In my opinion Harlan went about the "content stealing" thing horribly. If you don't know 2 people were banned from discord and Patreon for making a discord server where they would put Patreon content in there. Harlan then proceeded to compare them to ai stealing artists work, which that is just a bit weird imo because there's a difference between stealing content and claiming it as your own and giving people content that was originally behind a paywall but that's not what I'm really focused on.

What I don't agree with is that Harlan proceeded to link the 2 people's accounts who made the server and publicly shamed them. He could have maybe just said that someone had done something like that and told people not to do stuff like that but in my opinion it was genuinely the wrong thing for him to do to link their account in his post and give them easy access to their accounts to possibly harass them.

Yes I get it, they did something wrong, but to publicly shame them and put an entire community against them for it is ALSO wrong.

There's a detail that got only mentioned a bit in this post that honestly got my blood boiling in all this.

I went to check the invictus server to see what the ruckus was for myself (I found out about this because this mess was directly mailed to all Patreon members, so, you know, Harlan mailed directly the names of the culprits to all his patreons, a super normal thing to do), and the thing is Harlan's "comparison" to AI was so vague and so not looking like just a comparison at all, that several people went 'omg they are feeding malev to AI'. People with a level head and outside of the Invictus server also didn't understand wtf had happened with Ai there. It was worded in a way that definitely made it sound like AI had been involved in the whole mess.

A bit later, someone went 'wait, what's the actual connection bewteen AI stealing art and the ppl banned?' First Jo answered it was because the ppl banned had also been stealing content from artists (cue more server outrage), but then a while later had to come and say, ah, no, actually, it was just an anaolgy cause AI is also stealing, no AI was involved at all in any of this.

Like, great, it's so cool that less than a month ago Harlan literally hired an artist from fiver who did at least some of his recent merch with AI (Larson Mining Company art I'm looking at you), got asked about that, went "they said they didn't" and then proceeded to refuse to answer who the artist was, only to then turn around and use that exact concept to stoke the anger of his entire public server, just because.

Like, that's just great, that's really cool of him, this is all excellent behaviour.

yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.

i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.
