I forgot to include this in my 3rd year language anniversary (more yao but thanks for reading)

These are my language signing and pronunciation exercises. I practice these drills monthly and each day has a different practice.

These are different, these are like in progress of completion challenges. Once I finish the challenges they are changed into the first category picture (the first photo). Until then I do not practice these and focus on completing the next part of the challenges and practice the monthly.

These are tasks i have connected to the second photo of the post. The tasks are a mix of unfinished to new challenge ideas to practice. I complete 1 task per day not all because that would lead me to a quicker burnout.

I am pretty proud of how far I've come and of course with the Grace of God being by my side. This journey has been interestingly rough and he's been motivating me to keep going and how there's a purpose to this. Though funny enough I'm a bit lazy today. I completed a new task but doing a drill I'm like eh. Lol

Allow me to introduce you all that has inspired me with language and cultural studies:

My parents

My mom is the more relaxed side with a few interest in traditions. She loves hearing about the different festivals and has been a big supporter of me learning another language. So much so she puts me in the spotlight whenever to speak another language. She has been wanting me to go out and meet with many people from all over the world. I also have been wanting this so I can bring her along the ride.

My dad is more into the serious aspects of culture with the deeper and darker history. He also has been putting me into the spotlight whenever someone talks about culture and languages. Another supporter of my journey and I hope to be able to explore and come back to him on what I've learned from this world.

I kid you not, this is what sparked my interest because I was heavily into mythology and folklore. I love how passionate Evelyn was and yeah some actions she should not done was questionable. But her abilities to be into Egypt hieroglyphics and learn about the history. Also SHE IS (or was?) A LIBRARIAN LIKE I WANT THAT TOO FOR MYSELF!!!!! This movie had me look up different hieroglyphics to translate and understand. All of this was before I got into Highschool to then study college Japanese in dual enrollment.

So I wanted to say I LOVE THIS CARTOON 💕

I remember back in middle school when I did have a friend whom I shared often with common interests. (I miss you friend and hope you're doing well ❤️‍🩹) I spend most of my highschool years trying to decipher Irken language. Me and my past but forever classmate friend wanted to communicate with each other through this. I guess that's how I gotten in Japanese and adapted to love Chinese and added Korean?

Languages 3 Year Anniversary

So um hi! Fun Facts

My name is Crystal, 25 years old soon to be 26 this year in a few months.

I love learning different cultures and languages, it's what helped me get by in life

I am a community college student trying to major in both education and linguistics.

Love listening to music and have a wide variety of music because it depends on my mood.

Often play videogames; my favorite has been Fall Guys, Fortnite, Dave the Diver, Asphalt 9 Legends, Animal Crossing New Horizons and Splatoon

Oh I love doing photography and hope to get one of those fancy cameras 📸

Also enjoy a good read and puzzle

I want to get into the hobbies of creating / playing music, and crochet 🧶

I'm not a big anime and manga fan but I'm a bit cultured on what's what. My favorite anime is Demon Slayer, Black Butler and Attack on Titans.

My favorite manga is Pumpkin Night (personal reasons)

I used to play sports for fun and still have been busy....... (Sports I play: volleyball, soccer, tennis, and table tennis)

I am a sword collector (Japanese to be specific) I own around 11 (???) I originally wanted a bow and arrow (still do)

Favorite season may be Fall because of birthday reasons and just the vibe of the spoopy season is awesome

I LOVE CONSUMING TEA 🍵 and have a sweet tooth 😋

I am learning American Sign Language, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Tagalog

I may have depression or something of the sort but I do have pains!

I'm clumsy as hell unfortunately

The type of movies I'm into are usually comedy, animated, some horror and thriller, and action. Maybe some drama as well I don't know

(Pt 2) What got me into these languages?

1. Japanese

Not sure if I wanted to be challenged with school education or was just bored. Just remembered me being curious as to why this language was deemed one of the hardest languages to learn. Along with finding random fascination with Japanese game shows and prank videos on the Internet. Never considered this language to be hard but more enjoyable and shockingly easy, maybe? 🤷🏾‍♀️

2. Chinese (Mandarin)

Not gonna lie, I never thought I would be studying this language. Because when I was studying Japanese, some of the people my mom would be talking to would loudly express how Chinese was better than Japanese. That I need to study this language instead of wasting time on Japanese. Another is that I heard this language was harder than Japanese and for some reason I took that and ran with it. Ironic. 😼 Anyway, I ended up studying a major that required 2 foreign languages and decided on Chinese (to be honest the college only offered Japanese and Chinese for East Asia language). I love every minute of it and thanks to Japanese Kanji I was able to recognize a lot more Chinese Characters and vice versa. 3. French

I finally gotten a chance to learn this language all because a dear family member moved abroad to Senegal. They told me French was one of the spoken languages and I took it as an opportunity to connect more with them and learn another language on the side. Because new environments and languages can be overwhelming (things changed for them) but I never stopped. Love French music (honestly any song in any language) but this lives rent free. (I hope it works; song is La Vie En Rose by Édith Piaf) Another song I love is Stromae - Tous Les Memes.

