Thanks for coming to my TED talk on why Max McDaniels is a brilliant character

(The Tapestry and Impyrium spoilers)

The absolutely brilliant thing about Max McDaniels is that he’s a teenage white boy whose magic power is essentially becoming overcome with bloodlust and going on killing sprees, and yet he’s the nicest, most compassionate character in the whole series. He’s compassionate to a fault. Having a main character, especially a male character, with that kind of magic power could easily devolve into gritty, angsty, macho BS, but it doesn’t, because the rest of his personality contrasts so much and balances it out. Yes, he has a temper that often gets the better of him, but the vast majority of the times he loses his temper are in defense of someone who is being hurt or insulted, and the fact that he needs to learn to control his emotions is verbally acknowledged and improves as he matures.

Max is nice to the hags. He makes sure Mr. Bonn gets koukerrous. When Cooper gets possessed and almost kills him he reminds everyone that it’s not his fault and he needs help. When he realizes Nix and Valya aren’t evil he accepts that his worldview is flawed, makes them tea as an apology, and actively works for better integration and acceptance of vyes. It’s the power of love and friendship that helps him regain some control when he snaps after Scathach’s death. He breaks his own geis out of empathy for the Formorian. He buries his clones after they spend two books trying to kill him, murder his girlfriend, and leave him with a fatal wound. And then, in the glimpse we get of him in Impyrium, despite now being a literal god with no reason to care about the problems of mortals, he’s so eager to help a girl he’s never met that he momentarily forgets about said wound and almost puts himself in grave danger by trying to enter the mortal world to get to her.

Max McDaniels is incredibly compassionate and empathetic, protecting and having pity for people he’s doesn’t even like or have done him wrong. He’s a monster-slaying demigod warrior whose primary magic ability is essentially bloodlust and murder, but instead of being used in a “look he’s such a gritty badass, he just killed a bunch of people for no reason” kind of way, it is instead used to power his role as a protector - a protector of his family and friends, his school, the power of good, and all the innocent people he meets, human or not. Additionally, he has a sense of humor, he has moments of youthful slip-ups (such as his relationship problems with Julie and the fact that he didn’t tell anyone he’d seen their greatest enemy because he wanted to “pretend it didn’t happen”), he has his moments of obliviousness, and there are other aspects of magic that he’s not good at or doesn’t understand. He’s not some dark, angsty badass who’s somehow good at everything - he’s a relateable, funny, compassionate, vulnerable person who will stand up for what’s right or die trying, and also doesn’t know how to hold a baby. That’s why he’s our Max.
