back when my bf was starting to get me into ff7, he asked me (after a long winded rant from me about the literary genius of metal sonic as a character) if cloud would be sonic or shadow. and i told him that cloud would be metal sonic. we hadn’t finished the og ff7 yet but i knew that cloud was not a true, heroic protagonist or a dark, vengeful rival. he came off awkward and stilted, like he was playing a role rather than being himself.

additionally, i likened his hatred of sephiroth to how metal sonic hated sonic. i was unintentionally on the money with this!! the hatred of something which you are meant to be a pale imitation of, the simultaneous recognition that you owe you're very existence and current identity to that which you seek to destroy.

if you’re white and wanna write a poc character and feel awkward about it i implore you to ignore any twitblr stuff treating it as a massive ethical burden and instead come in more with the same mindset you’d have if you wanted to write about idk firefighters but didn’t know anything about firefighters so you do... research. If I were writing about firefighters I'd also, in addition to just reading about them, take advantage of Our Blessed Internet to ask actual firefighters about how shit works. I'd do the same for a minority I'm not a part of.

I remember when there was this LiveJournal community where you could just ask about anything you needed for your novel - medicine, professions, vehicles, how things function in country X - and people who knew something about that would answer.

We need to bring this back.