4. Spanish

I felt so bad not doing well in Spanish class during highschool because this language holds as much gems as many others. Also I have seen my mom wanting to learn this language due to unfortunate things with some people. I saw how she tried but her motivation needs some extra boost, so I'm secretly learning so in case she needs extra help after the tutor. Maybe I can try and come in to support her and even communicate with her so she will keep up with it more. We also thought how cool it was to have others curious as we speak Spanish in public.

5. Korean

From people asking me to translate something in Korean because I studied Chinese / Japanese. To me seeing other melanated girls learn Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Then my brain said "hey we can do that too!" So here I am learning Korean and also my mom asked me to translate something in Korean. When I told her I don't know any so I can't, her response, "Aren't you supposed to be into languages and cultures? Get to it because you see me curious." So I have to be on my game to learn Korean so when someone mistakes me learning Japanese/ Chinese to understanding Korean. Learning Korean will help me actually translate Korean while educating them on how Korean is not Japanese or Chinese. Plus I've heard Korean takes a bit of influence from both such as grammar from Japanese and the building of characters from Chinese. Quite interesting honestly.

6. Tagalog

Unfortunately the reason I started to learn this language is because of how toxic it is where I volunteer. Most of the coworkers gossip either in English (rarely and usually light as it's mostly chat) Spanish (so-so, usually chat) or Tagalog (A LOT). (Before the thought of paranoia can come up) The workers and boss makes it very obvious and uncomfortable with their gossiping. Along with the casual chat in Tagalog is pretty much different than the gossiping. However, I did end up finding the language and brief talk of the Filipino culture interesting. Also want to clarify not all of the Filipino coworkers gossip as some are chill. Back to the focus of the languages, the way Spanish comes mix and mingle along with a few others I thought was pretty interesting. I'm definitely curious and hope to stay strong in studying. I also heard it's a hard language but honestly it's hard because the resources for Tagalog seems so few 💔

7. American Sign Language

Trauma from 4 years ago when I worked as a host at a restaurant. I had customers who were deaf and even though they offered a way of communicating through phone text. I felt icky about myself, like Google translating icky (no shame if you use it in an emergency). I wanted to communicate better, wanted to give them the best service I can try to give. Maybe it's guilt from the inner self rather than from them. Learning this language has sort of gave me a boost of happiness because my mom also joined me in learning. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO LEARN IN COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY IN MIND. PLEASE LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE!!! I AM SO SERIOUS BECAUSE IT'S SO REWARDING AND EDUCATIONAL. {Also I hope y'all get a passionate teacher to help with this. } Me and my mom have been enjoying our time communicating through ASL in public and at home.

(I don't know if I'll be able to volunteer as much this week. Sort of hope I can do half of this week if possible. Because there's this spoopy con I want to go to. All while I want to rest up and hopefully heal. (Oh yeah I hurt my ankle badly and the resting process is semi slow and fast. Still as I rest I can get some language stuff done with. Last week I got some language study done but mostly slept. Also I could take care of a few other things. Just gotta prevent procrastination.) )

there is no amount of language learning that is useless. I think it obviously scales up in wonderfulness as you learn more, but even just being at the point where you can recognize what language is being spoken or written is still a more useful thing than not knowing that. it is lovely to say hi to people in their language! any attempt to learn is important. you don't get fluent overnight. and you don't have to get fluent overnight. more knowledge is better than none. it isn't just all or nothing.

My Study Update Progress (this week)

I finished all of the 2nd chapter for Spanish grammar

I started studying the 2nd chapter to Korean grammar

Learned the stroke order 央 and 田 for my Chinese studies.

Also learned the stroke order ㄸ for my Korean studies.

I am still going over the Korean vocabulary from the introduction chapter.

If you’re learning a language seriously with the intention of using it long term and making it a part of your life you need to let go of the idea that it’s something you can just get over with and rip off like a band aid. Anyone that tells you that you can be fluent in three months or less is probably trying to sell you something.

This is gonna be a several months or years long project. And you’re not stupid. You’ll feel stupid. A lot. But you’re not stupid.
