I’ve seen several IF authors gets asks from what looks like the same anti-poly troll. Because of course no one else can enjoy something that you don’t like. 🙄 And I had a brain fart, born of solidarity and spite.
I don’t plan on poly routes in Cantata, but if I did, it’d probably go something like this.
You and Bayram glide effortlessly through the grand ballroom amidst the other dancing couples, the sparkles from the grand chandelier reflected in the sequins of your partner’s robes. He’s a surprisingly good dancer, leading you through the set with grace and ease.
You lean forward and press a quick kiss to his lips.
He breaks into a wide grin, his hand at your waist tightening. “What was that for, tatlim?”
“To thank you for being you,” you reply with a small shrug. “For keeping me safe here.”
“Of course,” he says, sparing a quick glance at the regis seated at the head of the room. “I will never leave you alone with him. And you know I’m not the only one looking out for you.”
“Ah, yes, I wondered if you’d forgotten me.” A silky smooth voice cuts in to Bayram’s right. Vicente rests his hand against the small of Bayram’s back, stilling your dance. “It’s time to share,” he says, eyes on you.
“You had MC the entire ride here,” Bayram pouts.
“Only because you don’t like horses,” you point out.
Bayram shudders. “Smelly beasts.”
Vicente rubs his hand soothingly down the other man’s back. “It’s probably time the Tinebaillese envoy greeted my father anyway.”
A mischievous glint alights in Bayram’s eyes. “Oh, don’t threaten me with a good time, tatlim. I’ve been looking forward to this. Your father looks about ready to spit,” Bayram chuckles, looking over Vicente’s head. “You sure you didn’t start this relationship just to spite him?” Bayram waggles his eyebrows, but you can tell by his tone he’s merely teasing.
A slow grin parts Vicente’s lips. “It’s an added benefit. But no. There are easier ways of pissing off my father that don’t require me having to endure your snoring.”
“Ha!” Bayram throws his head back and laughs. He clamps a hand behind Vicente’s neck and tugs him against the two of you, claiming his lips in a brief, but deep kiss. Then he steps neatly out of your arms, gently maneuvering you toward your new partner.
Vicente watches Bayram glide away, an affectionate smile tugging at his lips. Then he pulls you close against him, much closer than propriety allows, and you continue the set.
“How is my dear sire?” they ask, their breath warm against your neck.
You peek over Vicente’s shoulder. The regis sits upon his throne at the edge of the ballroom, his furious gaze on you and Vicente. His fingers have a vice-like grip on the arms of the chair, and his reddened face looks ready to explode.
“He’s turning a lovely shade of maroon,” you chuckle.
Vicente nuzzles further into your neck. “Think we can turn him purple?”
You grip the ponytail at the nape of their neck and tug, just enough force to make them hiss and pull away from your neck. They turn their face to yours, pupils dilated so far that the sliver of blue blends with the white.
“I think we can give it our best try,” you murmur, bringing your lips to theirs.
A reminder that darker fiction has a right to exist and explore themes that people are uncomfortable with. Yes, even if it's romanticized. Yes, even if you personally don't like it.
Authors have always written about things that they don't agree with morally, and I hope to god they always will, despite how shitty people treat them for doing that now.
