These Pick of The Bunch Mother's Day Cards Will Leave You Spoiled For Choice
Nowadays, the world of greeting cards and gifts is one of far reaching choice and choosing from all the available Mother’s Day Cards for Mothering Sunday is no different. With over 500 card publishers in the UK creating greeting card messages and designs for Mothers Day Cards, you’re spoilt for choice and with many of these publishers long since realised that not all Mums want a card that’s traditionally flowery or ‘twee’, Happy Mother’s Day Cards and Funny Mother’s Day Cards especially are something which you won’t want to overlook!
How do you work through everything that’s available?
To help you choose, I’ve grouped all the available mother’s day cards designs into some fairly broad categories and revealed some of my personal favourites in this list, in the hope that it helps you more easily identify what sort of card your lovely Mum might enjoy receiving this year.
Let’s start with some traditional designs…
At the time of writing, there’s no shortage of traditional Mother’s Day Card designs being published, with plenty to choose from at value end of the market, rising though to cards from Five Dollar Shake, whose offerings can retail at £5+. These traditional mother’s day cards often include pictures of cute images of flowers, cats, owls, or anything that fits the bill! Typically pink in colour with fancy, ornate writing, you’ll see them wherever there’s a Mother’s Day Card section in the local store because, to put it quite frankly, they’re super popular. My pick of the traditional publishers is Lucilla Lavender. With premium production and design at good value prices (and for the Mum that loves traditional mother’s day card designs) they have plenty to choose from. The picture below shows an example of their range and the quality of the card you can expect.
Moving away from traditional cards, but staying at the prettier end of the market, you have what I call the cute & colourful mother’s day cards. These cards are still traditional in aspect and colour, however, they have been given a refreshing, modern make-over. They are often bought by younger persons as they appeal to a child’s more generally colourful nature! Again, there’s no shortage of card publishers making this type of card, however, my personal fav is from Megan Claire, whose Little Posy range is particularly delightful.
So now we move to what I would classify as the Funky & Design Led category. These cards are most certainly for the more modern Mum (not necessarily younger by the way…there are plenty of older woman who I would class as ‘Modern Mums’!). These cards can take a funky slant on the traditional flavour of Mother’s Day, often using cutting edge design or print techniques to create something beautiful and cool. Take, for example, Loveday Designs Voucher cards. A simple idea, executed to perfection and something very different for mum to receive on her special day. You might even decide to follow up on the Voucher sentiment, by actually ensuring your Mum enjoys what you’ve promised!
Handmade & embellished cards are now very popular across all card giving events and Mother’s Day is no different. Embellishing a card with glass beads or diamanté, foiling or flittering them (flittering is the use of glitter to make them sparkle), as well as using raised patches of paper or card (embossing) – all help to create that ‘special’ feel to a greetings card. There is no doubt that these extra flourishes on a card do truly make them feel ‘premium’ and these types of techniques work a treat on an occasion such as Mother’s Day. There are some superb publishers creating products like this and they don’t cost as much as you might think. My pointers are Blue Eyed Sun and English Graphics. Blue Eyed Sun are a Brighton based publisher and they produce some fantastic products, many of which are based on original embroidered art, reproduced using embellishing technique. English Graphics create some stunning cards using little jewels to enhance an already superb design. I would say that of all the categories described in this post, this is the fastest growing and I would expect to see this sub-section of mother’s day cards grow exponentially in the coming years.
And last, but by no means least, are humour related or funny mother’s day cards. While humour has always been very popular for Father’s Day, humour driven card designs are now gaining ground within the Mother’s Day event too, which is generally due, I believe, to the quality of humour products now available in the UK market. Take, for example, Paperlink’s Froot Loop range. They have managed to combine designs and words that are not only funny, but also still manage to convey the Mother’s Day sentiment. Nothing of the meaning of the occasion is lost in these cards, despite the fact that their message leads on humour. A publisher called Ohh Deer creates some very funny cards and they have managed to carry this across well into Mother’s Day, including one that even has the ‘F’ word in it! As As far back as just 5 years ago, I think it would have been unheard of to include a swear word on a Mother’s Day Car. However, in this case it’s appropriately used and – when given to the right Mum – would, I’m sure, go down very well. So, as you’ll now be aware the choice is really very broad and there’s no excuse for not sending something a little different this year and making sure your Mum continues to feel extra special this Sunday march 6th, on that one day of the year, dedicated entirely to her!
