chewing on the fact that lawrenitez and lawrellini cannot escape each other. vincent benitez, innocentius, his holiness, the revered saint that aldo bellini will never be, who thomas will prostrate and kiss the feet of, who can do not wrong. and aldo, just aldo, who thomas sees and loves through all his flaws, his thouroughly mortal companion through thick and thin, loud and brash and imperfect. worship vs companionship, an angel vs. a man. i see a lot of fics where aldo is jealous of vincent, but not enough where vincent is just a tad bit envious of aldo’s and thomas’s raw, imperfect love for each other, devoid of worship.

[pulling up a chair] you're onto something--Aldo, who's so painfully aware of the places he falls short of perfection, could so easily be jealous of Thomas's worship of Vincent, who is effortlessly everything he is not. But not enough is said about Vincent--so grounded in his connection to other people, now forever severed from them--being jealous of Thomas and Aldo's potential to have an unvarnished love for each other. It is much easier for Thomas to love Aldo as human and not divine than to do the same for Vincent. And, conversely, Vincent gets to be loved by Thomas, but not in the way he wants. Both wanting what the other has...the angst potential is delicious <3

as a writer you will have a specific deck of vocab words you like using a lot and when you read other peoples' work you will see a very clear spread of different vocab words on their end. this is why you need to read, to collect other writers' words like it's a card game

funniest thing about conclave movie is that they changed "that firm hand of yours will have its admirers" to "has its admirers" present tense. suddenly it's not "you will be greatly admired as pope." it's "pope or not, i admire you right now..."

bellini as the accidental president of the lawrence fan club. cardinal landolfi, who cast 5 votes for bellini, somehow got a printout on lawrence from his secretary (it's a wikipedia page) and reads it to bellini at the dinner table. "i was his friend for twenty years, i know this." he reaches for his wineglass and sees cardinal dell'acqua taking notes on lawrence's greatest hits.

"why do i feel like a fan of an indie musician that just went mainstream," he asks sabbadin, who will surely understand.

sabbadin takes a drag of his cigarette. "i can hardly disapprove of the manner in which he made tremblay look like a large and hapless dog."

even after benitez is elected lawrence doesn't completely fade into the shadows.

"well," bellini says at their weekly meeting, looking very harassed. "have we decided our next steps?"

lawrence looks up from his stack of reports. "next steps for what?"

"whatever happened to the article cardinal contreras threatened to run in politico?"

"oh, that. we had a chat about it on tuesday. i was able to dissuade him."

"dissuade...? he assured me quite rudely that he would make no secret of what he views as innocent's 'dangerously radical humanism.' that was monday. i don't know how you do it." bellini takes his glasses off and rubs his eyes. it was foolish of him to accept secretary of state again.

lawrence looks at him with concern. "i think diplomatic matters can wait, aldo. when have you last slept?"

and that's how he ends up on lawrence's sofa, tucked up against lawrence's shoulder while he reads one of his thick tomes of detective novels masquerading as scholarly literature, so all things considered, life isn't too bad.
