five word prompts
Days of war within the Rebellion were tough and people could be there one day and gone the next. Depending on how mission’s went also depended on the mood of everyone who was there at the base. There had been hard losses after this particular one, not as many as what had happened on Scarif but they were still hard to bear and seemed to get harder every single time. Torin was blessed because he still had Kieran in his life. The thought of losing him terrified him to his very core because if he lost him, he’d lose an actual part of himself. He wanted to talk to Cassian, he needed some advice on a situation that he’d thought of in his mind and before he even contemplated on telling Kieran, he was going to go to the older male, a man that was pretty much an older brother to Torin, for help in figuring out if it was the best thing for him to do. To Torin advice from Cassian always helped him solidify what he was going to do and he really needed the advice this time. This wasn’t a small thing he’d thought about, Marriage was a big commitment and he wanted to know Cassian’s thoughts. It took a while for the young pilot to find the other. His searching took him to one of the secluded rooftops, finally tracking the Captain down to there. This was a place Cassian sometimes came when he wanted to be alone but Torin hoped his presence wasn’t annoying by any means. It wasn’t his intention. However, just as he’d uttered, “Cassian, I need to...” the older male spoke before he could finish and it really did seem that Cassian wanted to be on his own and it didn’t matter who it was that had come calling on him. Of course, the understood that but it didn’t mean that Torin wasn’t a little hurt by the words. He closed his mouth, pursing his lips before letting out a slight sigh. For a few long moments, he stood there in silence, wondering if he should call him out on how he’d just spoken or leave it. The easiest often seemed to be to leave it, he didn’t want to fight with Cassian ever. So he wasn’t going to start then. “Fine. I’m sorry for bothering you.” There was a slight harsh edge to his words but that couldn’t be help, he was still feeling the hurt the words had caused. With a sigh, he shook his head and trned as if to walk away.

It was early, too early for most of the pilots but after Scarif, Torin wasn’t sleeping. He’d lost friends, some he’d known since he’d arrived on Yavin 4 with his parents. He usually let things slide off him because this was a war and sometimes there were losses but these were a little harder to bear. He had pulled on a thick tunic, the early morning air was brisk and cold. Once he’d slipped his boots on, he slipped out of his quarters with his arms folded across his chest as he wandered through the main hangar. There were barely people around and for once, Torin was happy with that. He still bore some scrapes, scratches and bruises from the battle. He spent all of his time in the air and there had been a few moments where he was almost taken out by Tie Fighters. He made his way over to his X-Wing and looked at the damage. There was some engine damage that he knew his droid should be the one to fix up most of it but he had the time and it wasn’t like he was going to be sleeping any time soon. He heard a noise on to the otherside of his ship and ducked under it, wincing as the injury on his side hurt. Torin saw Jyn on the other side of the ship and he gave her a small, knowing smile, “You can’t sleep either?” He got it, he understood.
Sleep was a luxury few people seemed to have these days. But that was apart of war wasn’t it? You watched friends die and were haunted by their memories when you tried to rest. Or that’s how things seemed to be. Jyn still wasn’t that familiar with the whole concept. Scarif had taken so much from her though that she didn’t think there’d be anything else to take. At least not for a long while. Maybe when she made friends, became a real part of this rebellion, she’d have something to lose again.
She only vaguely recognized the other man. Passed him in the halls and hanger but never really spoke to him. In turn she offers her own small smile, just as knowing and incredibly tired looking. Pulling her coat tighter around her shoulders, Jyn closes the distance between them. Dares to cast a glance over towards his damaged x-wing.”
“I take it you can’t sleep either.”
