Space The place is dead silent when Bad Cop comes home. No music, no television, not even a cacophony of kitchen appliances at work. He starts to think Benny must not be home yet, when he hears a sniffle back in the bedroom. He makes his way back and cautiously pushes the door open. “Ben…?” Benny looks up at him, eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Oh Ben, what happened…?”

At 5:00pm precisely B pulls up into the parking lot of the Space Corps campus and stares at his phone. Still no message from Benny. No matter, B knows he’s been hard at work the last few weeks. Benny, still grounded pending his psych evaluation, was desperate to prove himself useful to the Corps and worked tirelessly— running diagnostics, flight tests, everything to get his beloved ship Helva and her crew ship-shape for the launch in the next few weeks.

The custodian raps on the doorframe to B’s office, raises one hand in greeting and then thrusts it into the sleeve of his jacket. “‘Night, Chief. Don’t work too hard, huh?”

B smirks. It’s the same joke every night. “I won’t. Goodnight, Charlie,” he says, barely taking his eyes off the budget spreadsheet filling the computer screen. Just a bit more to go to get on top of this mess. Then back at it again in the morning.

Bits and Pieces

Stone In Love Benny woke to the sound of Journey being played at a frankly ridiculous volume, and grinned. Cleaning Day again; B was nothing if not predictable. He stretched and rolled out of bed to offer his assistance.

At least it wasn’t like when they’d first moved in together. Bad Cop liked to get up at six in the morning to get started. Benny, being something of a night owl who liked to sleep in til nearly 11, hated it. It had taken some- well, a lot- of arguing to get B to agree to wait until at least nine-thirty, and only because Benny promised he wouldn’t be a useless zombie at that point and would be able to help, making up for the later start.

(Not that Benny would have left B to do it all himself anyway, he wasn’t that lazy.)

Benny had come to love Cleaning Days that started with Journey. It meant B was in a really good mood, possibly even in a silly sweet mood and would serenade the astronaut. He grinned to see Bad Cop armed to the teeth with dust rags and Pledge spray. His grin widened when B got that look in his eyes and began to sing along with the blaring music.

“In the heat with a blue jean boy, burnin’ love comes once in a lifetime. He found me singing by the railroad tracks, took me home, we danced by the moonlight.”

Benny couldn’t help the delighted laugh that bubbled out of him, and danced over to peck B’s lips. That was probably his favorite thing in the world, when B would change the lyrics to songs just for him. The cop lifted him up, returning the kiss with enthusiasm. “What’s got you in such a good mood this morning?” He nearly melted at the look of adoration in those deep blue eyes.

“Those summer nights are calling, stone in love. Can’t help myself I’m falling stone in love.”

Man Upstairs, Benny hoped there’d be a lot more mornings like this in their future.

B has to brush his teeth and get to work, but he’ll be damned before he says that to Ben. This is not the time for rushing things. He’ll wait. He’ll wait until July if he has to. Today is an important day, and it has been a very long time coming.
