A literal bat!Danny, based off a pied bat art prompt by @artistica18! (He's just a lil guy and won't bite your fingers off, promise!)
Also, here's a bonus Timothy (as Jimothy)
AKA "Ghosts feed on emotions. The stronger, the better. Danny quickly realizes this also applies to pain. He becomes a nurse at Dr. Leslie Thompkins' clinic. Enter: the Wayne Family Dilemma." DPxDC prompt idea!
Okay, so, Danny hadn't really intended to work at Dr. Leslie Thompkins' free clinic as a nurse. He even applied for the job; he was helping somebody else who'd gotten mugged get to the free clinic and Dr. Thompkins stopped him, asked, "You're a nurse?" And he was hired. It turns out, nobody wanted to work for Dr. Thompkins because it was a crime-ridden hotspot: Crime Alley.
Danny doesn't even really realize what's happening until a patient with a GSW comes into clinic, yelling and bloody, and Danny's nitrile touch calms him enough that he doesn't even need morphine. A haphazard surgery later and Danny's fully satisfied - he doesn't even need to eat dinner because he feels like he's two minutes away from a food coma.
That's where the rumor starts. The free clinic has good drugs. Not fentanyl, oxycodone, dilaudid, or ketamine. Something better that has no side effects and totally erases every pain - as little as a sore throat to chronic pain that doctors have said there's no cure for. It becomes so well known that Dr. Thompkins' clinic is a huge target and a certain batfamily has to stake out the place to dissuade criminals.
Enter: Dick Grayson, former BPD officer with chronic leg pain after being shot in the leg. Jason "Totally Not A Crime Lord" Todd whose extensive burns affect the right side of his body. Barbara Gordon, Gotham librarian whose spinal injury causes phantom pain.
It becomes apparent that there's something amiss when Timothy Drake-Wayne comes to clinic. Wayne Enterprise CEO and multi-millionaire, who can absolutely afford at least five ambulance rides and a lengthy inpatient stay at a five-star private hospital. Dr. Thompkins catches Danny while he's trying to hide in the staff room, snatching him by the collar and dragging him out to meet him. ("Why do I have to talk to him?!?" "Danny, I can't afford to entertain some rich kid when there is actual work to be done. Just give him what he wants and take his money." "Dr. Thompkins?!")
Danny awkwardly gestures for Mr. Drake-Wayne to sit on one of the crinkly paper seats, pulling the worn-out curtain closed despite there being no other patients in clinic.
"So... What can I help you with, Mr. Drake-Wayne?" Danny asks.
"Just Tim, please," The older man says and smiles in that I'm-so-rich-I-can-afford-dental-insurance way. Sparkly straight, white teeth and all.
"Uh...huh.. Okay. What can I help you with, Tim?"
Tim leans forward, eyes sharp despite his suave persona. He says, "I lost my spleen a couple years ago - a ski retreat gone wrong. Anyways, I still have some residual pain. I heard this is the place to go. I'm sure you already know, but I have a lot of money. Having the backing of a Wayne, especially one who's also a Drake, would be a great... investment."
Danny gapes at him. Incredulously, he asks, "Sir, are you bribing me for drugs?"
Tim shrugs, a self-satisfied half-smile on his face. "I don't know. Is it working?"
((And... well... Danny could really use the money.))
When Danny left the vigilante life to become a paramedic in Gotham he didn't think he'd ever step back into that scene. Much less in this way, because now Danny has Robin riding along with him in the ambulance every shift he's on.Ā
He didn't think Robin would even remember him after he had helped the kid take care of a hurt and sick kitten at the end of his shift. How wrong he was though because the next night Robin was suddenly in the ambulance saying that he would be shadowing Danny from this point forward. Danny's coworkers were also no help in getting the kid to not do this.Ā
Robin called this an intern opportunity to learn more about medicine and how to treat people. Danny called it a HIPPA violation. What he thought doesn't seem to matter though as everyone is always just excited to talk to the kid. He ultimately decides to just let it go and be the unwilling mentor to the young vigilante.Ā
It really isn't until Danny is being cornered after one of his shifts by Batman demanding to know what he's doing to Robin that he wished he had fought harder to convince Robin to not ride along.Ā
TIL Ray Bradbury first titled Fahrenheit 451 āThe Firemanā, then called a local fire station to ask what temperature it would take to actually ignite books. The responding firemen placed him on hold and burnt a book, then reported that the heat required was āFahrenheit 451ā³.
My dad used to design kitchens at Loweās and one day he got a dude from one of the national labs looking to buy a countertop. Dad sent him home with a sample of a quartz-composite countertop to make sure the color will look good with his existing cabinets. The dude asks my dad what the composition of the countertop is and whether itāll melt if he puts a pot on it (since itās a composite and not pure stone) and Dad gives him some rough numbers and reassures him that it wonāt melt if he puts a hot pan on the counter. The dude comes back with week later without the sample. The dude gives dad a detailed list of the countertops composition, to the nearest hundredth of a percentile, and the exact temperature it melts at, because he took it to his lab and melted it down.
tldr, itās not just firefighters.
Imagine giving someone a sample of the granite you use to make countertops and they come back a few days later just to tell you they fucking dematerialized it
Ok, but this is just, like, what people do if they have access to equipment. We just⦠put shit in it. Just to see. At this point, Iāll try and hit just about anything with an arc, just to see. Iāll sand and polish anything youāll let me, if Iām bored enough. If I had a machine that could melt something down and tell me exactly what was in it? Iād be just waiting for parts of my world to become ātrashā so I could de-materialize it and turn it into knowledge of what it was.
Danny, after a close call with identities and the league: we have to tell them at some point, maybe they'll understand. . .
Billy holding Danny by the shoulders, trying to literally shake sense into him: Danny. We are two black-haired, blue-eyed, vigillante teenagers. I'm homeless and your parents are actively hunting you. My name is literally Batson. This is no longer just about age. Unless you want to become a rich Gotham kid, you better lie like your life depends on it!
