Once again thinking about Jax and Ragatha constantly fighting over Pomni and Pomni not even giving a single fuck. They'll be fighting over who would be the better influence on her (grown ass woman btw) and she's just like "I can think for myself guys" and then doesn't do a single thing to further deescalate. Jax talks about their "developing friendship" while making direct eye contact with Ragatha, clearly trying to antagonize her, who then goes through every stage of grief at once and proceeds to fumble in every possible way one could fumble and Pomni just takes a sip of her drink like :/. She is NOT interested in whatever these two have going on, but they won't stop trying to involve her regardless.

celestial bodies have an escape velocity, which is the speed at which an object would have to travel away from the surface of the body to pull out of its gravitational pull. the more massive the body, the higher its escape velocity. thus, black holes are bodies that are so massive that their escape velocity escapes that of the speed of light, meaning not even the speed of light can escape the gravitational pull of that celestial body.
by MASSIVE i do not mean big, i mean having a lot of mass/containing a lot of matter. for things to be massive they are either very big or very dense. if something is very dense, it does not have to be very big to be massive.
the more massive an object, the stronger its gravitational pull. here’s where despicable me comes in: gru SHRANK the fucking MOON. since matter cannot be created or destroyed, all the matter that makes up the moon must be the same mass, just much more condensed so it can take up less space. this means it would be really heavy, first of all, but second, it would be extremely MASSIVE for an object that size, which means it would need to have at least some effect on GRAVITY. like wouldn’t the ocean flood wherever on earth the tiny moon is, because it has the same pull on the oceans as it had before to create the tides, but now it’s way closer to the oceans so wouldn’t they just converge upon it. also what would its escape velocity even be?? currently it’s 2.38 km/s and earths is like ~11km/s wait actually would the earth be like, okay????? what would happen to the fucking earth dude?? guys i’m scared
ok there is an equation to calculate what size an object’s mass would have to be condensed to for it to be inescapable. earth would have to be shrunk to just under a centimeter which means the size gru shrinks the moon to would not create a dark star because the moon is less massive than earth and was shrunk to the size of like a softball. but i’m not good enough at math to find out what its escape velocity would be at that size. @aura1817 if you feel like doing some math here is the equation:
Okay I'm here with some answers and some further questions (where any good science should end).
First, the equation in the photo for the Schwarzschild Radius (the radius at which a given mass forms a black hole): if the moon were shrunk to about 0.1mm, around the width of a human hair, it would form a black hole.
Second, escape velocity. I'm going with the general assumption that he shrunk the moon to the size of a standard tournament softball. I have neither the time nor skill to pixel-measure the actual real-world size he shrunk the moon to. With this assumption, the escape velocity would be over 51 million km/hr. You mentioned the Earth's escape velocity being around 2.38 km/s; this equates to around 14 thousand km/s for the softball moon.
The good news is, though, that this wouldn't cause a catastrophic event if the shrinking conserves mass. Gravitational forces are, to my understanding, entirely dependent on mass, not density. As long as the moon stays at the same mass, it wouldn't change the tidal forces on the Earth. I imagine, though, that the lack of moonlight at night would have some serious effects on ecosystems and nocturnal animals. Also, I would miss her :(
Bringing the moon down to Earth for him to actually hold it is a totally different story. I do not have the high-level astrophysical understanding to figure out what would happen if an object that dense and small came down through our atmosphere. It would be so dense and rigid that I don't think it would break up in the atmosphere, and thus it would effectively be like the Earth was getting shot because of how small and energetic the object would be. I don't know what would happen, but I don't think we'd like it, to say the least. I'm sure someone out there with better physics chops than me could determine what a softball-moon impact would look like.
Take this last paragraph of pontificating with a grain of salt; I'm a chemist, not a physicist lol. If you want to see my process I'm including my notes here.
THANK YOU SO BAD I AM FUCKIGN GAGGED

it’s small joys saturday y’all let’s get it
It's okay if joy and grief keep visiting on the same day.
This is the image that Israel is trying to hide from the world. This is Gaza. This is the reality of 90 percent of the Gaza Strip that has been subjected to genocide.
The explosives dropped on the people of the Gaza Strip are equivalent to 20 nuclear bombs like those dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Does anyone still doubt that Israel committed and continues to commit genocide and ethnic cleansing against us here in the Gaza Strip?
We have been through so much, and we are still alive thanks to your help and donations. Without them, we would have perished long ago. Iman is a child who needs care; she has already suffered enough during the first three of her eight years. Please don't hesitate to donate now. Please donate now.
