my hot take is that, with some exceptions, making a canonically jewish character explicitly secular/detached from judaism is more often than not just lazy writing in shows not devoted to exploring religious themes

i can think of countless jewish characters across entertainment media, but i can name maybe two whose connection to judaism extends beyond their last name, mentioning hannukah during the christmas episode, and a few thrown-in jokes with yiddish words. that would be fine to a degree, but there’s always some sort of “explanation” for why they don’t connect more to their jewish identity, and that explanation is almost always appropriated from dechristian atheists/non-religious people and ill-matched to judaism (usually it’s that they don’t believe in god or the bible story, which isn’t required in judaism anyway)

it’s perfectly acceptable and necessary to show secular jews. but there is a massive spectrum of and between secular and extremely devout jews, with varying beliefs, perspectives, and cultural identities. if you don’t want to do the research to properly represent a group, then don’t do it at all. half-assed representation has the potential to be even more harmful than not representing in the first place

Stop saying “Jesus was a Jew” in response to antisemitism. It’s stupid and unhelpful.

Antisemites don’t care about facts. You can pontificate all about the Jewishness of Jesus and his first fan club members all you want, but they won’t care and it won’t change their minds.

Never in the last 2000 years has the Jewishness of Jesus stopped Christians from doing a mass murder.

Sometimes the Jewishness of Jesus was an extra motivating factor because Christians were/are mad that Jews of his era “rejected” him and that Jews continue, in their view, to reject him.

You’re functionally saying Jews only have value because of Jesus. Jews shouldn’t face antisemitism because antisemitism is bad. Period. This functionally no different than saying someone shouldn’t be sexist because they have a mom/wife/daughter/etc. People shouldn’t be bigots regardless of whatever tenuous connection they have to a targeted group.

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!
