If Your Scene Feels Lifeless, Someone Is Being Too Polite

Stories stall when everyone behaves. Real tension appears when someone:

• asks the wrong question • says something they shouldn’t • notices something uncomfortable • refuses to drop the topic • misunderstands something important • interrupts at the worst moment

Conflict doesn’t always look like shouting.

Couple more options for tension:

They want something REALLY REALLY REALLY bad, but for some reason they can't ask for it -- or can't have it even if they did ask.

They don't notice something that the audience HAS noticed (like in a horror movie when the monster is sneaking up behind the protagonist, or if someone drinks a glass of unboiled water during a cholera outbreak because they don't know about germ theory)

Takes a risk (or otherwise does something they "shouldn't" do) which the audience has to sit through for a prolongued period of time (e.g. slips away from the party to go into the host's private office and rifle through their papers before the guards catch them)

Loses when they thought they were going to win

one of my fav tropes ever is the secret marriage trope because oh my gosh. it’s so good. esp with jake + bradley and the daggers, like it’s soooo good.

imagine they’re all sitting late one night at the hard deck, a good few drinks deep and one of them (fanboy, probably) pipes up and asks “what’s your dream wedding.”

The way bradley would just STARE at jake, and you just know jake would answer explaining their wedding as his “dream wedding.”

“This is just a ruse to get me naked, isn’t it?” Bradley retorts, but as soon as Jake strips him of his shirt and pushes him under the warm spray, he groans with relief. “Fuck, that feels good.”

“Could have this every day if you move in,” Jake says, crowding against Bradley’s back and hooking his chin over Bradley’s shoulder. He says it like it’s something Bradley isn’t already accustomed to—the shared showers part of their daily routine—but perhaps he’s forgotten in the intervening days.

“Hell of an incentive,” Bradley hums, head tipped back, exposing his throat to Jake’s lips. Then, as if it’s not going to make Jake’s lifeless heart sing, he murmurs, “I missed you, you know.”

“‘Course you did,” Jake mumbles, mouth pressed into Bradshaw’s slick, wet skin. He doesn’t know how to reciprocate the words, but he hopes the passage of his lips and hands can do the talking instead.

Bradley snorts. “Humble as always.”

“I know how to treat you right.”

Bradley reaches for the shampoo, passing it over his shoulder. “Go on, then. Prove it.”

I know everyone says it’s best to just stick to “said” as a dialogue tag bc it disappears and that’s true and I mostly do but I want to take a moment for my all-time favorite dialogue tag, “lied.” Absolutely nothing hits like “‘I’m here to help,’ he lied.” NOTHING.
