why is it that when im reading fanfic i feel like i have a fairly good metric for if something is characterized accurately but when im trying to write suddenly its like ive never seen this character in my life. would he say that. would he fucking say that. suddenly i have no idea

i think often about starkovitch being penpals before the walk. who never actually met one another but fell in love regardless through their letters, pictures, and gifts secretly sent across states. starko who sent goodbye letters that would never be read after being chosen for the walk. who recognized each other at the starting line, their chests filling up with a mix of horror and delight. starko who press as much time together as they can into the walk before they can't possibly go any farther. who stop walking at the same time, hands clasped, turning to take the other in one last time before their countdown runs out.

starko who knew each other before the walk and who decide to die together. them going into it knowing they're gonna die, but making the choice to stick it out and be together in their last moments is so important to me. they decide to stop when they see how close ray and pete have gotten. maybe its a bit selfish of them, but the thought of having to make the decision of who will die and who will win tore them up inside, and they knew they'd never be able to make the choice.

one must also consider them getting excited when pete shares what his wish would be. them letting themselves think that its possible... i also like to think of what their wishes might be, if they even allowed themselves that. i feel like before, their wishes would've been to be allowed to marry and live peacefully away from it all, but then they saw one another at the starting line and realized they'd never get the life they so desperately wanted

right. so. my personal hc is

stebbins's mom's parents moved from belarus to the deep, appalacian parts of north carolina when stebbins's mom was just a baby. his mom grew up in north carolina and developed the thick appalachian accent that exists in wnc, but she also speaks her native tongue fluently. she moved to texas for college where she met strbbins's dad. his dad was willing to go back to nc with his mom after she got pregnant with stebbins, but by the time stebbins was 5, he dragged both his wife and kid back to texas. stebbins speaks his mother's native tongue, has all of her mannerisms, says certain words certain ways that are rooted in the wnc accent, and says certain phrases that are only heard deep in the nc appalacias nowadays. HOWEVER. his accent is largely texan in nature, and quite thick as well.

now. barko's mom is from the florida/georgia area with her family spread all throughout. she very much carries that thick, distinct accent that exists close to the border line of those two states. barko's dad is from tennessee, and his parents met at a very large rodeo happening in texas that they both happened to attend. obviously shit happens, and they end up raising barko in florida. he has his mom's accent almost exactly and is VERY MUCH a florida boy, but he still has some tennessee mountain habits and loves that part of his heritage deeply, despite the hatred he has for his father. his meemaw's from tennessee, so it cant be all that bad, right? abd yes gary does eventually end up moving to tennessee to live with meemaw after she finds out what a huge piece of shit her son has been, but that isnt until gary's 16.

this is #my personal hc for starko and i have thought so much abt this. i couod very well go deeper into it simply bc of hos many thoughts i have, but! i have yammered enough.
