Wukong’s Christmas Adventure

In the spirit of the holidays, I finally watched Wukong’s Christmas Adventure | 悟空圣诞奇遇记 (2019)! A little after Christmas, but this will be my last JTTW review of 2019! Firstly, this is not a movie- this was an experience.

(This movie came out in 2019 LMAO but the posters still say 2016 and they never changed the 16 date in universe. Don’t ask why the cowherd and weaver girl are here- they’re not in the movie and Wukong never meets Santa)

Wukong’s Christmas Adventure is every bit as cursed as the trailers promised, and more! I don’t know what to focus on: the stiff animation, the Jade Emperor’s Elvis haircut, the fact that Nezha’s eyes point in 2 different directions, himbo Erlang Shen, just Wukong in general, buff Dasher the reindeer or everyone having an IQ of exactly 1. Also, it’s a musical. I will start with the plotline!

We open with Erlang Shen and Nezha, heaven’s police squad, chasing after Rudolph on a flying car. Celestials can’t fly or cloud ride apparently so Erlang and Nezha are fighting average Chinese traffic in their hover car. They’re chasing Rudolph because Santa Clause has come to the East TM and is threatening the Jade Emperor’s rule. We also establish that Nezha has the personality of Scrappy Doo, the head of Lord Farquaad, and the voice of a 40yo man. You’ll feel cursed just by looking at him. Anyway, Rudolph evades both Nezha and Erlang with the help of a 9yo girl named Jing Jing.
