her fingers were gently tugging through his hair, content that the wine had loosened them up just enough to coax them into this comfortable silence. it was a nice change from their usual pretentious pillow talk, but she couldn’t complain when she heard him speak. even if it was a loaded suggestion. where aspen would usually fall into a panic mode at the mention of any major life decision, she could only smirk in amusement. “our kids would be fucking adorable.” she agreed, relaxed motion in his hair unwavering. “unless they looked like you..” 

he closed the already slim distance between them to press a kiss to her forehead, pushing a few pesky stray hairs back behind her ear with the hand free of his now empty wine glass. “you’re...lucky you’re that cute.” he muttered, stifling an inebriated hiccup. “i mean it though.” his words were nearly lost, so intimate and bare that even in his current state he felt entirely exposed letting them drift from his rosy thoughts out into the air. “cause i love you, y’know.”

            molly had always liked being a little bit of a tease. give them a taste and then pull them back before they can get a full bite– and that was the game she was playing with him. yet something gnawed in the back of her mind that perhaps this, what she felt, was more than one of her games. glancing over her shoulder and seeing him moving in her direction in the hallway, she immediately cleared her throat and fluffed her hair, looking back into her locker. a beat passed and she looked again, hoping perhaps he’d stop to say something.

girls like that would always exist. girls like that would always be there with a toss of perfumed hair, with cherry-coated smiles. girls with dreams and stardust and sinful wishes dripping from their pores. they would come and go through these halls and leave no permanent mark upon him. but this one? she was somehow more. her games? they were the same, and they didn’t phase him. but there was something deeper about her nature that was intoxicating. it was dangerous. jamie, mr. haworth, dreaded each time his duties as her english teacher forced him to interact with her. “hey, uh, molly! great job with that essay. very..insightful.” his words came out forced but he only hoped she wouldn’t notice the absurd sweating of his palms. get it together...

this conversation was not favorable for either one of them, but it was one that needed to be had. if it was any other thing, he would have ignored it, but it was them. they had become different people in the process and it would be rightfully so that they addressed it. so as she spoke, he let out the trail of smoke, slowly spiraling to the sky before looked over at her, his curls falling to his face. “you know that’s not true.” he hummed with a quick shake of his head before he pushed away the hair that refused to find a new spot. this was honesty that he didn’t want to face. oh lord. “you know you’ve changed and you know you can’t just say you haven’t. that won’t fly. you gotta be honest, at least in some form.” he speaks slowly, mostly because he’s chewing each word a hundred times, trying to figure out if this is a route he really wants to take. 

his apprehension is apparently contagious because each second that passes drags on in her mind for an eternity and only further convinces her that the only way out of this might be to actually run into the street to be taken away by oncoming traffic. her fidgeting left hand searches desperately for something to do, settling upon a loose thread on the pocket of her jeans to tug and twist. scout sharply inhales a breath, mentally preparing herself for the ugly part of this––the truth. “maybe we’ve just...outgrown each other? i don’t...” she trails off, the air leaving her lips and drawing out with it all of her energy. what a copout, ridiculous, stupid answer. outgrowing each other? as if their relationship could be compared to the pair of shoes she’d kept from high school that gave her blisters now.

this could’ve been the merlot warming his veins and bringing a sensation akin to electricity across his skin as he offered aspen’s arm a small nudge and caress, but the eternal pragmatist felt thoroughly compelled to turn towards his beloved with a look of uncharacteristic dreaminess and timidly propose the idea, “hey, we should have kids. they’d be cute. i dunno.” even he must’ve realized the absurdity of the idea as it escaped him, a small chuckle following suit.

the flesh is weak, but he needs this job and this student is not about to jeopardize the rest of his life and career. but those eyes, and the promise of youth that they hold, press upon his every sense of self control. that beautiful mind of theirs, compelling and exhausting all at once... the way they shamelessly flirt, knowing full well that he cannot, will not, cross that line.

“i miss the old you.” he breathed, pulling from the joint before his eyes glazed over the other. “the one that held me down and kinda told the truth.” he hummed, leaning against the brick wall. they were really having this conversation in the middle of nowhere. and while it wasn’t the best idea, here he was. at least he was going to be high for this. this wasn’t a conversation silas wanted sober.

she could feel the inevitability of this dreaded conversation from a mile away, sensing his apprehension and elusive nature that had plagued their entire evening. it was always something, wasn’t it? something she was doing, saying, acting like, not doing... she would ignore his drug use, but only because of her inescapable fondness for him (a burden she wore well). there was no schmoozing her way around this, no running from him now. with her left hand clenching and unclenching itself out of anxious habit, scout gritted her teeth and turned to face him finally, “the old me? what is that even supposed to mean...i haven’t changed. i’m still me.”  how many lies did a person have to tell before it became any easier? this question pressed diligently against her thoughts in the silence that followed.

she smiles into his embrace, and once there was space between them again, concerned hues examine his visage. “ let’s go home, o-okay? ” the blonde’s heart feels heavy, as she regards his obvious distress - wishing she could take it all  away.

sky’s response is immediate, instinctual–– “yes. please, t-take me home.” he  keeps rocking back and forth on his heels, giving anxious glances right and left. the baggie of coke is burning a hole in his right hand and all he can possibly think about is getting home to those neat little white lines, and the haven of her arms. he did not know which he craved more.
