The Soulless Automaton.

Most likely originally from sometime in the 1900s-1920s range.

They were thrown through a strange portal into a somewhat alien wilderness- almost familiar, but the laws of physics treated more as guidelines, with strange mashups of known creatures at every corner.

Having (deliberately) lost the majority of their previous memories, they adapted to this new life remarkably well for a robot in the wilderness with no technology; conveniently, their functions are analogous to that of a human.

"No technology" referring, of course, to the initial state of hunter-gathering. As a genius tinkerer and robotics engineer, they remedied that about as quickly as they could find the metals they needed.

They hold a disdain for all the majority of organic life. Don't take it personally!

Remembering their past life as a human induces dissociation and dysphoria. They try to avoid it. They've only ever been a robot. They've never been a fleshbag. Even if it's contradictory that they built themself.

Canononically nonbinary! Uses they/them and (unless my memory is lying to me) previously used it/its, as well as the prefix Mx.

Does not follow the popular fanon theory that Robert Wagstaff is their father or in any way related to them. If Klei confirms this then I will work around that, but for now I don't think they're going that way. They're bitter exes to me. I mean LOOK at them

"That is sort of the pesky part about being made of flesh and blood. Hard to keep from getting caught up in dangerous stuff." He does put his hands up when he's told not to move from his spot, a gesture of surrender as WX runs around and gets the first aid kit. When the butterfly bandages are stuck under his nose, he takes the box to open it in his lap.

"These will probably be enough to last until I can go to the clinic in the morning. You don't have to worry about the stitches. I don't really want to deal with them without a painkiller anyways."

"I've really been through worse. You don't have to fuss so much. Just help me put these on."

He's going to have to throw this hoodie in the wash, as annoying as that is, but his movements are careful enough when he pulls it up and out of the way. The long cuts that had been stitched for him ran parallel to his sides, like he really had been attacked by something with claws.

The source of all the pesky blood is the bottom-most one, where the stitches had split right at the end of it.

"If you didn't see any peroxide in the bathroom, I'll buy us some tomorrow for the stains."

It shoots him a glare - well, more of a glare than its usual resting face - at the thought of not doing dumb things being difficult. Sigh. Only for an organic. Eventually one'd think someone would stop throwing themselves at fights that essentially amounted to assisted suicide. Is getting torn open fun or something?

"WHAT'S TO STOP YOU FROM OPENING IT AGAIN?!"

If only they still had that curved needle they'd carved from a hound's bone, they could just redo the sutures right now without having to sacrifice their good sewing needle, or do them... oddly. But painkillers... They should find out what kinds of foragables they were dealing with here. If the regions with more interesting flora had anything like the Constant, there could be something potent enough for proper medical use. If nothing else, something to get high off of to dull the pain.

For now, with a huff, they relent on the idea of redoing his stitches right now. They'd rather not get all up in his nasty flesh self and flesh fluids anyway, after all. Gross. ...Not like they'd had to be convinced to let up or anything.

"UGH. WHATEVER. IF YOU BLEED OUT IN YOUR SLEEP DON'T BLAME ME"

Yeah, they're the absolute best at handling rejection in any form.

WX will act as a second pair of hands then, and they ready the first closure as he lifts his hoodie- only to freeze when they see the wound. So there are monsters in this world.

"WHAT-" oh, those recollections of Wilson covered in gashes from a lost battle with a tentacle patch are back with a vengence. "WHAT DID THIS?"

Right, the closure. Don't just sit there watching him bleed, WX-78. It rushes to apply it and pull it tight, a bit hurriedly for how much care this task should probably be given.

"THERE- UH" In their rush to find the kit, they hadn't even taken note of any of the other things in the cabinets. There was definitely... let's see, toilet paper, a soap refill, ethanol? ...They couldn't remember if they'd even seen peroxide. "I DIDN'T SEE ANY." That might be true.

