WELT: One of your latest works shows British pop star Harry Styles at a concert. The picture follows on from earlier works: Madonna Concert, Mayday, Cocoon Club, the Toten Hosen. Why Harry Styles?
Gursky: He performed in Düsseldorf and contacted me. We met here in the studio and were sympathetic. I don't think I would have come up with the idea of working with him on my own. And what distinguishes this picture from the ones I made before is the audience, which consists of 99 percent young women. And that the mobile phone plays such a dominant role at a concert. I wanted to address the fact that everyone is trying to hold it with their mobile phone, a phenomenon that is currently very typical of the time.
WELT: Did you know Harry Styles before?
Gursky: Only when I was sitting at the computer while editing the picture, I consciously heard Harry Styles and also became fond of him.
WELT: Did he come up with the idea that I want to work with Andreas Gursky?
Gursky: He was interested in my work.
WELT: And how do you implement such a picture?
Gursky: I photographed at two concerts, and that was a stroke of luck. When I was in Frankfurt, I had to determine his outfit. I opted for beige leather pants and a tight-fitting sleeveless white ribbed shirt. The shoes were from this collaboration of Adidas and Gucci – by chance I was wearing the same ones that day. After the first concert, I realized that it didn't work one hundred percent. And then he appeared in Emilia-Romagna, with this sequin-embroidered jumpsuit. I knew right away: this is a gift.
WELT: And what is that for a pop star ego, if he is only shown from behind?
Gursky: I didn't even talk to him about it, he only knew the picture in small by SMS. But he has now looked at it in peace in my London exhibition and has also acquired it. Which I found surprising, because the picture is huge. And it's not comfortable either. But he is only 31 years old. There will certainly be contexts later where it fits.
WORLD: And it would be kind of crazy if he didn't have the picture. Did he have to pay the list price?
WELT: Are you busy during the concert that the recordings work or do you feel like the girls who are screaming? Do you feel the magic of the moment?
Gursky: That would be nice. No, I work with big cameras that take over me. If I want to depict all the spectators in the picture, then I have to photograph in sections. I constantly check if the pictures are shaky, if the light is right. I can only deal with the emotions of the actual concert to a limited extent.
