"I was a bit naive as to how quickly AI could change what we do. Already friends of mine are refusing to sign contracts and losing jobs because they won’t give away the rights to their performance to be manipulated and used again. That’s another threat of AI. Will it put an end to human artistry? Humans always fuck it up, don’t we? I’m fully prepared for our dystopian future now!” — HOLLIDAY GRAINGER
THE CAPTURE 3x01: "Don't Look at the Camera"
The Capture - S03E04 - Kill Switch
"She dwelt in the gardens of Lórien, and among all his people there were none more beautiful than Melian, nor more wise, nor more skilled in songs of enchantment. It is told that the Valar would leave their works, and the birds of Valinor their mirth, that the bells of Valmar were silent and the fountains ceased to flow, when at the mingling of the lights Melian sang in Lórien."
Thingol was the only elf to successfully rizz an Ainu, which is impressive, but I also want to point out that Melian wasn't "just" any Maia, she was literally the IT GIRL of Valinor.
There were probably many other Maiar who had a crush on her, and maybe there was even someone like "her Daeron", who spent many millennia grieving after she left, unable to understand why she would settle for one of the Incarnates instead of choosing someone who was her equal. And when she returned, she seemed like a different person. She couldn't fade from grief the way Luthien did after Beren died the first time, but she was no longer singing, and she probably didn't want to leave the gardens of Lorien until Thingol was released from Mandos.
When that finally happened, the two of them probably became the center of attention for quite a long time. Everyone wanted to finally meet Thingol, and everyone was happy to see Melian leave the gardens and smile again.

… I have no excuses, it’s been a whiiile
Here’s a Maedhros portrait
No but it always kills me how CURUFIN is the one who had Angrist all along and that he did fuck all with it until Beren and Luthien took it from him. The one knife strong enough to pry a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown.
And Celegorm had Huan!! These two Feanorian brothers specifically had all they needed to at least make an attempt at retrieving the Silmarils and it never really occurred them to TRY.
In my opinion, this does not even occur to them - because subterfuge as a means of attack is not an option in the institutional sense for princes accustomed first and foremost to achieving their ends by military & political machinations, by open battle or by rhetoric that takes advantage of the structures of power within which they have lived their entire lives entrenched. What Beren and Lúthien do requires a certain forfeiture of pride - a forfeiture of pride necessitated by the fact that they do not have any feudal systemic power behind them, in fact they are acting against the interests and desires of that power, so they have to come to terms with using means that eschew pride in order to win the freedom to decide their own fate.
No such thing has ever been in question for Celegorm & Curufin, as princes who have always been backed by systemic power or only temporarily disadvantaged yet still construed as within the right in their framework of power; the Exile is a schism, Maedhros' abdication is unprecedented, Nargothrond is seized by rhetoric and populism, Doriath - as later Sirion - are assaulted by means of military power. And what examples has Fëanor given them? That subterfuge and infiltration are the tools of Morgoth (theft; disguise; lie) and the way that Fëanor himself had been wronged (infiltration of the family structure by Indis), not something a king or prince is liable or allowed to use. Fëanor himself utilises rhetoric and takes advantage of the legal framework, and if no other thing will avail, uses military power and force to achieve his objectives, and decries cowardice, where a line can be drawn to assume that direct, open conflict is thus assumed to be the morally correct path to attain what you want. Celegorm and Curufin, the two most likened to Fëanor, exemplify his lack of willingness to treat with anyone considered a traitor to the cause or compromise on their objectives perhaps best of all. To them, guile is both humiliating and morally suspect in this ideological framework; the sons of Fëanor in Beleriand utilise force, organise military operations, send intimidating letters and use political posturing, but nothing akin to guile even such as Fingon uses to rescue Maedhros from Thangorodrim. That brings me to the second reason: guile missions in the Silmarillion require a certain amount of faith and hope in things turning out the right way, and a certain amount of divine providence. Fingon would not have succeeded without prayer just as Lúthien would not have enjoyed the fruits of their success without convincing Mandos. But hope in divine favour is not something that people famously eschewing the authority of the Valar and undertaking a blasphemous oath not once, but twice, would champion; clinging to hope for aid from the same people considered to have betrayed the cause & good of the Eldar is not to be expected. In light of that, relying on goodwill clearly seems like a suicide mission, especially in the aftermath of the Dagor Bragollach which has revealed that all of the military might the Noldor have been amassing is still insufficient to move any closer to their goal. The only possible way forwards is more power, more resources, more bodies. There is no hope to talk of.
So of course it does not occur to them to try; to try is not just humiliating and amoral, but a waste of resources and foolish to boot, inevitably doomed to fail.

The thing that the people who get mad about Nienna defending Melkor and other bad people don't understand is that, being the Lady of Mercy, she is quite literally the public defender archangel. She was created and designed to be able to have empathy for literally everyone in existence, so that no one is ever alone without anyone to speak for them.
And for those who get mad at public defenders and defense attorneys I will also point out that it's absolutely vital for having a state under the rule of law that respects human rights and is not run on the whims and good (or ill) will of those in power that even the worst person imaginable has someone defending them in court.
Similarly, it is vital that someone like Nienna exists. You can probably see now why her close connection to Námo is not a coincidence - he needs her. And why she is counted among the Aratar.
For it is said that even in the Music Nienna took little part, but listened intent to all that she heard. Therefore she was rich in memory, and farsighted, perceiving how the themes should unfold in the Tale of Arda. But she had little mirth, and all her love was mingled with pity, grieving for the harms of the world and for the things that failed of fulfilment. So great was her ruth, it is said, that she could not endure to the end of the Music. Therefore she has not the hope of Manwe. He is more farseeing; but Pity is the heart of Nienna
It's important to note that Nienna's pity and mercy does not come out of ignorance, but out of undestanding. It's a different kind of strength. Of course the idea that she defends Melkor has its roots in a version of the Annals of the Valar in which she, Melkor and Manwe are siblings and Nienna supports Melkor "because of her kinship". But I think it makes sense for her to do so even outside of that familial relationship.
There is a quote by Nienna which does not concern Melkor, but I think it can be used about her stance in many situations:
'In the use of Justice there must be Pity, which is the consideration of the singleness of each that cometh under Justice."
Nienna's mercy alone is at times excessive. She is consumed by it and by her compassion. But the Valar were not created to stand alone. They encompassed different aspects that are all necessary for Eru's great plan to run as smoothly as possible. Nienna's empathy, her grief, her forgiveness, are vital. What would be the alternative? For everything to be left to Mandos' pittiless (with one exception) jurisdiction? The Valar without Nienna would have ended up being more alike to Melkor that they'd ever wish to be.
Melkor shares aspects with all of the Valar. Nessa is one of them, and one of her most well-known talents is dancing. Does that mean Melkor was also a naturally talented dancer???
There are jokes about him seducing Mairon like a bird with elaborate courtship dances, but maybe there's some truth to them...
And as it was often with him, when he said to Luthien that things like dancing are little to his mind he was both telling the truth and lying, because the idea of HER dancing did not interest him at the time, but he would sell his soul for Mairon to be there so that they could dance together.
