charles is such a highly empathetic character despite the facade he puts on. he truly just wants people to find joy in passions and that’s so beautiful. he himself is so passionate about music and literature (albeit in a snobby way usually) but he also tries to help others achieve joy too
the first thing i think of is that soldier with the stutter who has such a passion for reading but was made to feel like he wasn’t worthy of the classics and charles helped him see that he was
another example is charles helping the pianist who damaged his hand learn to love playing again. he thought his joy was taken away but charles once again went out of his way to help him find it again and you can tell that the soldier finding that joy again made charles happy too

Here’s another mash edit I made back in January after my friend got me thinking about this song
charles replacing frank was the best decision ever imo. at first it was nice to have a character you could so easily hate but after long enough you don’t need him to be that role because the war itself became that much more clearly than it was before. i like that charles is a little snobby and pretentious but also a character who has empathy for others, who can be kind, who can be grateful, who at the end of the day, is a friend

m*a*s*h screenshot i've been getting a lot of use out of since january 20th of this year. in case anyone needs it
I have realized that the perfect form of media must have a delicate balance between absolutely heart wrenching pure emotional devastation and the most ridiculous nonsense you have ever seen in your whole life
One of BJ's major character flaws that we see as the series goes on is how jealous he gets. He's jealous of men back home that his wife has to rely on and he's jealous of Radar for seeing Erin. He seethes over these things and then he usually gets called out for it and we see that it's really just his insecurity over being so far away from his family and not being able to help them. The fact that he's jealous of Trapper makes my inner fangirl go wild. It's such a good way to show how attached he becomes to Hawkeye. He met this guy less than a year ago and he's jealous of the long gone best friend he never met. He puts Hawkeye on the same level as his wife and daughter without hesitation, becoming jealous that he wasn't there for Hawkeye from the moment he got to Korea.
I know part of his jealousy is that Trapper was allowed to go home to his family and I'm not saying his jealousy is a good thing. I just think it's such an interesting thing to intentionally work into the show. He doesn't like the idea that his wife is replacing him, but he doesn't like the idea of being Trapper's replacement either.
I'm done rambling now. I'll show myself out.

it’s such an interesting thing in dreams how maragaret, hawkeye, and charles all feel like they aren’t able to do enough. they are all portrayed as such confident characters but it’s all a facade. at some point all of them are just watching people die in their dreams feeling helpless and it speaks volumes about their self perceptions.
the fact that margaret’s dream lover walks into the line of soldiers shows how margaret feels her love life is intertwined with the army and she struggles to see what she has outside of that because the army is the only lifestyle she’s known. there are multiple soldiers dying in her bed which shows how overwhelmed she feels with the casualties and is another indicator that the army in intertwined with her love life because it wasn’t just any bed, it was HERS. the bed she sleeps in and the bed she was just in with her lover.
charles kept doing magic tricks and everyone was clapping and to me this feels like a reference to his childhood as he’s mentioned before how his father is and he might feel as though he needs to please people. when the patient is dying he starts to rapidly perform magic tricks, then moves on to dancing with the sparklers. he doesn’t feel like what he’s doing is really making a difference, the patient is still dying no matter what trick or miracle he performs. the dancing feels like a last ditch effort to save the patient, he’s desperate and panicking but it still wasn’t enough in the end.
hawkeye literally gave his arms up in his dream which shows you how he feels like he’s giving up pieces of himself to save these patients. the lake full of arms and legs feels like they’re his and other peoples. he’s essentially swimming in them, surrounded by them. he’s given up his arms and legs and it still isn’t enough. when he sees that little girl bleeding out he looks away from her and more specifically he looks down in shame. he feels so ashamed that he can’t do more to help these kids because he can only do so much but it isn’t enough for him. when he gets to the operating table and a nurse is trying to hand him a scalpel to save a patient he can’t pick it up because he doesn’t have any arms, because no matter how much he tries and wants to, he can’t help in the way he wants to and in a way that truly matters to him.
these three characters are ones portrayed as being so confident in their abilities yet they are the most insecure and fearful that it isn’t enough
truly one of my least favourite episodes of mash is goodbye, cruel world (season 8 episode 21). i don’t like how they treated klinger or how they made fun of the items he used to decorate the clerks office/his room. it felt very discriminatory and it makes me uncomfortable watching it
and the world don’t stop every time that you fall (there’s a heartbreak beat playing all night long)
purged this from my soul in November after feeling a lot of MASH emotions, enjoyyyy
I finally drew him halfway decent 💖 ough I love him sm