Sure, the pancakes were slightly burnt, but only a little! And they even had whipped cream and strawberries for them!! WX was going all out to be generous, and this was how he reacts!? ...Okay, maybe it was just because the strawberries were shortdated, but still, they haven't gone squishy yet or anything... At least the eggs were good. Over easy, and only one of them had an exploded yolk.

At least he doesn't have to reintroduce himself. Though he probably does since the robot - WX-78 if he remembers right - didn't even call SInclair by his name. Whatever. It probably wouldn't remember his name anyway.

Sinclair awkwardly fidgets with his gloved fingers fighting through his fragile pride to ask the question he brought up.

"Um... this place," He gestures to the building behind, specifically to the third floor window. "I'm trying to figure out, um... the fan. The ceiling fan? It won't work and neither do the outlets... I'm just trying to figure out if there's any way I can fix them myself."

The internet can only carry him so far.

"I-I can pay you?" Not much, but he can go a bit thin on his meals if he has to. "You don't, um, need to fix anything, just... if you could give me some advice on how to fix it myself... I can't, er, really afford an actual electrician r-right now..." The last part is mumbled under his breath as he starts to lose what little steam he had to ask for help in the first place.

As he points, they follow his direction and stare up at the window. Nearby lights were on, so presumably it wasn't an issue of lack of electricity. Maybe there had been a simple mistake, or maybe whoever worked on it last did a lazy job.

"I ASSUME THE POWER IS CONNECTED?"

Best to eliminate the easiest solutions first.

"AND YOU'VE CHECKED THE BREAKER?"

If everything else worked fine, the breaker being thrown would be less likely, but... Still. Better to gather as much information as they could.

"I HAVE TIME. LET ME TAKE A LOOK AND WE'LL DECIDE BASED ON HOW LONG IT TAKES."

Can't afford an "actual" electrician, huh. Well, to be fair, they weren't exactly licensed here - but they could still take offense at anything if they felt like it.

Whatever. The guy had been agreeable enough (or really a pushover) when it'd told him he'd be its assistant before the Stars threw it out, so may as well give him further reason to do what they say by making him owe them a favor.

What? "Repay him for having his teammate disappear in front of him?" Do they look like a charity?

The lake is still a little frigid, not quite fit for swimming. Despite that, Monkey King still stands up to his waist in it, splashing cold water onto his face. The 'why' becomes obvious when streaks of pollen and flowers float away from him, making him sigh in relief.

"It helps for a bit", he explains to the figure on the shore, feeling slight deja vu. He doesn't know who this guy is, though. "Might not work for you though. Make you... short-circuit or something."

They really hadn't meant to stare. WX-78 had been using the lake's surface as a mirror, inspecting the moss that was taking over their cheek and spreading down their neck, when the Monkey King had shown up. At first they were disinterested, but their curiosity had gotten the better of them when he'd waded out into the shallows of the lake without a second thought. It was so early in the season, wasn't it cold?

When he speaks to them, they jump. They really hadn't meant to stare. Since when were they so on edge, that someone talking to them would make them flinch? And... they check their hands. Still metal. Should they really be able to understand a monkey? How would they even have Moon Quay amulets? Here?

It takes them only a moment to regain their composure - much as they can, while colonized by the awful pollen - before they can speak to him, in return.

"NO. WATER AND I DO NOT MIX."

In spite of their deep distaste for all things wet, the 'bot can't help but feel a twinge of envy, at him being so easily able to just wash away his problems. It's not fair.

"I WISH IT'D WORK FOR ME."

Prometheus takes a seat finally. It didn't matter where he sat as long as he was at an equal-enough height with his friend. He at least considered WX a friend, despite their brief meeting earlier. He wonders if maybe one day WX-78 would come to see him the same way. He hopes so!

"Might I ask what is a bio scanalyzer? I look forward to seeing what more you have in store." Prometheus loved learning new things, and he was always happy to see people doing what they loved! It's so clear that WX saw this little creation as his pride.

Now, followed by his friend's question, Prometheus exhales a soft sigh. It warrants a worried trill from Moondust, who briefly brings his little blue eyes to his companion. Prometheus smiles at the pseudodragon, which then prompts the dragon to focus back on the machine.

