Another thing I love so much about Rose and Shane’s friendship (and another thing that makes it so sad for Rose that they never would have worked out romantically) is the fact that they’re both so obsessive about and isolated by their careers.
they’re both devoting their entire body minds and souls to an industry that actively harvests their souls and sucks the fucking marrow out their bones.
it’s submitting themselves to constant judgement, attention, vitriol, bigotry, exhaustion, moral conflict, self hatred….
and it’s all for the chance to pursue their passion in life.
who else understands that?
even other actors and athletes might not. It’s so rare to not only get as much success as either of them, but to care so much as to continue to dive into that firestorm.
Most people, if they’re not awe struck or hateful, are overwhelmed and intimidated by the pure black-hole obsession, to do the things they do.
are disgusted by the people they associate with to get to where they are, or are jealous of their wealth and opportunities.
And even the rare few who could manage all that would never logistically make sense. The global travel, the vicious media attention, the jealousy that comes with your spouse being surrounded by the most desired people in the world…
I think it must have felt like divine intervention for Rose too, when she met Shane.
in that same way that she was the perfect woman for him on the surface, not only beautiful and funny and kind, but equally as talented and successful and ambitious,
Shane must have been like a sign of life from the universe for Rose. Proof that there could be a man who she not only liked and was good for her, but was like her.
I think Shane never being able to love her romantically would have been really hard for both of them. Not just because of the loss of those few months where they were together, but what, in another life, could have been.
but, I also think them knowing each other at all would regardless, be sooooo fucking important for them both. Here is proof that someone like me can be good. Can be worthy of love, and can also find it, and have it and keep it.
and it’s not all sad, because they don’t lose each other either. They’re always going to be best friends, and they’re always going to understand each other on a fundamental level.
this is why I don’t buy the idea that Shane and Rose are ever just, ‘casual friends’ after they break up, or that Rose doesn’t get alone with Ilya.
Ilya and Shane are so similar, that I think just about all this would apply to him and Rose as well.
I also think Svetlana would fit neatly in here too. Someone who’s ambitious and cutting and formidable and skilled.
