allowed already hostile people to dominate forum conversations, and the less aggressive people were much less likely to reply or engage, ending in just the aggressive people bickering at eachother
also ive never reeeally liked transfeminine noelle because she is clearly filling the role of like Traditional Feminine Innocent Girl and that personally doesnt resonate with my adolescent experience but also as of chapter 5 weird route i think seeing a girl have a fucking breakdown while she expresses how her entire personality (again tradfem Girl Next Door) is a facade she feels unable to escape from and its slowly killing her. im gonna say transfeminine noelle is actively missing the point.
now TO BE CLEAR i get the appeal of transfems looking at a story and thinking how nice it would be if we got to be the sweet innocent girl next door as a 12-14 year old!!! i just think the game that ends its introduction with a scary voice telling you "no one can choose who they are in this world" is the place to do it
Sometimes you have to look at a character and say “this character is NOT happy or comfortable in their body enough to have gone through an entire gender transition already”. Sometimes you have to acknowledge that whatever gender things they may have going on they’re deeply repressed
lore about this post is that i didnt intend to make those typos, i was high asf on a farm in florida at the time and didnt even notice how i typed this until a long time later when it had notes
There's really this strong temptation that everyone has which basically says "to have interiority is to be like me; ordinary people are surface everywhere." And this manifests in different ways in different spaces, and becomes really pronounced when you cluster together with similar people. So tumblr users often act like straight people don't have any interiority because it helps you feel the deepening of social bonds with other gay people. This happens professionally too. I think it was Summer or Sharks who was saying that programming people think that intelligence is just being really good at writing code. Not surprising but very strange to me! I am (equally ridiculously) used to thinking that intelligence is being really good at philosophy, having command of a lot of sources that you can use creatively, etc. This reflects a kind of dynamic on tumblr and reddit. On reddit to have interiority is to be a science guy and on tumblr to have interiority is to be a humanities girl (and the dynamic is gendered in exactly this way). And I think there is something dangerous about habitually regarding other people as automatons. It's good to have people outside of your niche to remind you that other people from different walks of life are quite deep and complicated. They are full of love and fine grained attention to things you never thought to care about. And I think a lot of people go through life thinking of themselves as perpetually victimized by basically empty people rather than having genuine confrontations with full, genuine people who are committed to subtle, complex and real values, who have detailed and intricate histories, and who have a bond to you that you might never quite fully understand. But we rarely even try at understanding these things. We just decide that they're stupid and ridiculous and unreasonable.
the year is 2035. the new beauty standard is for women to cut their ears off, as ears are a masculine trait which make the face look too big and hearing isnt necessary as it doesnt align with being demure. evil feminists say perhaps this is unnecessary and ears are natural. women are agressively proclaiming they are cutting their ears off due to sensory issues
yes, I know the difference between genAI totally generating fake things out of thin air and specific machine learning projects based on a focused dataset. yes, the journalists and the moneybags are intentionally conflating the two things because the public does not totally understand.
my field (very basic ecology and morphotaxonomy, hi) inherently benefits from neither genAI NOR machine learning, and is now essentially dead, as all of the remaining money has been shunted to the former two. I know there are uses for machine learning, and that's great, but you can't use it for my thing, and now my thing is going away in favor of this stuff, whether or not it is "AI" and whether or not anyone wants it or benefits from it (my lab certainly did not lol).
forgive me if I am not mentioning the inherent value of machine learning on other things every time, I'm frustrated. this is now the ONLY science we get to have, and I'm tired of people musing that machine learning will do my thing too someday. no, it won't.
"Not dating or having sex isn't even a source of discrimination in real life-" How many rights and benefits are tied up in marriage contracts though? How much of our economic and societal structure is built with the clear expectation that people couple up and support each other? Where's the security nets and affordable options for people who will never have a partner/spouse to take care of them? How many people save serious commitment only for people they have a romantic and sexual relationship with? How many people will unquestionably prioritize their sexual and romantic relationship above all other social connections in their lives? And where does that leave the people who don't want that at all, ever?
“i have to listen to my body’s needs” secret boss fight written by person who has chronic and disabling wrist pain which has fundamentally changed his relationship to his hobbies and his job <- i care it as someone who has also had chronic pain in my wrist/hand for 5 years
another thing i tend to think about with this. i also just think in chapter 5 there's a theme of care and dependency. the flowers have extreme guilt over being taken care of by asgore. flowery conceptualizes himself as weak and useless. in the dark world, his fantasy, he tries to return the care given to him to asgore to "make up for" asgore taking care of him when he should've died decades ago. it's an extreme example, but i also resonate with his feeling.
when your body or mind puts you in a situation where your reliance on other people becomes really explicit, you're trained by the world to see that as shameful or to see yourself as deficient. your efforts to ignore your needs just to avoid "being a burden," will leave you worse off. you punish yourself because of deeply internalized ableism.
regardless, even by virtue of being a living thing on this planet, you are already designed to need others. you have to listen to your body's needs even against a society that teaches you you shouldn't. you have to be okay with the fact that you have needs. sometimes your needs are different or are greater than the person next to you, and all you can do is listen to your body and turn to others when you need them. you're still a person when you need people.
when toby says this:
it's interesting to me how much he uses the language of deltarune to express this feeling. your hopes and dreams slipping away, and bitterness growing is literally the explanation we get for shadow crystals (and so wept the fallen star, making rivers with its tears. then, slowly, from the bitter water, something grew. it looked like glass). this is also the crushing feeling when you lose a sense of control when you're in pain, when you can't do things the way you want, the way you used to. but when you find yourself still able to fly, you do so because you've adapted. you've listened to your body. you've learned that listening to your body means changing the pace, letting yourself be cared for, letting yourself be helped.
as far as toby's said it, having to expand his team has made deltarune a better game. chapter 5 is so expansive because so many people helped to make it. Pink's fight has sprite work from guest artists, music with Camellia, bullets programmed by Toby's team. She is, to me, a love letter to Deltarune's development process as a whole and how it has shaped Toby, and a reflection of the kinds of thoughts Toby has shared with us about developing Deltarune alongside pain. I also think it's a beautiful follow-up to Gerson's themes of storytelling and authorship (letting go of "perfection" + accepting the contributions of others = both about rescinding control and embracing perseverance). Pink is also so much more than this, but I've been thinking about this a lot.