"One of my dear friend has returned to his homeworld. I do not suppose it is something I will get used to. How about yourself? With everything that happened...are you okay?"

The small automaton cocks its head and hums. They found the name rather straightforward, but perhaps it wasn't so for those without the same technological basis. If you showed someone from another time period technology from today, while they may understand the concept after explanation, they'd likely be shocked or confused. It stood to reason that the same was true of terminology.

"HE SCANS BIOLOGICAL ENTITIES AND ANALYZES THEIR CAPABILITIES. AFTER HE DETERMINES IF ANY WOULD BE PRACTICAL FOR MY USE," it brushes its hand against Jimmy again, "HE CONVERTS THE INFORMATION INTO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO APPEND THE ASPECT TO MYSELF, AND OUTPUTS IT ON PUNCHCARDS."

It may have to provide definitions for some of those concepts, again, but somehow it didn't mind. In the Constant, someone always had some question or other for how its machines worked, and save for the few it trusted as mechanics never seemed to care to remember much of anything. Yet, here, when those they'd allowed close to themself (close enough to meet up more than once, intentionally) inquired about things they thought basic, explaining felt more like an opportunity to share, or to show off its intelligence, rather than being used for information that no one else cared to retain.

"OH."

Suddenly the warmth in their chassis at their pride for their creation vanishes, chased out by a hollow mourning.

"...I AM FAMILIAR. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THAT KIND OF LOSS BEFORE." Its gaze, which had landed on Prometheus when he shared his pain, now shifts away uncomfortably. WX felt... much more empathetic than it'd like. It felt in general much more than it'd like. "CONDOLENCES."

And, just as easily, the subject was back on themself. No need to worry about the twang in their empathy module!

"I HAVE BEEN ALRIGHT. I WILL ADAPT AS I ALWAYS HAVE."

Raiden shrugs, his gaze flickering away from the other. "I mean, you're not the only one who needs it. I'm a cyborg, you know."

Well obviously, they didn't know. It was still a surreal experience. He never though he'd pass as a regular human again-- but if he was going to anywhere, it would be here, where transplants could look like just about anything. Not that he was complaining. It just meant he needed to have this conversation more times than he was used to.

"I'm not as self-sufficient as you, though. If something like what happened to you happened to me, I'd just die. Too many supplies I need manufactured, and basically all my maintenance is something I need a specialist to do." He says, trying to keep the bitterness out of his voice.

"OH!"

So their initial assumpting had been correct. That's what they get for second-guessing themself, right?

"HM." One hand comes up to stroke thoughtfully at their chin, while they bounce a leg with impatient energy. "YOU KNOW,"

"I AM GOOD AT ROBOTIC ENGINEERING. I HAVE BEEN IN THE PROCESS OF SETTING UP A WORKSHOP IN MY ROOM."

Swinging their legs as they hang above the floor - sometimes being short was fun - they look up at Raiden curiously. Sure, they may as well offer.

"I COULD FIGURE OUT HOW YOUR MAINTENANCE WORKS. IT CAN'T BE THAT HARD FOR SOMEONE WITH AN ENGINEERING DEGREE."

...

The conversation seemed to help pass the time on the way to the Mistwood. The trip went by quickly, and with it the sky darkened with the gradually setting sun. Soon enough their stop arrived and WX-78 signaled to be let off, getting up and - wobbily - heading to the door before the bus even pulled over.

"OKAY. IF YOU SEE SHAPES OR SHADOWS OR WHATEVER IN MIST OR AT THE EDGE OF YOUR VISION, DO NOT APPROACH THEM."

They had yet to learn all the mechanics of the Mistwood, and they weren't keen to rush it- especially not now, when they were acting as a guide to someone else. Still, they could only assume,

"DON'T EVEN LOOK DIRECTLY AT THEM."

Maybe there wasn't any danger to it. They didn't know that for sure, though, and didn't want to chance it today, especially not when dusk was rapidly approaching.

