Dogma (1999)
helicopters are bugs
hard exterior
two or more rapidly-moving "wings"
large eyes
various adaptations to water, carrying loads, etc.
bright colourations indicating danger to potential predators
can hover in one place
full of clear fluid that is needed for it to function
suboptimal to have one land in your drink
I read this in a novel, pretty sure it was So You Want to Be a Wizard.
now I need to go re-read that. I think I gave my copy to my niece though.
Have to say that this early Harcourt paperback cover by David Bowers goes fairly hard on that image... 😅
I just want to point out that the Malagasy language word for a helicopter is angindimbỳ, i.e. “dragonfly of metal”.
Contrast with airplanes, vorombỳ, “bird of metal”.

yeah okay ill reblog that
I know i've said it before, but if you are concerned it could be real and not a scam, the best way to avoid getting scammed is to return contact separately.
Here's how that works:
say you get a text from your internet provider, let's say it's Comcast (whom i hate). So you have this text that says it's from Comcast about your bill with a contact number and a clickable link -- could be real, could be a scam.
Don't touch anything about this text. Open a web browser and look up the customer service number for Comcast. Or get the number from the bill they send you. However you do it, get the contact info for Comcast from a trusted source, like an official phone directory or the Comcast website itself.
Get in touch with them using that information.
So. Let's run the example both ways it could go.
If it IS a scam: you reach out to Comcast and tell them you were contacted about a problem with your bill, they look you up in their customer database, and they tell you there is no problem with your bill.
If it's NOT a scam, you do the same thing, they look you up, and they explain the problem. In this case, neither Comcast nor the employees involved give a single shit whether or not you clicked the link in the text vs. going through their official website.
This works the same for the your bank, the IRS, Amazon, political causes, charities, everything.
By handling any questionable incoming calls to action this way, you significantly protect yourself from scams and malware and shit
You can do this with phone calls too!!! If a company calls you asking for some info or about a problem with you card/account/whatever you can ask them for a reference number for your case and call back later. You don't have to give a reason but if you feel awkward you can just say you have a meeting in 2 minutes but can call back another time to deal with it.
If it's not scam they'll be like sure, here's the reference number. Then you follow the instructions above, call the separate number you find yourself on a reputable website and give that person the reference number. And they'll help you resolve the issue.
Don't let scammers scare you over the phone into giving them sensitive information!!!!
great addition ^^^
and out of the darkness - you you you you you
"Just because I'm right, doesn't mean I'm being helpful" is a vastly underrated thought process that I strongly encourage others to get comfortable with
Hey op thanks for fundamentally rearranging my molecules in some helpful way this fine evening

ive irreparably fucked up this doge meme. i’m a disgrace.
The rats weren’t carrying the plague, it was the fleas on the rats.
I guess busses dont carry people since they just carry seats and the seats have people, then?
If an armed militia travels by bus and exits the bus to kill people, you don’t say those people were killed by the bus.
doge’s pet rat is fucking sick and you are arguing about busses? fucking busses?
today's bug thing is this Very Hungry Caterpillar balloon decoration!
my stance on the trans athlete debate is always and forever going to be that sports should be completely desegregated because humans have one of the smallest levels of sexual dimorphism in the animal kingdom and the disparity we see between male and female performance is entirely caused by social factors rather than anything biological. “should trans women compete against cis women” i think cis men and cis women could compete fairly but that’s apparently a little too spicy for people to wrap their minds around bc they’ve been told their whole lives women are biologically inferior & never thought to question that. or wonder if it’s maybe a self fulfilling prophecy of some kind. are women biologically inferior or do they appear so because patriarchy demands that of us?
Two of Us
I went to watch project hail mary again a couple days ago, this time in imax and everything. I don't think i can put into words how much i love this movie it's just so... so perfect. so heartwarming and heartwrenching. so perfectly tied together. there isn't anything at all i could remotely critique (other than it not being longer auuughghh).
The dedication of the crew to practical effects, the performances of all the actors, the visuals and color grading (holy shit a space movie with colors??? and not color graded to be completely grey and dark?? unheard of. its masterful) the soundtrack is amazing and deeply unique, i have not been able to stop listening on repeat. It's just so different from every other movie soundtrack I've heard, and each song and theme are so clear and so well made that you can clearly picture what's happening on screen as you listen. The choir is just so good.... It kind of reminds me of outer wilds' music? They are both vastly different soundtracks, but there's a kindred warmth between both of them. I would also compare it (in a very biased way) to the soundtrack from in other waters, by amos rody. Again, vastly different, but it has that warmth to it as well. And I think they all ring similarly because they feel both incredibly familiar, and a little alien to listen to.
I've seen interviews and behind the scenes detailing the process. This movie was made by such a lovingly dedicated crew, and it truly shows. everyone loved working on it and everyone's little banter that ended up making it into the movie just makes it feel so much more alive. it IS alive.
And the message is just so amazing too. Communication and and friendship and teamwork despite a universe of barriers, despite all the odds against you in such a situation. Fighting for what you love despite it being a practically zero chance of success, just because you believe in it, because it's the right thing to do.
I know I've already made a post on this before but I can't help it i truly need to gush about this movie it goes above and beyond expectations and delivers such a complete, incredible experience.
Movies can be really good!! it doesnt all need to be cgi slop!! it doesnt need to stick to one tone, it can be funny AND heartwrenching!!! they are not mutually exclusive!! I think that's part of why i like it so much too, so many movies, books, and other media starts out as funny with banter etc and then loses that in favor of dire situations and a more permeating seriousness so if the banter is what had you hooked it loses you. And yet this movie is able to flip flop between both things without ever losing either of them, and handling them both beautifully.
If you're still on the fence about watching this movie i really urge you to go and give it a watch, and support it in theaters rather than pirate it if you can. Not only is the experience of seeing it in the big screen amazing but the support for it really means something, I think.
I hope that the immense outpouring of support for this movie from everyone actually makes a difference in the movie ecosystem. We really need to start being more vocal about movies being made properly instead of rushed and put together badly just to have a quarterly release or whatever.
But yeah genuinely, what a good movie. It literally could not possibly be better.