It was best to remember faces when it came to people around the base and commit them to memory because it was never certain you’d see that person again after a mission was over. That was true for all of them and especially those that had lived through what had happened on Scarif. And sleep loss was predictable after experiencing what the members of the Rebellion dealt with daily. This latest fight was one of the hardest he’d ever been a part of. When he thought back to seeing Keiran laying on the sand, it made his throat tighten. He’d almost lost him this time and he couldn’t allow it to happen again. Another reason he wasn’t sleeping was the worry he’d wake up and Kieran would be gone. When he saw Jyn, Torin knew that she barely knew him but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to see if she was ok. It didn’t matter if you knew someone or not, everyone had been through the same thing and seeking out others to offer help and comfort, was sometimes a way of getting your own. Kieran was still recovering, sleeping peacefully finally back in their quarters but he was unable to. He caught the smile that she gave him back, seeing a similar one to his there. “I can’t settle.” He said with a light shrug before he folded his arms across his chest. “My partner, Keiran, he was injured badly on Scarif....I don’t think i’ll be able to sleep until he’s recovered.” Torin smiled softly before gesturing to her, “You and your team we’re incredible out there.” was the next thing that the young man offered to her, the small smile still playing on his lips, “It was your first battle though...wasn’t it?” Torin knew how trauamtising they could be to him still, let alone someone who had experienced it for the first time.
Sleep Starters
“How late were you up last night?”
“You’re not pulling another all-nighter, not if I can do anything about it.”
“Aren’t you cold? I can go get you some blankets!”
“Are you alright? I thought I heard you talking in your sleep.”
“Don’t worry, you’re alright. It was just another nightmare.”
“I don’t want to get up!”-“You can’t make me go to bed!”
“Can you turn your music down? Some of us are trying to sleep!”
“That looks highly uncomfortable. How do you even sleep like that?!”
“I didn’t mean to wake you up…”
“Don’t you think it’s getting awful late?”
“Sweet dreams!”
“I didn’t get a wink of sleep last night.”
“You said some interesting things in your sleep last night.”
“Did you have another bad dream?”
“Come on, let’s just go to sleep.”
“You look exhausted. Did you get any sleep last night?”

She looked towards where he’d turned from, already thinking about her escape route to get away from the Stormtroopers as quickly as she could. She certainly didn’t need to find herself on the other end of their blasters. That was one fight that she didn’t want to get into. Particularly when it was likely that it would get back to her mother. “Kriff.” The Jedi let out a small annoyed noise, before looking around to take in her surroundings. “Well, this certainly isn’t the way I need to go.”
Torin was just thinking about getting out of there and making sure that the person he’d almost knocked over got out of there safely as well. He at least owed her that much. Without even thinking, when he heard them moving towards them, he gripped her hand and raised his eyebrows at her, “We need to hide. If they capture me......well, it’ll be bad.” There was no other way he could put it. He also relalised that just grabbing her hand and dragging her along with him might not be a good idea, so he dropped it and gestured with his head, “Follow me.” And with that, he set off in a run, wanting to get away as quickly as possible.

All Torin could really remember was it feeling like his heart was going to hammer out of his chest. For the first time in a long time, Torin hadn’t flown a ship to go into battle on Scraif. He’d been a part of the ground assualt. The explosions, the constant yells - he hadn’t been used to it. The reason he’d gone out as part of the ground soldiers was because of Keiran. It was plain and simple. Ever since Keiran had defected and ended up with the Rebellion, the two had only grown closer, to the point where they were now closer than ever and, in a word, in a relationship. Of course, what they had, was something that most people knew so when Keiran had volunteered, Torin was right there with him. There was no way that he’d let Keiran go into this on his own. And whilst, at the time it had been a good idea, things had quickly got away from the two of them when they’d finally got through the gate and to the beach. They’d been separated almost immediately and after that it had been a frantic fight to keep himself alive whilst trying to kill stormtroopers and find Keiran. The hammering of his heart had only intensified. The young pilot had been certain that he was having a panic attack. He’d been thrown to the ground after one explosion and then almost trampled to death by an AT-ACT but he’d still been orientated by finding his boyfriend because if anything happened to Kieran, Torin really didn’t know what he would do. It had been easier when love hadn’t been a complication but he wouldn’ change having Kieran in his life for anything. When he thought he was going to die and Kieran lost amongst the madness, he’d spotted him, lying in the sand, only managing to get to him just in time before a ship found them and took them off the surface before it was destroyed by the Death Star. That had been only a day or so ago but Kieran was still in need of taking care of and Torin was refusing to let him out of their shared quarters. He was doing all the pathing up, luckily knowing exactly what he was doing because his mother had taught him. It was definitely good having a medic for a mother. It was early, but Torin hadn’t slept, he’d been watching Kieran sleep, making sure that nothing changed with his condition over the course of the night. He moved to sit on the end of the bed, checking one of the bandages, pursing his lips when he saw it needed changing. Leaning down, he kissed the top of Kieran’s head before he slowly got to work. He didn’t want to wake the other so he worked as quietly as he could. Kieran needed his rest - Torin did as well, the bags under his eyes showed that more and more with each passing hour but he needed to take care of the one person in his life that he knew he couldn’t live without. As he knew the other would start stirring soon, he lowered his head so he could whisper in Kieran’s ear, “Shh. I’m just changing your bandages.” He kissed Kieran’s temple and sat upright again, wincing as the reminder of his own injuries came when he too moved. He just wanted to move quickly.

