u ever read a fanfic so good that you want. fanfic of the fanfic
“concept: every word that’s thought about you appears on your skin like a tattoo. there’s your best friend, aromantic and proud of it, the kindest person you’ve ever met. she knows everybody in your grade by name and she has more friends than anyone you know. she won’t ever wear shorts because she’s embarrassed of showing her legs where she’s covered in compliments, proof that she is loved a thousand times over. there’s the boy who loves reading and drawing and other boys. he comes to school with sharpied artwork all over his skin to cover up the words that scream QUEER over and over and over. he holds himself tall and smiles at everyone and when people see him, they think masterpiece before they think gay. there’s the most popular girl in high school, four-time homecoming queen, who harbors a secret love for math. at lunch her friend wrinkles his nose at her calculus homework - “damn, you’re such a nerd.” she laughs it off and every time her heart breaks a little. NICE and PRETTY dot her skin like freckles, but she’d burn all of them off just for one SMART. there’s the boy you sit behind in english class with soft eyes and a tragic smile. one day his sleeves slip back and you see JUST KILL YOURSELF ALREADY snaking across his arm and between the slits on his wrist. so for a week you concentrate on the same thought, and on friday you finally see the product of your labor: YOU ARE LOVED YOU ARE LOVED all across his hand and crowding out the words on his wrist. he touches it every few minutes, gently, like he can’t believe it’s really there, and you smile so hard you almost cry. and there’s you, with a patchwork of compliments intertwined with the insults: your hipbones read FAT and your ankles read I WISH I WERE YOUR FRIEND. some nights you spend hours in front of the mirror, fingers tracing over the constellations patterned across your skin, wondering which words came from whom. sometimes you find an extra I LOVE YOU tucked into the curve of your elbow and you’re ecstatic, but when it fades away days later you feel like you’ve lost something. most of the words come and go, but always, over your heart, there’s this: YOU WILL MAKE IT. and on the bad days when all you want is to fall onto your bed and cry your eyes out and never get back up, you look in the mirror instead and think, you will make it. you will make it, i swear. you will.”

WAIT I'M NOT OVER THIS YET
How SO MUCH of Tsubasa (and xxxHolic) is based around trades. About giving up things in exchange for what you want or what you need. About willingly (or unwillingly) giving up something important in order to get something you want even more.
How this is the first time any character has essentially been given a refund. How the magic was stolen from him - but it also kind of wasn't.
How in Acid Tokyo Fai let his eye get eaten in an attempt to help repair Syaoran's soul. He essentially GAVE his eye and magic to Syaoran on purpose to save him.
And it worked, in a way, eventually! Syaoran had a soul in the end! He was in there! He was making choices! He was alive!
BUT NOW HE'S NOT AND FAI JUST, GETS THE MAGIC BACK. THE PRICE HE PAID IS JUST GIVEN RIGHT BACK TO HIM AS IF NONE OF IT EVER HAPPENED - SYAORAN IS JUST AS DEAD AND GONE AS WHEN HIS SOUL BROKE IN ACID TOKYO, BUT WORSE NOW, BECAUSE NOW THEY ALL KNOW HE CAN'T BE SAVED.
HOW FAI WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY IF HE NEVER HAD THAT MAGIC BACK, IF IT MEANT SYAORAN GOT TO LIVE.
HOW HE LOVED HIS SON AND WANTED HIM TO LIVE AND THAT WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE MAGIC THAT HAD DEFINED HIS WHOLE LIFE. IT WAS A TRADE HE MADE ON PURPOSE.
AND NOW HE JUST... GETS IT BACK.
AND IT'S THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED.
Okay no but seriously what the fuck is going on with Ryunosuke's family situation???
Like basically every major character has shit going on with their family members (kazuma, susato, Iris, van zieks, maria to name a few). Even Gina ACKNOWLEDGES her parents or lack thereof, and it plays into her initial distrust of adults and to some degree how her relationship with Iris develops but like. I don't think at any point in the game Ryunosuke even mentions his family?? Like even as a concept he engages with. This man could have just risen from the seafoam of waves crashing on the beach as far as everyone else knows. There was a pile of moss in the woods and then Ryunosuke sat up from it and he's just here now.
The sparse backstory that AA/DGS main characters tend to have is an intentional move on Shu Takumi's part. His philosophy is that the main character in his games shouldn't have too strong of a personality so that it's easier for the player to project onto them. He's also mentioned in another interview that he's not good at thinking up characters' backstories and feels like it stifles fans' fun imagining different possibilities anyway. That fact aside...
Ryuunosuke made reference to his parents precisely once, as far as I know, and it was in an exchange with Asougi. Asougi asks him something like "If your parents told you to study, wouldn't you do it?" And Ryuunosuke replies with something along the lines of "of course, how do you think I got into university?" We don't know what Ryuunosuke’s relationship with his parents is like, but here are two facts that seem worth considering:
-The topic of Ryuunosuke's speech at the speaking contest he beat Asougi in (see Escapade episode 1) was about how it's important to treasure one's mother and father. We aren't told the specifics of the limitations for possible speech topics because it isn't relevant to the story, but the participants clearly had some degree of freedom in selecting what to talk about. Ryuunosuke used his freedom of choice to argue that people should treat their parents with more care. What a precious boy 🥺
(semi related side gripe: Having translated both games myself when they first came out, I can say that overall I'm fairly happy with how they were localized, but for some reason the translation for Escapade episode 1 was awful! What happened?? Asougi’s speech was supposed to be a call to action for the working class to rise up against their wealthy oppressors! What's this filial piety bullshit? That was Ryuunosuke’s speech! Ugh... There were lots of other things that bothered me about that episode, but never mind that now.)
-I did some research on university attendance rates in the Meiji Era. It seems that only between 1-2.2% of the age appropriate population received a higher education. Even when it came to lower-level education, such as elementary school, 25% of boys didn't attend, and 50% of girls didn't attend.
So what does this have to do with Ryuunosuke’s family situation? Well, in order to be one of those select few who was able to attend university, you not only needed to have had pretty consistent school attendance up to that point (meaning that your family didn't need you to spend the majority of your day working in the fields/helping with the family business in order for you all to survive) and great test scores, but you also needed a solid lineage, and a family that was wealthy enough to afford the tuition. Basically, Ryuunosuke’s family must have been doing well enough for themselves that they were not just getting by; they must have been of good socialvstanding and had a fair amount of money to throw around.
There were also two (so far) Japan-only DLC episodes, and in one of them, Ryuunosuke has a sterling silver pocket watch that he says was a gift to him from his uncle. Ryuunosuke wasn’t told that it was a very expensive watch, so his uncle clearly didn't make a big deal of pointing out that it was real silver. This is just conjecture on my part, but I feel like if it had been a big deal for his uncle to give him that watch, he would have made sure that Ryuunosuke knew its value so that he’d treat it with care. Incidentally, we're not given any more details about this uncle, so we don't know which of Ryuunosuke’s parents' brother he is or anything, but the word uncle is written with the characters 叔父さん, indicating that the man is your parent's younger brother, as opposed to 伯父さん, which indicates your parent's older brother.
...Sorry, I didn’t mean for this to get so long and rambly @_@;; I just really love talking about Ryuunosuke ok
Me: “Man, can’t wait to see what my favorite Unhinged Lad, Shinn Asuka, is up to in the new movie.”
Trailer Shinn: *In a sword-fight with some smiling European pretty-boy. They’re not in Mobile Suits or anything, just looks like Shinn really wanted to kick this guy’s ass and there happened to be swords nearby*
Me: “Sasuga Shinn…”

