“you might.” elle replied, shrugging. it was the truth after all. either you ended up with someone or you died alone, that was life. she didn’t mean it in a condescending kind of way though. the blonde wasn’t sure what she’d been expecting when she asked if he was okay but it wasn’t this. “you’re very poetic when you’re upset…” not able to get the picture he painted out of her head. it was all very shakespearean. when he seemed to tear up a bit, elle wasn’t sure what to do, she wasn’t used to people crying when she wasn’t the reason for it but somewhere inside of her she could understand. “i would say it gets easier but it doesn’t really. i - i felt similarly when my grandmother died. she was everything to me.” a death that had been a wake up call to the blonde back in her wilder days.

rolling his eyes at her first response, cooper couldn’t help but smile at the normalcy of the moment. pretty typical elle, some things never changed. a slight laugh leaving him next.“ i think that’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me, “ he teased, shrugging his shoulders to deflect from how easy it was to express his emotions. it wasn’t exactly exalted as a strength most of his life. forcing himself to try and get it together, cooper did his best to actually take in what she was saying. it would be pretty fucked up to just disassociate through this whole conversation. “ yeah, i guess what i should put my energy into what i should do next. pop was surly old bastard who just wanted everyone to be happy. so i guess happy is the goal. “

most people would balk at how much he had just shared but with cooper, it was a fraction of his life. three chapters at most. so as sayir grinned at him something loosened in his chest, shoulders dropping and he didn’t remember when they rose. listening eagerly, a smile on his lips that he’d caught from hers. “ i can’t say that’s wrong, always new places to go. beautiful things to see. new stories to tell. “ resisting the urge to flirt because mostly he was on the fuck love train these days. “ what can i say, i’m a fun guy. “ wiggling his eyebrows, well that lasted long. “ aw if you’re paying, does that mean i gotta put out? “ before she could respond, cooper felt a chill go up his spine as jackie side eyed the two of them. grabbing her soft and tiny hand, the country boy couldn’t drag the other out of there fast enough. maybe she’s right about all this shit.

@interchangestarts​  duckie’s   automatic   behavior   was   always   uncanny   to   watch      —   asleep   and   yet   continuing   on   with   regular   activities   ,   steady   dead   eyes   focused   on   what   he   was   doing   while   everything   else   happening   in   his   surrounding   was   not   quite   fully   perceived   .   he   was   in   the   middle   of   making   the   ramen   broth   when   he   suddenly   woke   up   ,   no   memory   of   what   he   had   been   doing   but   quickly   realizing   that   he   was   cooking   and   he   certainly   couldn’t   continue   that   because   he   didn’t   know   how   to   cook   for   shit   and   he   wasn’t   even  sure  which  step   he   was   in   if   he   tried   to   .   quickly   turning   the   stove   off   ,      a   loud   sigh   escaped   his   lips   .   the   last   thing   he   could   remember   was   binge  -  watching   ramen   tutorials   on   youtube   so   that   he   could   make   it   for   estelle   the   next   time   they’d   cross   paths   before   he   drifted   to   sleep   .         he   supposed   that   his   mind   just   went   ahead   to   get   some   practice   with   all   the   information   he   absorbed   while    he    was    asleep   .         down   bad   when   snoozing   .

now there were a lot of shit cooper had seen in his life : multiple fist fights, his siblings branding each other with the family brand, couple near death experiences too. yet as he was perched on the counter in the communal kitchen in the wee hours of the morning, the house was about as quiet as he had ever seen it. blue eyes flicking back and forth rapidly from the human who was definitely snoring but also ... cooking? the responsible big brother in him wanted to do something but already half way deep, he decided to let it play out. guess if the guy lights himself or something else on fire, i’ll be here. then the mystery man just woke up. 

pouting for a couple of seconds, thinking to himself. oh boo. that passed quickly enough though as cooper let out a loud snort, putting down his bowl of yogurt. “ listen here, english man. “ purposefully thickening his southern twang, cooper got dow from the counter with a twinkle in his eye. “ only if you tell me how the fuck you were cooking while asleep ? also why stovetop ramen ? “ herding him out of the way like a collie with sheep, cooper inspected the pot easily, humming to himself. “ my little brother sleepwalks but the most he’s ever done is change the horses hay. “ tasting the broth with a spoon, cooper smacked his lips a little. “ alright, you want ramen ? i can probably make some kind of soup out of this if that’s what awake you would prefer. “