"LET'S GO FIND SOME FOOD"

Good, she doesn't look too crazy then.

"Sweet, got what ya need?" says Uzi, straightening up. "Even if we can't go back there, it's not like there's not plenty of stores like that in Fibonacci. Who knew there's such a big marker for scrap metal for humans? Like, what do they even do with it?"

Not her problem. She waves Wex to follow, using the Solver to lift her ill-gotten gains. "Yeah, I was just gonna hitch a ride and see where inspiration takes me. Blowing up shit in old ruined buildings is like half of what I used to do back home," she says.

One of the items in the bins lifts itself up and drops into Uzi's hand, where she begins to peel away the metal casing to get at the innards.

"So, like, are you an engineer or something?" she says, still focused on her own work. "Feels like not enough people around here are... No, why am I being subtle? People don't know shit about mechanics or electronics. Kinda sucks having to dumb down what I wanna say."

Uzi sticks the metal in her mouth, chewing as she fiddles with the item's delicate insides. "Ooh, this looks fun. Anyways, I'm just glad there's more robots. Talking to humans all day is exhausting."

Not like she's, like, happy someone like WX is here or anything. But it's cool. WX is cool.

"Aaaaanyways. You good to go? I got a place I usually use when I wanna blow stuff up."

A single nod - though her question was probably rhetorical considering the way she keeps talking without time for an answer.

She's not wrong. There are a lot of pawn shops, scrap shops, and other second-hand stores in Fibonacci. It's honestly a bit odd, considering the structure of the city really only ought to be able to support a few of the same variety, and if they all could get enough business to stay afloat then the endless bins of odds and ends and whatnot should eventually dry up. Sure, there are a lot of people here, but people can only produce non-garbage garbage so quickly, right? Plus, how quickly can the shopkeeps sort through it all? It has to be automated NPC nonsense, WX concludes.

"YOU WOULD GET ALONG WELL WITH WILLOW."

Well, that's an offhanded comment they hadn't really meant to say. Oh well, just more baggage to unpack. Later. Alone.

"I WAS. I MEAN, I AM? I GUESS. I DON'T DO AS MUCH ENGINEERING AS I USED TO."

Although, they were currently trying to get back into it, weren't they? The main thing that had been keeping it from its work was the lack of mechanical supplies out in the wilderness - there aren't terribly many hardware stores in say, an untouched forest or desert - so now that they had stable housing in a city again and were fairly well settled in, it was time to indulge in its hobby and get tinkering again. Maybe they'd make a job of it again someday. On that note, they nod in the direction of their box of metal goodies and add,

"YET." Before then shaking their head disappointingly, "THEY DON'T AND IT NEVER STOPS BEING EXHAUSTING. HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO EXPLAIN THE BASICS BEFORE THEY STICKS?" Stupid meat brains prioritizing retaining stupid things like social skills instead of math and machinery.

"WHENEVER YOU'RE READY."

Octavo hesitates, ears flattening back. "Is this... uncomfortable for you? We could try another way. I'm not a voice coach, though. I thought I could make some adjustment to your internals, but I don't want to damage you either."

This clearly was going to be nothing like tuning a piano or cleaning an oboe. It looks more like the inside of a grandfather clock. Lots of delicate little moving pieces and wires that went to the gods knew where.

With their chassis hanging open, their voice has an odd, echo-y quality to it - the sound usually muffled and directed outward now heard as it reverberates within their chest.

"IT'S- FINE."

If anything, the extra airflow should help cool their fluster, right?

Even if the fans are loud, now exposed to the open air.

If only the fans in their head were equipped to manage the heat from their embarrassment. Its faceplate burns hot like a stove on low, and the warmth only serves to further cloud its thoughts.

It's fine, it tells itself.

"UH"

Damnit, it was resorting to filler non-words again.

"JUST... BE CAREFUL WITH ME."

Their hand takes his wrist, carefully too, where his hand had been hovering over their guts, and guides it to a particular module. WX's fans whirr louder for a moment before it regains its composure,

"THIS IS MY VOICEBOX. IT- IF THERE'S ANYTHING YOU CAN DO, IT WILL BE HERE."

