This idea of "meeting a trans girl where she's at", of "never pushing her" kills girls, by the way. Ask me how I fucking know.

There is a horrible pressure put on trans girls to be normal, to not ask for things, to not do anything, to not exist. Without that pressure, that push forward, the girl dies.

When a girl tell you she is a girl, you cannot stop at milquetoast acceptance. You cannot stop at "I'll always support you no matter what" You need to be here for her, to help her, by making a safe environnement, and by actively helping her discover herself. When you stand here to "leave her space", you are about as helpful as a rock.

Too many girls need actual support. Not a one tile acknowledgement and a subject never again brought up. If she is expected, at every turn, to come forward, to make every step alone, that is a terrifying pressure you put on her, in the name of giving her space. You need to be here for her. actively.

Most new girls needs a push. If they don't get that, they won't ask for anything.

I think too often people forget that “they” is as much a pronoun as any of the others, and it isn’t as neutral as you want it to be.

I accept it as a useful default (and I use it that way myself), but once a person has told you their preferences, you GOTTA stop using they/them if it’s not on the list. please. this isn’t me trying to make anyone feel bad but it’s at a point where I’m misgendered more in “inclusive” spaces than literally anywhere else

The thing is, there was a point where they was supposed to be a true neutral when you don't want to gender someone, and it could be used, not only when you don't know what people's pronouns are, but also when whether that person was a man, woman or other didn't matter to the subject. It could replace any pronouns.

That was the whole point of "they", and one of the reasons a lot of people chose it as their pronoun: because these people considered that who they are mattered more then what they are. Hence the neutral pronoun.

Sorry, as a trans woman I’m really bothered by claims like this — for as long as I have been trans, people have intentionally used “they/them” as an excuse to not call me “she/her”. it was one of my earliest experiences being trans and has definitely been one of the most frequent.

It’s really frustrating for people to keep lining up and say “well they/them was always supposed to be used on everybody until some people started using it maliciously” because it very much feels like the undercurrent to that claim is “I wish I could be one of the people who misgenders you using they/them pronouns, but unfortunately, you’ll think I’m doing it in a bad way and not a woke way”

As it turns out, there is no quick and easily solution to “what pronouns do I refer to this person with?” — for as long as “they” has been an option, there have been cis people weaponising it to refuse trans women our pronouns. I promise you. There was no mystical magical time when it was okay to misgender trans women and jsut only now do we just have a stick up our asses about it: use people’s actual pronouns instead of trying to find a one-size-fits-all solution where you don’t have to pretend to care.

And that’s what it almost always is: when cis people make this huge “well I use they/them on everybody because it’s gender neutral so THERE” stink, they are essentially saying, “I can’t be bothered to learn trans people’s pronouns so I’m just gonna say they and then blame you when you don’t like that”

“They” has never been a totally, politically neutral pronoun. There is no easy solution to not misgendering people other than actually giving a fuck about referring to them the way they want to be.
