I have heard of black people warning their kids that the race of a police officer is cop and you should not expect solidarity from them. The same applies to other types of minorities.

The sexuality of a police officer is cop.

The gender of a police officer is cop.

When you become the enforcer and protector of capital, you are making the deal to be slightly favored by the system over others like you, in exchange for being its servant. Your solidarity is with the system that you serve, even if it hates you.

If you want solidarity with those the system hates, you cannot be the system's servant and defender.

Cops open doors for me now, wink, or say something sweet. However. I remember how the first two years of transition they'd stare, or turn and follow me a block, or ask what business I had to be here. Put a hand on their hip, right next to their gun. If a friend tells me "good cop" stories, I can honestly tell them I know, I experience that too, but let me tell you how they are when you're less pretty. And the way they treat my other friends. And how quickly that could happen to you or your kids or other important people in your life.

Same day I had a teen message me and say “hey I’m really frustrated with how you ran rehearsal today” and I said “Yeah, I understand where you’re coming from, I agree that I handled X and Y poorly. I’m glad you felt like you could bring it up,” and Teen said “Thank you for responding to me and listening. I understand where you’re coming from too.”

Stuff that’s hard to do but worth it:

Taking time to validate kids’ feelings, even if they’re “silly”

Making a safe space for kids to express themselves, even if they’re expressing criticism

Being open to having difficult conversations with kids, even when it’s uncomfortable for one or both of you

Call me whatever names you wish, but I think this is a much better (and healthier) attitude than “anyone under 18 should never be allowed to see any sexual imagery ever”

(For reference: this was at the Tom of Finland exhibition, containing actual, queer, kinky af pornography. There were definitely some young people there, perhaps in their late teens. There was even a parent with their baby who was probably too young to understand anything at all. And guess what, all those people are probably going to be fine.)