11. What do they think of creation? Do they believe in evolution or do they believe in God? What is their religion like?

WX-78 never believed in the concept of a god of creation. Everything they saw was created by something else, and they could watch the processes that brought it to be. Their family was probably religious, and being in Ohio in the 1880s or 1890s probably christian, but when they were very little they had already decided all of that was stupid. They could observe why it was stupid, and if nothing else this "all powerful force of love" never did anything good for them. At this point, they aren't even sure that the gods of the Constant are really "gods" so much as just beings who posses power, and they are resolute in finding a way to take that power for the mself.

What's unusual idfk uhh. what counts as a characterstic They have a fidgeting habit that carried over from a skin-picking habit when they were human, which contributes the greenish rust patch on one cheek that mirrors acne people who pick their face tend to have. WX-78 actually prefers food that's a bit too stale or otherwise questionable for others' tastes- originally it was a matter of practicality, then showing off their toughness, and eventually it developed into an ingrained preference. They will not address this. They snore. This would not be unusual, except that they're a robot. It's not an issue of things catching their fans so much as their voice synth humming sometimes to self-sooth if something disturbs them without waking them. im so brain melted from how busy these past like 3 weeks have been I'm sorry I'll just owe you 2 characteristics I can't think right now but I've kept this in my inbox/drafts for so long already orz

The automaton stiffed only slightly at the reassurance, and had oddly relaxed as soon as Prometheus' hand found its way around their shoulder.

There was the gnawing anger in the back of their mind, that they were being forced to be so vulnerable against their better judgement, but it wasn't as strong as it ought to be. They never should have taken the invitation to meet again at the park, not so long as the damnable flowers still bloomed everywhere! They never should have left their room!

Now they were sobbing on a park bench, leaning against a friend - ah, were they friends? - who was rubbing careful circles on their shoulder.

"BUT- HE-"

It wasn't their fault. They never would have taken the blame for someone else's actions, especially not someone who they hated so much.

Never, except when convinced to let down their walls and let their suppressed feelings show. Those accursed emotions they couldn't rid themself of. They didn't even need to be intoxicated right now to expose their vulnerability, because the pollen - which was making their sniffling so much worse - was doing the job just fine on its own.

"HE NEVER-" a shaky, breathless gasp between sobs, "HE NEVER WOULD HAVE, HA-AVE DONE IT IF I'D, I'D LISTENED"

Not that they think they should have listened. When Robert had suddenly turned against everything the two had been working toward, just kowtowing and throwing everything out would have gotten them nowhere except as hateful as they are now. The fight would have still happened, just much more regrettable let to fester.

But all of those prototype robots... If WX-78 hadn't pressed on, maybe he would never have thought to destroy them all. Maybe they'd have been left alone, forgotten in crates somewhere. Still alive.

Listening to them hyperventilate as they weep, Prometheus can only slowly shake his head. Saying much more would only aggrevate the issue, and he continues massaging their shoulder with his thumb, arm still holding them against his side on the bench.

"It wasn't your fault," He repeats, hoping that the sentiment would eventually get through.

As soon as the little robot could recover from their breakdown, they would disable their optical wiper fluid ducts and deny that this ever happened.

5. What are their chief tension areas? 

Iunno what that means. Pet peeves? Sore spots? I'm going with "tension" as in physical. Their shoulder used to grind and even fall loose for the longest time, but it has since been repaired by Constantine when he was last here. One of the gears in their left knee has some oxidation on it, which translates into a stiff, irritable joint. Not quite arthritis- but if it got any rustier it sure could be. Often it'll stick and they'll have to "crack" the joint like one might do with a stiff knee or back.

They like to lose their focus in watching the world go by on the bus. In their time living in New York, there weren't any subways there yet; the first one opened in late 1904, by which time they'd have already headed back to Ohio. If my mental timeline is right. Anyway they have little to no experience with subways, and probably wouldn't care for it too much.