Bounty Hunters were on Torin’s list of people that he wasn’t sure what he thought of them. But when he’d come across a young woman, injured as he was stocking his ship with supplies, he’d brought her on board - obviously, before finding out exactly what she was and who she was trying to collect on. It was just his luck that he’d bring a Bounty Hunter on board and then get murdered by people that had come to stop her. Maybe he was overreacting just a little but the fear was there. He reached for a small medpack he had on the ship and brought it over to where the woman, Isabelle, as she’d told him, was lay on the only bed within the ship. “Someone didn’t want you to take them in?” He said as he gestured to the wound. He stood next to her and opened the kit, pursing his lips, “You ending up here bettoe not end up with me being killed for helping you...” He said as he began patching her up.

rebelcourage:
“ Fifty one times after I said it to you,” he replies dryly. And that would be Cassian’s attempt at humor. ( Clearly, it’s not one of his fortes. It’s something Kaytoo excels far better at. ) Cassian shifts, so that he’s sitting upright a bit more on the bed. He stares at Torin in that usual unnerving way of his. It’s been commented on multiple times in the past that such intense, direct staring can cause people discomfort. If anyone asked and Cassian bothered to answer, he would say that he’s studying people. But deep down, it’s just Cassian trying to engrave people into his memory. Because he’s lost so many. There’s never a guarantee that who you are with today will be alive tomorrow.
Torin is one of the few people in Cassian’s life where he’s hyperaware of how much distance maintained between them. Because there are moments when Cassian thinks he has a better understanding of how his older brother, Elanis, felt about him. Cassian’s been protective of Torin, since the younger male’s early days in the Rebellion. He’s careful not to cross the threshold. You get too emotionally invested in someone, and before you know it– something happens to them. Anyways, what right does Cassian have to be anything more than a Captain to Torin? To be an older brother … That’s a kind of honor Cassian doesn’t deserve.
Cassian’s eyes flicker downwards. He’s not sure how to respond to what Torin says. Cassian doesn’t regret the lengths Rogue One went in order to send out the Death Star plans. But that still does not alleviate the raw pain of what and who people have lost. Cassian is tempted to crawl his way back into work. All just so he can dive headfirst into meetings and ‘ civil debates ‘ and missions and– Cassian closes his eyes when he hears the echoes of his partner’s voice in his mind. Funny how someone who has loved you so long, so strong can grow into the voice of your subconscious. Right now, Kaytoo’s voice is telling Cassian to breathe. To be patient. To let himself heal. Because even workaholicsm is destructive, no matter how much of a distraction it would give right now.
