maybe this is a cancelable opinion but i think the statements “hEDS awareness is rising which is leading to more people being diagnosed and receiving the treatment they need” and “the increased awareness of hEDS is leading to faulty self diagnoses that can be very dangerous” can and should coexist

just bc you’ve seen tiktoks and looked at the symptom lists online doesn’t necessarily mean you have hEDS. A lot of conditions can have the symptoms of hEDS and it’s really important that you go to a doctor and actually get tested and rule out other conditions.

I do think hEDS is not as rare as previously believed but i am also weary of the self diagnosis rates i’ve been seeing online.

sometimes when people call someone talking about their personal experiences with bigotry a "discourse shark fin" it pisses me off because it just shows they aren't paying attention. if you think a wheelchair user talking about being pushed without consent is a "discourse shark fin" it just tells me you've never talked to a wheelchair user. if you talked to wheelchair users you would know this isn't "discourse" but real world bigotry we face all the time- you're just privileged enough to be able to ignore it and brush it off as "discourse."

I dont care if 9/10 of the people who use the wheelchair ramp arent actually in wheelchairs. As long as the 1 person who needs it has access to it.

I dont care if 9/10 people who use the automatic push button on the library door can actually push the door open themselves. As long as the 1 person who the door is too heavy for gets to use it.

I dont care if 9/10 people who buy the can tab opener, or the little guitar clamp that holds the chords for you, or the hand grip that helps you hold chop sticks, don't need any of it and just get it to "be lazy". As long as the one disabled person who needs it gets access to it.

I do not care. Oh my GOD I do not care. As long as there's a disabled person on this planet who the accessibility device will benefit, the accessibility device is necessary.

Also, if you're so worried about people being "lazy" by using accessibility devices, MORE worried than you are about disabled (visibly or not) people not having access to them, you have unchecked ableism you need to work through.

Anti homeless architecture is also often anti-disabled architecture. And it doesn't help that those demographics also overlap quite a bit because medical bills are insane. Abelism is litteraly fucking everywhere when you look for, or when you have no choice but to notice it as a disabled person.

For folks who don’t know 504 is the U.S.A’s law that requires institutions to make accommodations so disabled people can live in their community instead of institutions. Every where from the Walmart, the bus stop, and schools. Currently multiple states are suing the federal government to get rid of this protection. Why are they doing this you ask? Well a student in Texas was looking to receive accommodations at their school for the gender affirming care. The state decide the risk of trans people having medical accommodations was just too much to bear and so we should just keep all disabled people inside again just to be safe.

but you need to start speaking before then to keep getting vocational rehabilitation.

psychiatry has a six month wait list for medication maintenance.

but you have a 24 hour window to call for an emergency refill on your meds, or else you get withdrawals.

you are asked why you took your biweekly meds one day too late.

your prescription for them takes a week to refill from when you contact them for a refill.

your SSI application will take over 1,000 days.

you can't apply for rental assistance until you get an eviction notice.

Had a conversation a few nights ago with a trans friend were she explained her experience with hrt and what each medication she took was when I asked:

Me: what's (abbreviated hormone she mentioned)

Her: it's a hormone blocker (little more info that included blocking t specifically so she could work on e) (something her doctor said she had to stop cuz it was causing her problems along with other meds she was taking)

Me: ooh neat, I've thought about going on hormone blockers first, of course I'd be on a very differnet one, but-

Her: oh no you'd just go straight to being on t

Me, who didnt get a chance to say I'm intersex and need to do more research on what might effect my body and how before I finally do start hormones with confidence: uH OKAY COOL 😬
