this scene honestly Does Things to me and i'm tired of pretending otherwise
The inbetween cinematographic scenes to dissolve the homo erotic tension between two scenes are so beautiful that I cant appreciate them enough.
And need'st (wait what is that spelling) I say that I adore grainy shots.
Little fun detail about this shot is that if you look close enough you’ll see how Nigel walking with Helen while John is behind them
sad boi finding out his supposed to be deflowerer slept with w someone else
Good morning and welcome to your Daily!Tom!
Another blast from the past from @sluttymorpheus - he realllllly did all the 2010 things, didn't he? This one is giving young Keanu Reeves to me. He's so bloody cute, though! Just the most adorable thing!
Have a wonderful day!

I think it was an interesting choice to cast two of the genuinely prettiest soft looking guys ever to play the main guys of this movie, like Tom and Eddie are both absolutely pretty boys, it adds so much to this forced kind of ‘machoness’ or wtv of in the themes of the film and their ( at least Alex’s) characters
Yeah, and I think it very much is an intentional choice. Both of them are nearly angelic looking and that really plays on so many of those age-old tropes about beauty being only skin deep, don't judge a book by its cover, etc. The boyish and innocent appearance belies the darkness lurking underneath. It's a classic narrative choice: the Angelic Monster, Beauty juxtaposed with the Horrors in order to exaggerate through contrast.
I don't think this story could have worked in the same way at all if they had been more stereotypical masculine archetypes--typical athletic, brawny, macho types. Like the shows about high school students played by actors who are in their late 20s, where it just doesn't feel realistic at all. Both of them LOOK only 17 (even though Eddie was actually several years older; he always does look younger than he is), and that's important to hammer home the understanding that these are still KIDS. Damaged and twisted kids who do terrible things. I think that contrast is a really important aspect of the narrative.
It does also emphasize that gap between Alex still being a boy and trying to perform the type of "manhood" exemplified by his father and the overall culture he's in. If he had been a beefier, sporty kind of guy rather than an Intellectual type, it would have felt just sort of....expected for him to be an aggressive bully. But pairing it with his angelic face makes it all the more stark. It also helps sell the idea that he's able to fool people more easily.
As a related point of interest, here's a little blurb discussing how casting Alex was about finding someone with the right eyes:
Redmayne is a young actor to watch. Though this is only his first feature film, he captures the character of Alex with subtle verisimilitude. Director Read claims that ‘I wanted to find someone who had the eyes. The casting was all about the eyes.’ This, however, proves to be truer of Tom Sturridge’s portrayal of Nigel. Rather, Eddie Redmayne’s facial expressions as a whole carry his performance. --From Double Trouble: Like Minds
Frankly, both of them have extremely compelling eyes, and also some incredible microexpressive emoting that sells their performance in the movie far beyond the relatively basic lines they deliver.
And here's as video from the Behind the Scenes feature on the DVD: Part 1 - Casting - in which the immediate chemistry between Tom and Eddie is mentioned.

I like this sm
like minds was literally so genius with the case of metaphors. alex being 'jack' and nigel being 'spade', his implement for killing is also a great way to look at alex's character; alex has the need to hurt and nigel has the will to hurt. nigel is the executioner of alex's twisted and repressed urges. if you think about it, they actually really did become one, the two vital and distinct parts of the same cruel machine.
Hi, can you perhaps provide a source for this? It's not a meaning I've seen associated with the name before now.
All the research I've done indicates that Nigel is a Latinization of the Gaelic name "Niall" by French clergy in the Middle Ages. In Gaelic, Niall means "champion", but the Vikings morphed it into Njall then brought it to France where the clerics who used Latin translated it as Neel and conflated it with the word neel which derived from Latin nigellus meaning "dark".
It always seemed appropriate from both angles. Dark, or dark-haired, AND champion - for what is a champion but the instrument of one's will.
Pardon for my use of words, 'derive' might not have been the best word of choice. I guess this is what happens when you write your thoughts late at night. it isn't a matter of linguistics but a mere arrangement of letters, which could be called 'worldplay' so there is no source except my own mind for finding out this connection. I have searched the net if anyone else found the same thing or if the words are actually related, but could not find anything. I will demonstrate the small wordplay i made for my friend on Instagram dms on paper, and the rabbit hole i fell trying to make a sense out of it, which didnt come out entirely fruitless. but once again to mention, this wasn't a serious research i made, it was something i brainstormed on for fun and i do not strongly suggest that it is intentional, but what i found was rather interesting, so i thought i would share it.
Ohhhh, yes, I do get it. Getting down and dirty with some anagrams and falling down the rabbit hole of drawing lines connecting one symbol to the next in a network of esoteric correspondences. A fun game, and one I've played on many occasions myself.
There is definitely a LOT that could be said about the core themes and underlying philosophies laid out in Demian as they relate to Like Minds. If you want to tackle the topic of Gnosticism in the film, I'd be very interested to hear what you have to say.
