[Image ID: A meme template "Wow! I learned something deep from this media/The actual idea of the media went over your head" remade for Chants of Sennaar. On the left is a game's cover, at which a drawn person's head looks from the right. Over the head drawn a speech bubble, saying "wow!! communication, as an exchange of information, has many facets and manifests itself in every aspect of society, making speech as natural and constant as breath; being a social species, humanity holds it as its greatest power, and disregarding communication brings pain and rot." From the cover and over the speech bubble goes a pink arrow with a text "figuring out what other people mean fucking sucks". /.End ID]

i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.
Yee yee!!! You got it right on the nose!
Bounce light is something I didn't cover but I adore it!
Gotta work on my bounce light 💪

James Gurney is an absolute master and gives really good clarity on colour techniques. Yes, it is traditional paint focused, but the principles are the same. Yes it is informed by the environmental colour but as a painting technique it is achieved this way!
I would also suggest that in digital processing, rather than apply a regular colour layer at a mid opacity, try out the different types of layers, Eg. Screen or Multiply. This can give you at least a starting point to help direct your colour palette.
Layer Blend Modes are so so so important to working in digital art. There's a ton of math that goes into figuring out how the layers should blend together, which is why some of the modes you can pick are literally called Multiply, Add, Divide, and Difference (that's subtraction). The graphics software takes the color values of your base and blend layers and runs a calculation to get your resulting layer appearance. The ones that don't have specifically mathematical sounding names are still doing calculations, but they're more complicated (think linear Algebra and higher). Some of them, like dodge and burn, are named for actual photo editing techniques.
While it's not super important to know about the mathematical side of blend modes, I think it's worth knowing at least enough about how each of the categories of blend modes works and why they do what they do; if for no other reason than having a starting point when you start experimenting with them in your work.
An overview of the basic blend modes and how they work from Genevieve's Design Studio: Accessible with minimal color knowledge; practical and illustration focused. https://youtu.be/kMc87hQrJd0?si=TWCB365pKSfWS8p0. (16 minutes) This creator also has a ton of free resources you can download, including a Blend Modes cheatsheet, but fair warning: you have to create an account to get them!
Want to learn even more about the math-y stuff? It has great film visuals! A video from FilmmakerIQ: You need some basic knowledge of RGB color models, understanding of values/luma, and at least a tenuous understanding of Algebraic formulas. With how popular the fanon interpretation of Gaster is, it's easy to forget that it is fanon. Here's a different take.
My favorite thing about Wanderstop is something I think it has in common with the Pathologic games, in that it doesn't feel constrained to a loop of making the player feel good, and in fact goes out of it's way to make you feel BAD.
Wanderstop is a loop, kinda, and every new start you lose almost everything that you had saved. Your mugs, your trinkets, the colors you change the pluffins to, it resets and there is no way around it. You HAVE to become comfortable with profound change because it's baked into the gameplay loop.
On top of that, every loop you meet new people with interesting problems that need to be solved, and the game does not let you solve them. You never see all but one the characters ever again, Boro, the shop owner, is the only constant. And the other characters will always leave before you can solve their problem. You cannot heal the curse, you cannot help the demon hunter find his confidence, your biggest fan will be dissapointed in you no matter what you do and he will suffer irreversible consequences because of it. And there's really no way to help them.
Wanderstop FORCES you to become comfortable with change and unresolved problems/conflict and people leaving and being powerless. It forces you to confront the realities of life, because we really will lose touch with people forever and not be able to help everyone or solve every problem and how you will lose belongings and leave places you love and jobs that fulfilled you and give up dreams that are no longer within reach and that is just how it is. You can scream and cry and cling to every little thing as much as you want, but it won't change it.
And idk I just love that. Change is so uncomfortable and you are going to get used to it weather you like it or not because you CAN get used to it or you can destroy your life trying to prevent it and end up alone and miserable. You cannot give up living your life for fear of change. And you're not gonna have a choice!!
fav character + fav cup from wanderstop
Go play Wanderstop right now.
Okay but seriously, Wanderstop instantly became one of my favorite games of all time. I felt like a Mucha inspired piece totally matches the soft earthy vibes. Go play it if you want a relaxing yet intensely introspective experience!
if you're not reading all the books in Wanderstop you're missing the literature of the year
