okay so I'm legitimately returning to tumblr after a 10+ year hiatus because I watched The Borgias and it's consumed my entire brain and I need somewhere to rant about it. First I watched The Borgias, then Borgia: Faith and Fear, then read The Family and Cesare: Il Creatore che ha distrutto, then read bios on Lucrezia and Cesare, then ate through pretty much all the fanfic on the internet, wrote my own, and also started making a few fan edits. the tragedy of coming to a fandom 10+ years too late, gotta put in work

What did they tell King Ferdinand of Naples about who Micheletto really was? Was he supposed to be Lucrezia's harmless chaperone? Because nobody seems worried about him. Alphonso should know who he is. Is he too scared to tell anybody? Did they not believe him?

I'm just trying to gauge the tone being set when Ferdinand starts talking about his pool of eels. Because he's either trying to frighten some random guy with his dubiously fun facts, or he's openly getting into a pissing contest with an assassin and spy about who is scarier.

Or even worse, he's telling the right hand man of Cesare Borgia, who he knows hates his guts "hey, here's a really convenient way to make my death look like an accident."

Is he an idiot? Does he think he's so untouchable that no one will hurt him? Is he not the chip off Ferrante's old block that he pretends to be? Is he going for some renaissance bro code moment where he thinks Micheletto agrees with him because only idiots care about what women want? Does he think there's no loyalty to Cesare and Micheletto's just in it for the work?

I love the show, but one of my few critiques is that we never get a good feeling for whether people know about Micheletto and how he serves Cesare, which leaves some loose ends. Historically, Micheletto was a well known figure and if people died suspiciously while he was around, fingers were being pointed. Obviously in that era people wouldn't have recognized him on sight, but if he's living at the court of Naples someone probably asked 'who is that guy?' at some point.

The way I choose to see it is as an extension of the theme of people underestimating the Borgia family, which runs throughout the show. Micheletto is kind of an extension/enabler of them crossing lines no one believes they will cross and outsmarting those who consider themselves masters of the game.

I guess Ferdinand falls into the same trap as Giovanni Sforza, Savonarola, the Cardinals, Della Rovere, etc. He thinks he's better, he thinks he's smarter, he thinks he's more vicious and he's wrong.

Anyway, I would have kept the thing about the man eating eels to myself.
