Remmick, Ryan Coogler's vampire in Sinners, is written so well. You have a white, Irish vampire from the time of the colonization of Ireland by the english who is trying to deal with his own loss and 'hunger'. He wants to use Sammie. He wants to take away Sammie's music, his tradition and to use it for his own gain.
We have one more white oppressor who presents himself as a saviour. He inflitrates a black community, coming with the promise of... equality, community and freedom from death. But those promises come to fruition in a very specific manner. Remmick is the leader, for all the equality he promises. HE is the one who sets the tune the rest are singing. HE is the one whose pain is felt by every member of this 'community'. Every person that is turned connects to him in a hive-mind of collective memory and experience that HE controls and is able to use to his own convenience. Moreover, this is a collective that does not exclude the KKK-alligned family that was part of the plan to slaughter an entire black community.
Remmick represents a seemingly politically correct, predominantly white globalization. He presents himself as well-intended. He may even BELIEVE that he is. But what he offers is the death of individuality, of culture and tradition.
I do want to touch on one more thing. When black people were stolen from Africa and put on those ships. They stripped us of our culture, our language and our history. A lot of us in present day can’t even say where our ancestors came from exactly, we can’t speak the language, we don’t even know the names of our forefathers.
That music scene was so moving because it highlights that despite all of the terrible atrocities, we are connected. Past, present and future. It’s in our soul, it’s in our very bones. We will always carry each other. It’s spiritual and it’s unbreakable. That power is our birthright.
Smoke and Annie were and look the same age. I know you lot aren't USED to seeing dark skinned Black women as love interests (especially plus sized ones) on screen but seriously, get a fucking grip. There was NOTHING to suggest she was any grown man's mama or sister. That is called bias.
I've been having SUCH a good time in the Sinners tag, reading so much interesting and insightful meta!
So here's my contribution—spoilers ahead.
The thing I can't stop thinking about is the horror *after* Sinners. Like something truly goddamn awful happened in this community and nobody knows!!! Like 50-60 people just DISAPPEARED overnight and everyone else just has to pick up the pieces???
Sammie knows, but he can't tell anyone. They probably know he knows something, but like...... there's just no explanation. No wonder he runs away to Chicago. Yes, blues is his dream but ALSO how could you stay home after that?
Maybe they think the Klan crashed the party and killed everyone? Since the next day someone will find Smoke and all those white Klan corpses there. But WHERE is Stack. Smoke and Stack are always together. And WHERE are the fifty+ other people who were at the party last night! There's absolutely no trace of them. It's mind boggling and mystifying and upsetting.
Grace and Bo never go home to Lisa. Annie will surely be missed by all the people who counted on her, for magic and food and being there. Cornbread doesn't go home to Therise and their baby on the way. Delta Slim was a staple in the community and he's just gone. Pearline and Mary both don't go back to their husbands. And repeat that over and over and over for everyone who was there and there's NO CLUE for where they could have gone.
What a traumatic thing to rip through this community. It's horrible. And I can't stop thinking about it.
one of my favorite things about sinners is how we see elijah using the gun to kill the grand dragon of the kkk while still maintaining a connection to heaven where he sees and hears annie and their baby girl. the rejection of the idea that killing someone like that white supremacist character would lock the doors of heaven for someone like smoke. no. he still belongs there. absolutely he does.
this is so specific but in sinners I really liked how the cotton plantations are depicted. there's so many shots of them driving or walking through cotton fields which just feel infinite and really span into the distance, maybe a single tree in the frame. it's such a small detail but it really conveys the sense unending labour and the scale of exploitation of Black people in that industry in the US, like of course the cotton fields would have seemed/felt endless, especially as you work in them all day... Ryan Coogler i love you
Elijah letting go of being Smoke to be with his family in the afterlife but Elias not being able to move on so he's wearing the $TACK brass knuckles in 1992... Smoke died so Elijah could be free, but Elias died and Stack is chained to this earth forever......
