Who the Hell is Steve? -Chapter one: Nightmares
Steven Grant Rogers was suppose to be America's golden boy. But what if he fell off the train instead of Sergeant James Barnes?
Agent June McKay has been with SHEILD for close to six years now, she has fought next to the best, including Captain Barnes. Aka Captain America. But what she doesn't expect is for his "long lost" best friend to show up, fighting them, and having no recollection of Barnes.
This story is going to follow "Captain America The Winter Soldier" as best as I can from memory. There will be some changes aspects of it but for the most part will be derived from the movie. I also do not own any marvel characters. I do own June McKay and her backstory.
The high pitched whine of a Hydra weapon charging pierced his ears before it discharged, causing blue energy to explode next to him as cold air nipped at his face.
Quickly shooting the Hydra agent in the face, Bucky stood proud before Steve's cries caught his attention.
"Bucky! Help me!" Rushing over to the gaping hole in the train, he saw his best friend dangling over the cliff side, hanging desperately into the railing.
Without warning, Steve's screams chilled Bucky to the core as he watched his best friend fall into the snowy landscape.
Tears streamed down his face as he now realized he was in a desolate building. Chairs and tables covered in soot and dried blood. He recognized this place as his favorite bar, the one he and Steve visited just before-
"Why Bucky? Why did you let me fall? Why didn't you save me?"Ā Spinning around, Bucky's eyes widened in horror at the sight in front of him; Steve was covered in blood and snow, his eyes glazed over and frostbite had covered his body. His blonde hair a mixture of bald spots and matted down with dried blood.
"Why didn't you come after me? WHY BUCKY?!"Ā Steve's hands reached for his throat and started to tighten quickly. Bucky clawed at Steve's frostbitten hands as they cut off his airways. He tried to beg and apologize, he tried to tell Steve he wished it was him; but Steve kept tightening his grip until Bucky began to see spots.
Gasping, James bolted upright in his bed, gripping the sheets as he looked around frantically to try and calm his heart rate as well as ease his anxiety. Inhaling deeply, he felt a small weight on the end of his bed; reaching over, his left hand raked through soft white fur, a low rumbling noise began to emit from the cat.
"Hey Alpine," he whispered, running his right hand through his own matted hair in an attempt to get it off his forehead. The little cat stood up and stretched before lazily planting himself on James' lap. Smiling, he continued to pet the cat, his dream replaying over and over again in his mind.
"Maybe we should go for a run, yeah?" He asked Alpine. The cat continued to pur as he buried himself deeper into his lap. James chuckled as he picked up the white cat and placing him on his cat bed next to his own.
Sighing, James stripped the bed and threw the sheets into the hallway to deal with later before jumping in the shower.
The cold water contrasted harshly against his hot skin; standing with his face to the stream, he allowed the water to wash away the sweat, almost as if he was try to was away the bad memories that refused to leave him alone.
Once out, he dressed in running clothes before petting Alpine once more and grabbing a banana. Walking out of his apartment, he turned to lock the door when he heard his neighbor close hers.
"McKay, good morning," he greeted.
"Morning Cap. Nightmares?" She asked, quickly falling into step next to the soldier.
"Yup," she answered, popping the P as they made their way down the steps and out the front door of their building.
"Same shit it's been since New York," she whispered as they fell into step with each other, starting out their run with a light jog.
James nodded without another word. He knew what she was talking about; he was almost just out of the ice when Loki decided to attack the city of New York. He got maybe a month to try and acclimate to modern day before being thrown back into another war.
During the battle, McKay saw something no normal person should ever see.
As they were fighting the weird aliens, Chitauri as Natasha later told them, one of them must have blown a hole in the side of a building or what not. McKay saw the debris falling and ran to rescue the woman standing underneath, who was helping someone else. But she was too late. They were both crushed, dead before she could do anything.
"Barnes, how many times I gotta tell ya. Call me June," she interrupted, a light laugh escaping her lips as the pair sped up.
"Then you have to call me James," he teased back, lightly running into her to shove her off her course. June rolled her eyes before they fell back into comfortable silence for about a mile until they spotted someone ahead of them.
"Hey, should we?" James asked, a smirk playing on his lips. June chuckled as she nodded and threw out an outstretched hand as if to tell him to go ahead.
James smiled devilishly as he ran towards the man at full speed, finally able to use everything within him to run.
"On your right," he said huskily as he ran past the man in the gray sweatshirt. Running around the reflection pool, James was able to catch up to the man once again in a short amount of time.
"Uh huh on my right. I got it,"
James laughed as he passed the man again. As he ran passed June, he motioned for her to join him again. Nodding, he slowed down just enough for her to fall into step before speeding up.
"Don't say it! Don't you-"
June and James both shared a laugh as they ran another two laps around the reflection pool.
"Don't you think that was a bit mean?" She teased. James laughed as he shook his head, pointing that he was sitting in the shade near the park. Jogging up to him, June offered him her water. Taking it with gratitude, he took a big sip before looking up at the pair.
"Man, how the hell did you do that? You ran what? Fifteen miles in thirty minutes?" He asked, chuckling softly as he handed back the water bottle.
"Looks like I got a late start," James chuckled.
"Shame! Shame on you!" The man laughed. June laughed quietly as she sat down in the dew covered grass next to James.
"James Barnes," he greeted, holding his hand out to help him up.
"Yeah I gathered. Sam Wilson," he laughed, taking James's hand and standing up with a grunt.
"June McKay," June introduced herself as she stood back up. Sam smiled flirtatiously as he shook her hand.
"You serve?" June asked, pointing towards his sweatshirt. It was decorated with a small emblem on the chest of a unit number along with some planes.
"Oh yeah. 58th para rescue. Two tours; but now I serve down at the VA. You both should stop by sometime," he said, almost speaking pointedly at June. She nodded with a slight smile on her face before her phone beeped, grabbing her attention.
Showing the phone to James, he read the text from Natasha and nodded. A mission, of course; what better way to start the day?
"Well Sam, duty calls. We'll catch you later," June said just as a loud black vehicle rolled up to the curb. The window rolled down, revealing a small red head behind the wheel.
"Morning. Anyone know where I can pick up a fossil as well as a mentally unstable bitch?" She asked with a smirk on her lips.
"Haha very funny Natty," June chuckled as she got into the back seat.
"I'll catch you later Sam!" James called as he ducked down into the passenger seat. Sam waved as he smiled and winked at Nat, who only smiled became before continuing to pester June.
"Oh you know you love me, Junie," Natasha laughed as they sped away from the curb. June laughed as she looked out her window; she loved Nat like her own sister, and she especially loved to poke fun at her.
"Only in your wildest dreams,"
"Alright girls that's enough," James laughed as he reached for the file sitting on the dash; reading over it, it vaguely explained their mission.
The Lemurian Star was hijacked by pirates, and of course he had to deal with them.
"Twenty-five pirates all led by Batroc, holding mostly techs. One officer for some reason: Jasper Sitwell,"
"Well, let's go kick some ass," June replied, an evil smirk playing on her lips as she pretended to crack her knuckles. Natasha laughed as she looked at the brunette in the rear view.
"Imma kick your ass if you keep this up,"
"Junie, calm down. It's an extraction and-"
"And an extraction also calls for kicking ass, Natty." She interrupted, flicking the red head in the back of the head.
