Junicorn Day 1! I’m following @camelidae ‘s abbreviated list of 12 instead of doing 30, I can never make it all the way through 30 lol
Adding an extra theme, all the unicorns this month will feature a North American native wildflower, and today’s is a Dragon’s Mouth Orchid!
in songs prescribed for the rusalka week a common motif is of rusalka asking people to give her clothes. "girls, sisters, give me namitka — if not a thin one, then at least white" (дівки-сестрички, дайте намітки — хоч не тоненької, аби біленької); "girls, sisters, give me a skirt, oh early-early" (дєвочкі-сестрички, дайте мнє споднички, ой рано-рано), "boys, brothers, give me a shirt" (хлопчики-браточки, дайте мнє сорочки)
clothes are considered, among other things, a marker of humanity; dead, as well as beasts, don't need clothes. traditionally, ukrainians buried their dead in linen shirts, which was basically their underwear — and in a traditonal society, being in your underwear is almost the same as being naked. since the point of the rusalka week is to invite them into your space so they can gift you and your household prosperity, to give them clothes is one of the ways by which they can enter the human world. on the other hand, the girls that participate in rusalian rituals may themselves undress and uncover their hair, therefore coming closer to the dead and the bestial. both rusalky and the living therefore can meet halfway through.
Pixel post dividers for everyone! It's not much, but feel free to use them if you'd like. I don't know the ideal size for these, so let me know if they're too tall. I can make them a bit shorter next time.
"fandom is dying," they whine as they stab artists and writers in the chest with discourse knives and harassment screws. "why isn't anyone making content for me to greedily consume for free as I make the experience worse for them and everyone around me?"
I'm following closely the discussions you post about beta-reading (thank you for your service! 🙏 your kindness and patience astound every time) and I'm genuinely baffled by how many people seem to operate under the assumption that an author is obligated in any way whatsoever to take any of the feedback they receive from beta-readers.
I've had three beta-readers in three different fandoms, with all of whom I'm still in very good relationships, and this is literally the first time it's occurred to me that anyone might expect the beta-reader's word to be taken as gospel truth and law.
To my knowledge, my beta-readers have never expected me to reply to each and every remark they make on a draft - I reply only whenever they've asked a direct question or when I don't fully understand and need clarification or want to discuss some problem. In all the rest of the cases - the advice has been given, whether or not I take it in not really up to anyone but me. We can discuss the fic separately, or chat in general about our fandom, but they will only see the end result in the published fic or the next draft in any case.
For me, the feedback a beta-reader gives me is exactly like advice from a friend - I am under no obligation to take it, I can ask more than one person for advice, and I ultimately know my own thoughts, feelings and circumstances best and the final decision is mine alone. What I actually owe to someone who's been kind enough to give me advice is to take time to think about it in good faith and not dismiss it outright, and to thank them. No more and no less.
I believe a beta-reader doesn't know my story better than I do. They are usually not any more qualified to say how it should be written than I am. They are just as subjective and bring as many of their own tastes and prejudices as I do. They cannot and should not dictate how much time and effort I put into writing or editing a story. Hell, some of the people who volunteer to be beta-readers aren't even as good at spag and characterization as they claim they are!
And at the end of the day, even if they are completely in the right (even if we assume there is even such a thing as objective "right" in fic-writing) and I am completely in the wrong, this is my fic, my decision, and my right to make my own mistakes.
(Of course, if (general) you find yourself dismissing everything or most of what your beta-reader tells you, then maybe you either don't really need one, or need a very different type of beta-reader, or simply don't vibe with this person in this exact capacity. Author/beta-reader is a kind of personal relationship, and as every personal relationship, you're free to choose whom and how to have it with, or not have it at all.)
Thank you for letting me put my thoughts into writing here, and for running this blog!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us all!
being a kid and hearing adults say stuff like "woah 2011 was 4 years ago haha" didn't really convey the fucking horror of a youtube video crossing my recommended labelled "9 years ago" and it's from 2017. that's not true. 9 years ago is 2010 or something. don't lie.

Making purely self indulgent fics that are out of character or don't make sense, including bashing fics, is actually totally fine and I don't think they're the plague on fandom that some people treat them as 🤷
I’ve faced a lot of nasty art blocks over my years as an artist but none so detrimental as Going To Work
thank you for putting in words what i have been unable to articulate for the last years haha
and the PROBLEM IS. the PROBLEM is that with other art blocks I can tell myself. oh it’s hard now but time will pass and I will heal from whatever mental or emotional block that’s causing this eventually. but WORK? A Forever Problem. There is no waiting-out Job. Having Job is eternal. Time does not heal Being At Work. Sand is always in our eyes forever
and in a CRUEL twist of fate.. Art Being Job is not the solution you’d think it would be

me: sweet hit me with the good stuff
media: so there's this marginalized underclass of people, right?
me: okay
media: and they're like, stigmatized for something that's mostly an aspect of how they are born, or where they're from, or they're badly misunderstood, right?
me: yup, got it, I'm with ya
media: so these people are rebelling against the current social order, because it's the instrument of their suffering
me: oh good great sure
media: but also they're violent and deranged and need to be stopped
me: ...what
media: yeah they're going too far, they're trying to overthrow the system and assassinate the nice cop trying to help them and also they burned down an orphanage
me: ...why? would they burn down an orphanage??
media: extremism is bad
me: still not seeing what this has to do with their fight though???
media: also now they've shot a dog. oops they shot another dog
me: what?! why? I though their motive was to overthrow oppression??
media: yes but their suffering has also made them evil
me: ...???
media: don't worry though, the good guys will defeat them and restore the status quo
me: the status quo that's been killing people?
media: well it turns out it was only killing the kinds of awful people who burn down orphanages and shoot dogs :)
me: oh. this is actually a pro-authoritarian story, isn't it?
media: nooo of course not don't be sillyyyyyy we're super progressive look one of the cops is a black lady don't be sillyyyyyy

“Years ago a friend of mine had a dream about a strange invention; a staircase you could descend deep underground, in which you heard recordings of all the things anyone had ever said about you, both good and bad. The catch was, you had to pass through all the worst things people had said before you could get to the highest compliments at the very bottom. There is no way I would ever make it more than two and a half steps down such a staircase, but I understand its terrible logic: if we want the rewards of being loved we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.”
— I Know What You Think of Me, Tim Kreider for the New York Times
after YEARS of seeing this quote online and finding it to be the most deeply and resoundingly profound writing i finally found the source article and absolutely nothing could prepare me for this opening paragraph
Okay but the whole article is really interesting and also contains this quote which I’ve never heard before but really like:
“Anyone worth knowing is inevitably also going to be exasperating”
Fascinating essay, I like “loving someone despite their infuriating flaws and essential absurdity”
Secondary poll based on the comments so far:
You two should reconsider your relationship if you're not able to compromise
You're perfect for each other, never involve anyone else in this situation

propose to him with the worst fucking ring you can possibly get your hands on. like not a half-assed, "oh you won't like anything I get anyway," passive-aggression ring, that is not the play, you need to do your research and take some interest in the things that matter to your enemy future husband and really learn about like, the gemstone cuts or whatever, and then you need to get him the most eye-catching ring you can find that would also be completely offensive to his overdeveloped sensibilities. He's putting in all this effort to bribe the cat to bite you, it's the least you could do to step it up in response.
So that anon came back with an adorable proposal story, but I fucking love this idea and need it to make it into someone's fanfic or something
For those who need it 🦐✨🐻
