Papercraft commission of Frieren! I love this series, so I was extra excited to make this piece. ^_^
Since I had free choice of what spell to depict, I picked the Vollzanbel/black hole spell from the big magic fight in episode 25, because I thought it would look especially rad made out of shimmery holographic paper. Plus, I also got to make flying rocks! Bursts of fiery light! Lots of drama!! And, my favorite part - I got to go super, wildly detailed with Frieren's hair!

This Himmel art I made back in January... posting it now I did initially post it on Twitter/X though I was reminded that I made it when I saw it floating on Pinterest a couple days ago... what the 🥹
I completely forgot I did this! I must have done it earlier this year but my mind completely deleted it from my memory.

People who haven't seen Madoka Magica might not know this, but both the characters Mami and Homura are magical girls who use guns as weapons. But while Mami's gun are magical, Homura's are literally just normal guns she stole from the government.
i really really love the magical muskets for a really specific reason, which is that blackpowder guns are way older than people think and should 100% be treated with similar mythological weight to swords and spears and stuff at this point, and they should have equal prominence in generic fantasy fiction stuff.
lemme put it this way; european longswords and european cannons are siblings. they emerged at basically the same time in the early 1300s, and when the longsword was at its peak use in the mid-1400s, the musket was beginning to proliferate.
likewise, the 'modern' style of katana only started being made in the century leading up to the introduction of muskets to Japan; in fact, the reason the katana became The Samurai Sword was because it was a small practical blade you could wear while you carried a gun.
if you can picture your setting having a sword you can use with two hands, then you should have hand cannons. if your knights have full plate, then there should be matchlocks. if you have a magical girl with a sabre, then you should have magical girls with flintlocks.

It's interesting to me how so much of han sooyoung's behaviour aligns well with what her childhood was like. She was neglected by her parents and the world didn't know of her existence. So in the scenarios she makes sites she's recognised. Worshipped even. She decides to be selfish and take what she wants instead because who would ever give it to her? Growing up in a near empty house way too big for her has made her brash. Unable to connect with others in a meaningful way. Han sooyoung only ever had herself and that's clear in everything from her actions to even her avatar ability. She relies on copies of herself to support her. So to me it's no coincidence that both 1863 and 1864 hsy only ever show selflessness in a selfish manner too. Knowingly thrusting the whole world into the scenarios because one familiar lonely child that in some ways is a little bit too much like her. Pushing on over and over again to save her friend because everyone in kimcom (including her) is achingly lost without him. Han sooyoung is selfish down to her very core and that's what makes her han sooyoung.