“ Let’s keep talking as we walk. Need to stretch my legs anyways. “ Cassian is already moving off the bed. He can walk fine. It’s his upper body that aches the most, and his hands still hold a tremor. Cassian doesn’t get very far before medics approach him, ready to forcefully drag him back. “ I’m only going for a walk,” Cassian reassures, then points a thumb over at Torin. “He’ll make sure I’m on my best behavior. “
They manage to make it out of the medbay, and go to one of the secluded rooftops of the base. Cassian folds his arms to rest them upon the ledge. “ … you matter too, kid. “ He’s thinking back on what Torin said earlier. ( ‘ Your mission or the plans was the only thing that mattered. ‘ ) Cassian keeps his gaze on the horizon. He reaches up to run his fingers through his hair, hand brushing across the scars on his face. “ Don’t ever think for a second that you’re just a name on a roster. Or an expendable number. “ He looks down at his hands. The tremors still won’t go away no matter how hard he tries. Cassian exhales. “ What else is on your mind? “
At Cassian’s admission, Torin laughed a little as he looked down and shook his head. Of course he’d be the person to ask one too many times but he cared about the older male and wanted to make sure he was doing ok. When he lifted his head, he rolled his eyes and raised an eyebrow, “I won’t ask again but at least you know I care.” He pointed out, his second eyebrow joining the first. As Cassian watches him, Torin refuses to look away because his eyes are very unnerving. Torin had got used to it by then but it didn’t make it any less unnerving when it did happen. Torin understood why though, all of them had that look before they went on missions because, realistically, no one ever knew who would make it back alive. For an only child, Torin had always wondered why his parents hadn’t had any other children but when he’d witnessed the things he had in his time with the Rebellion, then that was when he’d realised they didn’t want to bring another child into a world with so much unrest. And it wasn’t like Torin had ever been lonely as a kid, he always found a way to make friends. He would literally force his way into people’s lives if he had to. So there was that as well. However, that didn’t mean that he was still okay with being an only child, maybe he wasn’t and in that respect, a part of him saw Cassian as one would look at an older brother. Of course, he kept that to himself because he didn’t know exactly how that would be recieved by the older male. When he saw the expression that crossed Cassian’s face, a frown creased Torin’s brow just a little ashe wasn’t sure if he should take back the question or not. He hadn’t intended to make the Captain feel any kind of negative but he assumed, by the expression he had. Torin wasn’t good with any of this either so he wasn’t sure if he was making ay kind of difference or just makibg it harder for Cassian. But he was trying and that had to stand for something right? He hoped it did. Torin was always going to be there for Cassian ,even when he was sure that the man would tell him he didn’t need to worry. That wasn’t how it worked. A relieved expression took over Torin’s featured and hazel eyes widened as he saw Cassian begin to move from where he’d been for the entirity of their meeting so far. He wasn’t entirely sure that the Captain should be moving but it wasn’t his place to argue. “Okay. But take it easy, I can’t carry you if you end up on the floor.” He pointed out with a wry smile and a little chuckle. Torin watches as the medics approach and wonder if they have some kind of death wish if they’re about to stop Cassian from going anywhere but when he sees the thumb jab in his direction and he gave them a blinding smile, “I will. I don’t mind smacking him if he gets out of line or dragging him back to the medbay” He wiggled his eyebrows in Cassian’s direction and grinned. It’s a slow walk to the secluded rooftop they end up standing on but Torin didn’t mind. He lent his arms against the ledge and looked out over the greenery of the planet. There was no doubt that Yavin 4 was a beautiful place for a base. He frowned at Cassian’s words and then rememered the conversation from not so long ago. Torin ducked his head down and nodded it just a little. “I know…” He mumbled a little as he glanced at Cassian, they all mattered, he knew that but sometimes it was hard to focus on that when so many people were being lost. Torin then sighs a little and turns around so he’s leaning back against the ledge, gaze fixed ahead. “I lost people I grew up with today….I almost lost my dad.” He shrugs his shoulders, still keeping his gaze fixed ahead. “….I still don’t know how to process all of this…..” Finally he glanced at Cassian and shook his head, “Ignore me. I’m just tired.”
