Penguin Antics

crxaelita:
Aelita opened her door to find Ichigo standing there with a penguin in his arms. Her eyes immediately sparkled at the sight of the animal but it narrowed upon sight of the wound on its body. She questioned the male about what happened, ushering him into the room and closed the door. She took out a few towels she had in her luggage and placed them on the table. She gently took the animal from him and put it on top.
“It must be really hurt and tired. The poor thing isn’t even trying to escape from us. Where did you find it?”
tw: mentions of blood, animal harm.
'caring' typically isn't a trait that comes to mind when referring to ichigo, if you were to ask anyone. anyone except for one or two of his friends, and maybe that one girl ichigo spends a decent amount of his time worrying over, aelita -- even then, though, when he cares he struggles to show it, to the point where he just accepts that people won't think he really cares because it's easier to just take that attitude and roll with it.
so he himself is a little surprised by how he reacts when he rounds a corner headed back towards their resort and hears the garbled, sad sound of a creature obviously in pain. "what on earth-" he stops in his tracks, furrows his brows and takes a step toward the sound. at first, he's cautious, his hand resting on where his wand sits in his back pocket (it could be a magical creature, and a foreign one at that) but when he sees the source, he blinks several times. there's a tiny little pile of blue and white feathers, and some spatters of blood on the grass next to it. it's shivering, and still making that sound -- ichigo the uncaring finds himself frowning deeply and crouching down next to it, making a tsk sound with his tongue. ichigo is human, after all -- no human can see a small creature hurting and not feel something.
that being said, he has no idea what to do. eyes slightly wide, ichigo tries to scan for what's wrong but all he can't see the actual wound without touching the bird. he can interpolate from the way it's shaking and the amount of blood on the ground, and some kind of pawprints going off into some bushes to the side that it's most likely been attacked... and luckily, not eaten. there's no guarantee that he can do anything for it, but even still, ichigo feels the urge to try to pick it up and hold it in his arms. i can't do that, that's unsanitary, is his first thought. is there a potion that would protect him from the bird flu? probably not. he glances up at the path he was walking on before, eyes searching for someone else who could help him or offer advice -- but no one else seems to be in the area. damn. as ichigo presses his lips together and looks back at the little bird, fighting with himself, a cold breeze blows by, ruffling all of the little feathers as the bird whines weakly.
"ah, to hell with it." ichigo takes off his scarf and uses it to scoop the penguin into his arms as it cries in protest. "don't you complain, i'm trying to help you!" he scowls lightly as he realizes his scarf will be stained, but he, uncharacteristically, realizes that he doesn't really care.
as he stands up and holds the shuddering bird close to him with both arms, he wonders if he knows any spells that could help... but no, most likely not, because he'd never wanted to apply himself in care of magical creatures. magical creatures? -- immediately, his young friend's face pops into his mind. ah, aelita. even though this is a regular animal, he thinks, she knows much much more about this kind of thing than he does.
this is how he finds himself at her door, his arms aching a little from the combination of the cold and having his arms in a locked position to keep the bird warm. he's a little bit surprised (and relieved) that it's still breathing -- he can feel its tiny heart beating even through his layers of clothing. it feels strange to literally hold a life in his hands, and maybe that new sense of responsibility is what makes him so urgent as he walks into the girl's room.
"i didn't see what happened, i just found it like this just off the trail a little ways away." he answers as calm as ever, though his eyes are glued to the little bird on the table and his brows are still drawn, showing his worry. "it was attacked, i think. though i didn't see by what.' he glances over at her. "can you do anything?" his frown deepens. “it’s dying, right..?” he adds, unhappily.