Hi my name Naberius Tern and I have short hair done up in pompadour and I'm from the Third House (that's how I got my name). I have blue and brown eyes like river stones and I'm the cavalier primary to two necromancers, Coronabeth and Ianthe Tridentarius (AN: if u don't know who they are get da hell out of here!). I'm not related to Mattias Nonius but I wish I was because he's a major fucking hottie. I'm a cavalier (in case you couldn't tell) and I wear mostly purple. I love Abercrombie and Finch and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a purple dueling jacket with matching knickers and also had my rapier and offhand, a trident knife dagger. I had just arrived at Canaan House. A lot of dykes stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.
I made something so goofy, but absolutely necessary

OH MY GOD.
“I was 14, I didn’t know what I was doing.”
whaT THE FUCK
This story has no goddamn brakes
(transcript because I couldn’t find one in the notes)
Stephen Colbert: A lot of writers say they were nerdy kids, unpopular, like outcasts, or that sort of thing; was that your experience growing up?
BJ Novak: I think that’s exaggerated, I think a lot of people love to say, ‘oh I was such a nerd’ or ‘I was such a rebel, I sat in the back of the bus’. Most people sat in the middle of the bus. That’s how buses work. So, you know, people say-
Colbert: So you were sitting in the middle?
Novak: Yeah, that’s where I sat! I mean, I did my homework and y'know, dreamed of being a bit of a rebel. I did a very nerdy version of rebellion, which I guess is sort of my way of balancing where I sat on the bus. When I was 14, I got it in my head that I wanted a fake ID. and I committed what- the only term for it is ‘identity theft’, to get this fake ID. So this is the kind of nerd- I’ve never told this story before, this is pretty much the nerdiest way you can be like, ‘a bad kid’. I went to the Newton library where I grew up, and I went through their polling records… buckle in.
Colbert: I think you’ve already - just that sentence has violated a federal law, but go ahead.
Novak: Yeah, there’s a handful of these, and I actually tried to google the statute of limitations on this before the show and couldn’t get the WiFi.
Colbert: Okay.
Novak: So I looked up -this is true- I looked up someone that was 21 years old, through their polling records.
Colbert: And you’re 14.
Novak: I was 14 years old, I looked up someone who was 21 who had my same first name and initial, because I thought, “if I get drunk” -I had never been drunk. I was like, “if I forget my name, I can’t get busted”. So I found someone who was “Benjamin J. [something]”. So I found this guy’s name and I thought, “if I can just forge all his documents, I can go to the DMV and say I lost my license and they’ll give me a new license with his picture”, this is my plan. So first I need to know where he’s born so I can get his birth certificate, so I call his house. I ask for him, I don’t know what i would have done, I get his brother and I say “I work with Ben, we’re doing a crossword puzzle based on his life for his birthday. Can you tell me what town he was born in?’. So he told me and I took the subway there and I got his birth certificate.
Colbert: How- You went to the- You went to like the county clerk and said-
Novak: They didn’t ask for ID, they just gave me his birth certificate. Then I opened up a mailbox in his name and wrote- I was 14, I didn’t know what i was doing- I wrote to the IRS.
Colbert: Uh-huh…
Novak: And I filled out tax forms in his name. And then I went to the DMV and said “I lost my wallet and I need to-this is all i have”. And i looked 14 years old, but I had these documents, so they sent me to the backroom with this woman who sized me up and said “I can’t give you this, you don’t even have a picture”, and then said with a wry smile on her face, “Open your wallet right now.” and like a true method actor, the only thing I had in my wallet was a library card I had signed in his name. And she approved it, and for the rest of high school I had this actual driver’s license, with my picture on it. [audience cheering] Novak: I’m glad we have some support. You have a look on your face- I don’t know if that was funny or if you just broke the law…
Colbert: It was fantastic, I just hope you have a good lawyer.