if there was one thing tyler knew about food other than the sheer fact that he liked it, it was that he liked it even more when people were passionate about what they were cooking. it usually made for a better meal, and sauce was just about a big as part as any. “ i’m going to take your word for it. “ how couldn’t he when he was so adamant? and a secret family recipe to boot? the grill station really did seem to be in very capable hands. “ i’m sorry about your pop. “ he offered sincerely, dipping his fork in the barbecue sauce. “ i mean, i am on costume voting duty, i wouldn’t be doing my due diligence if i left quite yet. “ 

a grin spread across his face at the other’s words, raising his pair of tongs to the other in jest. “ good man, always trust the cook. “ blue eyes shone with excitement, it’d been a while seen cooper had much to do other than be sad. even the mention of his pop pop, it might have dimmed the glimmer in his eyes but he nodded and gave the kid a shrug as if to say  ‘ what can you do ? ’ before carrying on. “ i appreciate that man. “ costume contest? maybe i should have gone the extra mile for some shark skin body paint. banishing the thought to be back of his mind, cooper made sure to turn the next round of meat. “ i probably don’t have the best costume, noah and her stupid mermaid tail are pretty cool but between me and you, she wears it all the time. “

“ well lucky for you, the best barbeque sauce always has a good amount of spice to it. “ perfectly content to keep talking to this dude who obviously knew what he was talking about when it came to taste buds. “ according to my pop pop, it’s been around at least a hundred and twenty years. “

“ listen to me when i tell you, that chicken without the bbq sauce don’t hit the same and it’s a shame. “ plonking another piece on the other’s place, cooper also hit it with a rather large dash of sauce as well on the side. “ this is my maw maw’s secret recipe, since pop passed i figured it would be a nice tribute. “ the texan said all of this so seriously while having a styrofoam shark fin strapped to his back while shirtless and practically chained to the grill. “ promise me you’ll come back, it gets lonely on meat duty. “ @interchangestarts​

he didn’t take things very seriously , maybe it seemed that things didn’t really take their toll but in the same way , they did . the less he seemed to recognise the impact of his behaviour or the things happening to him , the worse he was becoming . still , he does attempt to offer some presence with cooper , “ you can pay , “ he nods as they walk through , a small chuckle at the comment about getting lucky . “ i don’t know if you heard but i’m pretty easy , “ just like that he was back to his old ways , the flirtation that was never quite all the way to being what people expected . finding their seats , across from cooper , “ do you actually want me as a rebound ? do you want me to do my performance or do you wanna actually do something here for real ? “ it’s an odd question but it’s meant as he pulls out a napkin and begins tearing off the edges simply wondering what the expectation was . he had many roles and he was willing to bring whatever energy was desired . 

rolling his eyes at the other’s joke, a smile still spread across his lips. “ i don’t always believe what i hear. you might be easy to get into bed but i doubt everything about you is easy. “ flirting was fun but after years of therapy, he could feel deflection before he could see it. humming and leaning one elbow on the table, the height of bad manners, cooper found himself answering honestly. “ i’m pretty sure i want to try for something real, “ pausing, a blush spread on his cheeks as he cleared his throat. “ you’re something of a riddle, somedays i feel like i understand you perfectly and others not so much. i like that about you. “ feeling like this got much too serious as blue eyes took in the bits of napkin that began to litter the table. “ i’m a pretty honest guy and right now, you’re already being everything i could want just by being you. dashing good looks and all. “

he was no stranger to affection , no reason to stray away or hide from it , he doesn’t even question coopers hand holding etiquette . “ i have been known to stray away from the crowd , “ he joked deciding not to do a little daddy joke . it was too early in the morning . dropping their hands into the middle as he began walking . “ so tell me , are we splitting the bill , is this my treat , yours ? i mean you got the break up but i got the divorce , i don’t know who needs more emotional support , “ he joked , away with the fairies but somehow he’d managed to remain sober this long . 

“ eh, crowds suck anyway. it’s more fun to be on your own, that’s when all my best moments happen. “ letting his feet lead him after everett, swinging their hands after a moment or two, just enjoying the weight of someone’s presence next to him for once. humming in thought before replying, “ let me pay. a divorce is way worse than a break up. “ the mood sobered for a second until he grinned and nudged the other’s shoulder. “ you let me treat you, alright? “ taking care of other people was what he was good at. the walk was shorter than he thought it would be, their romantic comedy plans of walking separately going out the window but he kind of liked it better this way. “ plus you know what they say, maybe i’ll get lucky. “
