All of us can and should be vegan (which is avoiding exploiting other animals “as far as possible and practicable” in our circumstances). Harming someone unnecessarily is abusive and doing so because of who they are is oppressive. We should be against *all* oppression.
i support universal free healthcare for one simple reason: if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness you should quit your job. quitting your job is the correct response to terminal illness. but you can’t do that if your healthcare is tied to your job
listen if somebody knows that they will be dead in a years time, and you are forcing them to continue to come into work, that’s fucked up. terminally ill people should be able to quit their jobs and live their last few months to the fullest. i don’t get how that’s a controversial opinion

kinda fucked up how society teaches that “it’s not fair” is a whiny and childish emotional response to have. what a good way to gloss over the fact that things need to change until they are fair & that distress is a valid emotional response to injustice
You’re telling me that in the socialist utopia of your dreams, it is still perfectly fine to not only exploit animals for their labour, but to treat sentient beings themselves as commodities?
Does the cow not labour to produce her milk? Does the hen not labour for her eggs? Do the bees not labour for their honey? Why shouldn’t they be allowed to benefit from their own labour, instead of their very bodies and what they produce being commodified for profit? In farmed animals we have a captive underclass who are themselves both the product and the means of production, who are legally considered property and exploited for profit which they will not benefit from.
Yet you don’t feel the need to apply any of your existing theories of labour and liberation to the issue of animal exploitation? Can we really create a fair, free, and classless society on the backs of an exploited group who have absolutely no right to the products of their labour, their bodies or even their own lives?

Geological horror. You find a geode and crack it open and the crystal lining its walls is human blood that can't be genetically matched to anyone. You find a human skeleton but every one of the bones is made from rock, a rock that you know can't be whittled into those shapes. You find layers of clay and loam that sport ancient fossils at the top and the still-rotting corpses of modern animals at the bottom.
This reminds me of the blood river in Antarctica. For like a century scientists had no clue why this river looked like, acted like, and felt exactly like blood. Turns out it’s just really high in iron.

A non-vegan’s “love” for animals reminds me of that selfish kind of “love” that often happens between humans too.
It’s when all you care about is what the other person can do for you, how they can make you feel, and you depend on them for your own happiness. You—perhaps subconsciously—believe they exist for you.
It’s the self-centred inability to view others within a context that does not involve you.Â
This is the stuff so many abusive relationships are made of, and it is also the rotten core of the supposed love a speciesist feels for non-human animals.
I see so many picture posts of baby animals with the comment, “I want one!”
“I want to possess this cuteness, because it makes me feel good. I will also eat its mother, because eating bacon also makes me feel good.” “You’re so pretty and you make me laugh. I will continue to abuse you, because it makes me feel better about myself.”
That is not love.
Loving someone means not wanting to possess them. It means loving them despite the possible absence of you in their life.
Love is allowing someone else to exist for themselves.
Very annoying how many people on here have convinced themselves of some deeply antifeminist ideas while also believing themselves to be feminists and twisting the language of feminism into incoherent justifications.
In particular very frustrated with how many people have noted ways in which patriarchy negatively affects some men (legitimate) and then manages to conclude this with the idea that it is the responsibility of women to fix all of it (not so legitimate). Framing more things as the exclusive/primary responsibility of women is not the feminist take you think it is.
The archetypal example of this is, of course, the recognition that due to toxic masculinity, many men do not talk much about their feelings. This is a legitimate observation, and yet it perpetually becomes twisted into "and therefore it is incumbent upon women to do all the emotional labor and be sinks for men's feelings" rather than encouraging men to emotionally support each other. Expecting women to be the gender responsible for emotional labor is not feminism but an already-extant feature of patriarchy.
Worse, this statement that patriarchy can harm men often ends up bleeding into "patriarchy hurts everyone equally" or "patriarchy benefits no one" which are just blatantly untrue. In order to meaningfully critique or fight against patriarchy, it is necessary to acknowledge who benefits from it and how, and conversely who is negatively affected by it and how. Any analysis that frames it as a cartoon villain: evil to everyone by design for no real reason, equally weighing on everyone and benefiting no one; is doomed.
the solution for taking care of "unsightly" homeless people is to house us. that is the only solution. if you can't stand the look of someone living on the sidewalk, you shouldn't stand for them being put into that situation to begin with. housing us is the only answer.
teaching yourself how to deal with mildly annoying inconveniences is imo an essential part of treating the disabled people around you with compassion and no i'm not kidding
sometimes you have to share a public space with someone who has loud verbal tics. sometimes a chronically ill friend will have to cancel plans because of a flare up even if you were really looking forward to hanging out with them. sometimes an autistic person will talk over you or interrupt you because they missed a particular cue. sometimes people who struggle to take care of themselves will smell bad. sometimes people with intellectual disabilities will need you to give them more detailed, patient instructions, even if it seems simple to you. sometimes you will need to give up your seat on the bus for a physically disabled person even if you don't want to move.
accommodating disabled people is not always easy or comfortable; being an ally means doing it anyway.
